From Leo: The VOX works for me. I have the bigger model that is 5 watts. Since I know what that amp sounds like, I take it with me when I buy a guitar. That way I can get a better idea of the voicing of the guitar, verses a new guitar and an unfamiliar amp.
I love small amps. I brought a white Steinberger Spirit guitar ( which is quite mini) and a white mini cube to Israel to add some music for our group. That little thing worked great. I don’t think you can compare a $200.00 Vox mini to a $60.00 Blackstar Fly. Even the Boss is $115.00. Also, the sizes of these 3 are quite different. For me, the coolest and best value is the Blackstar, and it definitely qualifies as mini.
In all videos I’ve seen on these now, the Vox sounds really crappy on high gain. The Katana, and Blackstar sound great on high gain. Clean they’re all fine. I have the Blackstar for compact travel and I’ll probably end up with both a Cube and a Katana for when there’s more space. Why is the cube not on this list anyways? I’d prefer the looks and function (mic in) of the Vox, but the Cube consistently sounds better in videos. Many of them have room mics too so really not sure what’s up.
I’ve only ever had the vox one but always wanted to try out the katana! Been saving up for a bigger nicer amp But for portability the boss looks nice cuz it’s even smaller than the vox but sounds nicer than black star :P
Just yesterday received the Katana Mini. Damn i was surprised by how loud it is. I turned up the volume pot to the maximum and just softly laid my hand on the strings, and next thing i thought: "Nope, not trying that out". It needs to be loud to sound really good though. I think i can get used to that, but my neighbours... Gods give them strength, but i need that good tone) Also was surprised by how good the speaker sounded. It's only 4 inches but the sound isn't thin, tiny, not like some old radio, which is how most of small amps with small speakers sound. It doesn't push the air like 12" but the tone is full and warm. Suppose, it's not just about the size, but about the quality and voicing. Tried playing through headphones, turn the volume past ~7 and it drives them nuts! Pull it back to ~6 and it's okay. To 5 and it's suddenly very quiet. Aside from that, it sounds way better compared to software plugins i used. I'd always get muffled sound or lots of bad noise when strumming with high gain, but it's a lot better with this amp. I think i'll keep it!
Hey, you can try the Laney mini ST? i have one, but i dont know how is the sound compared to this three other. If is worth in the future buy one of these. Im a home guitar player and not need big amp.
I took 2hour for think which one i wanna to buy 😢 And now i dont know which better for me... Sir can u sggest which one suit for me 🥰 ??? Cause im bginner and i just like play like heavy metal and hard rock...
I’ve got the vox. It’s a great amp but I almost don’t consider it a mini amp. Or maybe the other ones should be called “micro amps”. I also ordered a blackstar fly 3. Should be arriving today. A sully ordered the set with the extra speaker and powers supply on Amazon ($99) for about the same as just the amp and the power supply. The vox DOES come with the power supply for $149 at guitar Center in the USA. The vox is almost too loud for what I want....in an apartment and I really want to something very quiet. Sure there’s the headphones option. Anyway...like I said the vox is a great amp with lots of great sounds and effects. I’ll also add that the Katana is the cheapest feeling of the those three I tried one out at GC. Sure it sounds good but it really feels plasticky and junky compared to the blackstar and certainly to the vox.
@@sacardevos I honestly haven’t played the Blackstar all that much. So I guess the vox has won out. Sure it’s a cool amp. And it’s definitely much smaller and therefore truly a mini amp. I mean you could pack it in your luggage without really feeling like your compromising space. Not really with the vox. I mean if size isn’t a consideration I’d definitley say that the vox is more versatile sound wise. .
Agreed man. Went to my Guitar Center to pick up the Cube.. Left with the Mini3g2 in black. I have found that I like to leave the back opened up("battery compartment") , it really fills the room with some reverb dialed up .
Seems like the NUX is not easy to find in Europe either. Maybe it´s a unicorn amp. The Blackstar Fly 3 (which I own) is by far far better than the Katana Mini which I tired in the shop and I did not buy. Plus the Fly 3 comes in a bundle and for the same price of the Katana Mini you get a 2nd speaker and the power supply. Or in the newest version you have Bluetooth as well. I also own a mini Laney ST (Iron? ) which is also good and comes for 69 Euro (cheaper than the Katana). Additional feature of the Laney is the dedicated iPhone connection. It let´s you interface your iPhone and use the sounds of Apps like Tonebridge, GarageBand, Amplitube, Jamup Pro.
The TRRS cable that comes with the amp to connect the iPhone is not great, but you can get another one for few dollars. The app Tonebridge alone it´s a fantastic practicing tool and it´s free. There are 2 versions the mini Laney 3w and the mini Laney ST 6w. Both of them comes in 3 shapes to resemble famous Laney amps: Lion, SuperG and Iron. I have the ST SuperG. I also have the Orange Micro Crush, the iRig mini Amp and the Hotone Mojo Diamond mini 5w head. The Orange Crush is for me the worst of the lot. You can't raise the volume and gain without getting a boxi sound and the speaker is very cheap and vibrates too much. the iRig nano Amp is basically an iRig with a small speaker. good for an Hotel room to practice, but you can get a much a better sound by connecting a normal iRig to a portable speaker. The Hotone is a nice little 5w head. The Mojo Diamond should resemble a Fender clean amp. There are now 10 or 15 variations of this little head who are meant to emulate famous amp from Marshall to Soldano to Mesa. I like my Mojo Diamond as it is a great pedal platform. I tried in the shop with a tube screamer in front of it and I was able to drive a 4x12. If I had the money I would buy the entire series.
Jesus when are you going to actually PLAY THEM???!! ... OK... I'm waiting, still waiting...3:21.... ahhh finally at 3:35. OK, I"m listening now. And it's over. And you didn't play any clean chords. Ugh.
that's why there are timestamps in the description. have a look. Jesus was in the video? 😜 I’ve got tons of videos of these mini amps where I play cleans as well.go have a look!
I watched so many videos about mini amp, and one thing I learned was expensive guitar can make them all sound good! if you use cheap guitar and cheap cable! They all sound bad! Most of RUclipsrs they all used expensive guitars lol
I hate to hate but at 2:30 wtf are u talking about? "This is my guitar, this one is wood, with some plastic and metal pieces on it, metal strings" ..... u mean like virtually every other electric guitar in existence? Lmao itd be one thing if u talked about what type of wood and metal is on there because it defines the tone but just saying "wood and metal" is literally a waste of time lol. Sorry to troll it's just kinda laughable
Even though it has no meaning the Donald Trump Tone I thought was very funny. Unfortunately for him there is no room for him in the guitar and gear world. We wouldn't want him to ruin that too.
This is worth watching for the description of the guitar alone.
ya it plugs in a does some sounds... 😁

good idea to take along an amp you know. 👍🎸
Have you tried the Mini 5 with any drive/fuzz pedals? I like the feature set, but I know the Katana input section does a good job of handling pedals.

ya it's supposed to be aimed at street playing. hey kitty! 😊😁🎸🎶
The video would have been much more accurate sounding if the mic wasn't shoved into the speaker
hey there, that's a common technique with a dynamic mic. I'd say the most accurate method would be with a ribbon mic.
