- What if GoodFellas had been a comedy? My Blue Heaven answers that.

My Blue Heaven is a 1990 American crime black comedy film directed by Herbert Ross, written by Nora Ephron, and starring Steve Martin, Rick Moranis, and Joan Cusack. This is the third film in which Martin and Moranis starred together. It has been noted for its relationship to Goodfellas, which was released one month later. Both films are based on the life of Henry Hill, although the character is renamed "Vincent 'Vinnie' Antonelli" in My Blue Heaven. - Развлечения
This channel could be called “Movies that you loved as a kid that are criminally underrated”
I was going to say I watched this nearly a hundred times as a kid and forgot about it.
The series is the wrong name, absolutely. more like "movies that were never that great that i kinda remember watching as a kid and are kinda cute"
@@CSM100MK2 I believe that domain name is taken.
@@HatsOffEntertainment Yep. And you know who has it? Me! I scooped it up back in 1994. The waiting game is over. Time to reap my rewards. I will sell it to you for one video about Sheen Brothers classic "Men At Work" but I'd be willing to settle for a video about "Summer School" or anything else with Fabiana Udenio in it.
Yeah that really roles off the tongue
"Let me ask you--have you ever been wrong?"
"Yes. Once."
"The shoes, right? The shoes are tragic!"
It was the socks lmao
I just saw this a few nights ago.
My dad loved it, so it's my way of having him around still.
I love that. I introduced this to my oldest recently and was kind of thinking the same. It's on a very short list of movies I've watched more than most other films because they make me happy and I never get tired of them. Hope my kids do the same as you one day.
This movie taught me how to properly take care on my dress suit properly.
Absolutely!
Same. Also, they did the same thing on an ep of Seinfeld iirc. Wonder if they got it from this movie.
I always think of this scene. I'll change in to other pants because of this.
As I read this the scene came up lol
I still quote this movie on a regular basis. Often to the confusion of those around me.
What's arugula?
"It's a veg-e-ta-ble".
I never heard of ARUGULA. I only know the term rucola or rocket.
SAME! "What a day for a mow" "Wow a hundred" "Guys, I'm in the middle of an anecdote" "What do you think?" I still watch it regularly it never gets old.
I love arugula and looked it up after seeing this. And I quote this regularly.
This was my introduction to Steve Martin. I really liked this movie.
I wish I hadn't just heard of this gem at 27:[
This came to PPV shortly after my family got a scrambler. I can't count how many times I watched it as a kid
Me too!!!
@@freddyvidz that & the 1st 'Puppet Master' were always on a loop. Black boxes were the best!
omg i completely forgot bout that tech, i had a friend that had one the only thing we couldnt get was wwf ppv. wow its been like 20 or so years since i heard of a scrambler
You should consider covering 1984's "Johnny Dangerously". Another criminally underrated mob comedy starring Michael Keaton of all people. It's a great almost cult classic!
"Once." ☝🏻
These Fargin Iceholes!
Also one of the very first movies ever to receive a PG-13 rating!
Not to mention, it has one of my favorite Weird Al songs in the opening.
And Joe Piscopo...
"With Danny Devito or Arnold Schwarzenegger in mind for Vinny"
Well, they are twins and all.
I can see why Martin asked them what the fuck they were on and took the Vinnie role himself xD
I can NOT see Devito OR Scwarzenegger playing a street-wise chatterbox ITALIAN mobster xD
@@2Scribble Well Devito did in Wise Guys
Because DeVito is Irish, am I right
This era of Steve Martin was the biggest case of leading man identity crisis. You should totally do a video on Leap of Faith.
I know Leap of Faith. It was an atypical role for him, but he showed much depth and sincerity in one of his few dramatic roles. I also like "Leap of Faith" . He shows the humanity in an otherwise crooked human being.
Loved that movie
And throw in 'L.A. Story' while we're at it.
@@postmodernrecycler OMFG that scene on the freeway, dude.
At least he took a risk....Steve is a true artist: acts, plays banjo with the best of em, sings, and dances at a level to rival Fred Astaire. See “Pennies From Heaven”. He choreographed those dances
Watching your retrospective, I remembered a quote from the movie that I hadn't thought of in years "It's dangerous for you to be here in the frozen food section." '"Why's that?" "Because you could melt all this stuff!" Thanks for bringing it back!
Wow. As soon as I read that, I could see that scene in my head. She looked so hot in that movie, Carol Kane. I can still remember that.
@@danfred7127 Carol Kane is great! And what a great underrated performance from Steve Martin. They both sell that scene so well. I had nearly forgotten about this movie until Joe did this retrospective. He’s made me want to watch it again.
@@EverydayTape Me too, I hadn't thought about this movie in years. When I was a kid it was on HBO constantly, I think I watched it every time I saw it was on. Maybe I'll watch it tonight.
@@danfred7127 right on!
How's the turtle Mrs Stubbs still kills me
"In case I wanna read it more than once" That line hit me so hard
This is one of my favorite movies of all time! It hit HBO when I was a kid and I would watch it over and over.
I'm so glad you did a tribute to My Blue Heaven! I was hoping for this! This film is such a treasure from my childhood! I also find it funny how they portray San Diego, a place I know well and hold near and dear to my heart. I have my own fond memories of going to Padres games at the old Jack Murphy Stadium. My best friend in high school spent his early childhood in San Luis Obispo, another filming location, and was asked to be an extra in this movie! I guess my personal connections to this film run deep XD A true gem!
Yup, I’m from SLO myself and remember this being filmed there when I was a kid. So funny to see those scenes spliced with the SD scenes. As though these towns are close by but in reality about 350 miles apart.
A seriously underrated flick. I can see how it's not everyone's cup of tea, but it's a solid comedy. One of my classic favorites.
This is my second favorite Steve Martin movie. Right behind Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid.
I'd pick The Man With Two Brains
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.
The jerk then this for me.
"They made me leave my dog behind."
"They wouldn't let you take your dog?"
"He only answered to his name."
"What was his name?"
"'Fongool.'"
Seriously, that might be my favorite movie line of all time.
If you look closely at his lips you can see him say "Fuck you."
@@johngore5127
That's the whole joke isn't it?!
@@johngore5127 "Fongool" is the Italian-American equivalent. And personally, I think it's funnier this way.
@@JohnDoe-wq5eu Only if you know Italian, which I don't.
@@DannyBeans
Wow, that was way more clever than I was expecting it to be.
I grew up watching this with my grandparents when I would visit, and just recently re-watched it since they've passed on. Still great!
This movie was filmed in the town I grew up in. I was 10 years old when they shot the movie and I remember going over to see them film one night in the local grocery store. I remember seeing Steve Martin in that crazy haircut through the window in the supermarket. Thinking it was such a strange look for him. I love watching this movie now as it is a perfectly shot time capsule of my home town when I was a kid. Wish there were more scenes available.
Edit: I also remember seeing this in the local downtown theater when it premiered. The front of this very theater shows up in the movie when they take the limo to the baseball game. The entire theater erupted into cheers when that scene appeared. Great memory.
"Hey, look who's here, Barney Coppersmith ! What a coincidence !"
"Coincidence? What are you talking about, Vinnie ? You invited me."
"It's an expression !
Siskel and Ebert are full of Scungilli!! This movie is an absolute classic lead by two terrific actors. This movie never gets old to me and has so many memorable lines. Remember, "What the frig is this? It's a popover. There's nothing in it." They don't make them like that nowadays.
I've always loathed Ebert, he was a pompous asshat. Guy shit on sooooo many very enjoyable movies that it's maddening.
I agree this is a good movie among Martin and Moranis best. It gets much better though with repeat viewings. Had S&E revisited it right after Goodfellas I think they would have appreciated it more. It took me a couple viewings to genuinely like it.
I just finished this movie based on this recommendation
Great movie! Not perfect, but pretty good.
I also watched Splitting Heirs with Rick and Eric Idle. Rough around the edges but also pretty good.
Anything Eric idle touches is gold
Exactly. Not flawless but funny and endearing with good performances by Martin, Moranis and Cusak.
The existence of the TV show "Wiseguy" was on the air when Goodfellas was in production and released, also contributed to the name change.
‘In case I want to read it more than once.” One of my all time favorite lines of dialogue ever.
“It’s a veg-e-ta-ble.” Another great line
"It's dangerous for you to be in the frozen food section.
You could melt all this stuff."
No "almost" about it. This IS a classic!
"It's a veg-e-table" lol
Agreed.
Love that scene!
"What a day for a mow!"
I knew I was the only that would remember that line.
Rick Moranis' FBI character always has a serious seatbelt problem.
This movie has one of my favorite character exposition moments of all time; When Agent Barney Coopersmith (Moranis) sits alone in the office doing paperwork at night, when the TV station signs off and the National Anthem begins to play. This prompts Coopersmith to stand and place his hand over his heart. This 30 second scene says so much about his character.
Yeah, Rick Moranis is a true blue American Patriot. *NOT*
@@loginregional Not sure how to take this comment. I was speaking to what this action represented in terms of the character he's portraying. I know Rick Moranis is famously from France.
@@TheGhostofGonzo5586 It's just so odd. Rick grew up some twenty miles from me and the thought of him standing to attention with his hand over his heart to the 'Murican anthem... it's hilarious. Just another player in the Canadian Conspiracy. Oh, and about the France comment, that was the Coneheads. They were *not* aliens from Remulak.
@@loginregional I seen the Coneheads. They were the ones who had rainbow suspenders, did the hand gesture, and said "Nanu, Nanu."
@@TheGhostofGonzo5586 No, that was the Vulcanians in Star Wars
LOVE this movie. I own multiple copies in case I want to watch it more than once...
I remember telling my parents the lightbulb joke without knowing why it was funny or what I was saying. Needless to say I got a good talking to.
As someone who loves to watch obscure movies from the 70s, 80s, and 90s, this series of videos is right up my alley. One movie that I think should definitely be covered is 1996's "My Fellow Americans" starring Jack Lemmon and James Garner.
Great choice...Nobody ever talks about My Fellow Americans....Great on the run type comedy
I love My Fellow Americans! Love when it hits hbo
Arugula... It’s a veggie-table.
I LOVE this movie! Thank you for this video.
Bill Irwin stole the whole movie with his dancing scene.
"..I thought you never [knew about guns].."
Vinnie (tossing away pistol): "I lied.."
I collect VHS and I randomly found this movie for like 10 cents at a thrift store. I'll buy anything with these actors in it. I LOVED it and still watch this movie about once a year. This should absolutely be a cult classic.
Joe, you are like my long, lost, couch potato brother who subscribed to HBO replays and mid 90s Comedy Central Saturday’s . Love the channel man. Keep it up.
"What's the difference between a lightbulb and a pregnant woman?"
"You can unscrew the lightbulb."
I love this movie so much! So many great lines. Very underrated.
When I was a kid I remember when this was in pay per view. It used to give the first 15 minutes free and then scramble. To this day I have never seen past 15 minutes))
I love how you edited Vinny to tell Siskel "fuck you". That was inspired! I too loved this movie as a child.
Siskel and Ebert had the most useless film reviews for people not interested in the history of cinema. Everyone who watched it was waiting for the down-low on whether a film was worth watching, and it never delivered.
My Blue Heaven is such an underrated gem.
This movie is such an underrated classic. I love this movie
It was the mid-90s, I was eleven years old, and my dad gave me a blank VHS tape to record whatever I wanted off the TV.
All excited, I started leafing through the TV Guide, looking for stuff to record. I see a listing for a comedy called "My Blue Heaven". Never heard of it. The synopsis sounded cool, and I knew who Rick Moranis and Steve Martin were.
So I gave it a chance, recorded it, and have been a fan ever since, even though I didn't fully understand it back then.
I need to upgrade to the DVD soon, as this is a criminally underrated flick.
Thanks for the trip down memory lane, Joe! -Jex
The cast in this is amazing, it’s also strange to see Martin and Moranis paired again in a film. It works so well.
They worked together also in Parenthood, a really solid dramatic comedy movie. Its both hilarious and really sad but they gave great performances
"You see a problem, I see potential."
Thanks for posting this video! I haven't seen this in so long! Great movie!
I freakin LOVE this movie!! I was excited to see u did this video!!
I own my blue heaven on DVD and VHS. It was one of my favorite movies as a kid.
Thank you so much...I love this movie, quote it all the time.
Man, I love this film. I saw it opening night in the theater. Insanely quotable.
Not "Almost" a cult classic. This IS a cult classic for the real ones 👌
Yes! I totally forgot about this movie. Thanks for reminding me of this almost cult classic.
I LOVE his Christmas story at the end...
'5 o'clock Christmas morning, I run downstairs and look under the tree and what do I find? Uncle Alfresco, dead on the floor, shot through the back of the head. Plus no bicycle. It was a disappointing Christmas on many levels.'
As former little league baseball player, I was so jealous of that amazing field he had built for the kids. Definitely one of my personal favorite lazy Sunday movies.
That field exists in San Luis Obispo. The team is called the Blues stadium.
This was one of my favorite movies growing up. However many years later I still find myself quoting parts of it. Was really hoping i'd see it here eventually!
I love this movie, i used to have it on Laserdisc❗
I instantly grabbed this when I saw it at the Thrift Store. You have turned me on to so many films that I ended up adoring. Thank you
Love this movie. My dad actually introduced me to it about 15 or so years ago after he found the DVD in a bargain bin. Lots of quotable moments.
Does the movie ever reveal the Rick Moranis character's pancake system? if it doesn't, that's gonna keep me up at night
yes
post credit scene
My brother in law has the same pancake system.
Thanks for a brilliant review. Cheers!
How could you not mention The Merengue or how stellar Joan's arc is, or the brilliant scene of Vinnie meeting his second wife... the video needs to be longer, is all I'm saying. Love this film.
I like to leave a lot out for those who haven’t seen the movie!
Or literally everything Bill Irwin does as Kirby.
My favorite movie of all time! Thank you for checking it out and actually having positive things to say! I was super excited when I saw this in my subscription feed!
This is why I love your channel man. That's the exact kind of movie I know I would've watched constantly as a kid and I know I will love today.
I love this channel man; as soon as an episode pops up I make time to smoke a bowl and enjoy !
I used to watch this movie with my dad, good times. I remember him explaining the Lightbulb Joke to me. I love this movie.
Love this movie!!!
One of my favorite movies. Thanks for including so many of the funny scenes.
One of my all time favorites!
Thank you for a great video. One of my favorites since the first time I watched it, watched it about 10 times and now I'm going to go watch it again. And, I've always believed that this was the second half of the Goodfellows story.
If it doesn’t have Jeffrey Jones, it’s not an Almost Cult Classic.
Too bad he turned out to be a [REDACTED DUE TO RUclips BULLSHIT]* .
*Thanks, Susan.
" Arugula... it's a veg-uh-tuh-bul." 🤣🤣🤣

Joan Cusack, is soooo very Highly Underrated.
I saw this in theaters when it came out and loved it. I appreciate it way more now that I understand the majority of the jokes.
This movie gets watched at least once a year at my house.
One of my favorite Steve Martin movies.
“What a day for a _mow,_ huh?”

I love My Blue Heaven. Such a fun setup
I had that VCR growing up and just recently bought it again.
I don't think you've ever made a bad video on this channel ever man! Bravo!
All of your videos are insightful, entertaining and unique!
I'm so glad to see that someone covers forgotten about films that I remember enjoying when I was younger.
All of these are pure gems just like this channel! Again, bravo!

I love this movie, and this video is a perfect example of why I like this channel.
I'm just saying with content like this you are becoming my favorite channel on this entire platform
I learned the best pancake syrup method from watching Bosch: put a layer of syrup on the plate before you put on the pancakes....
There he is again, my favourite channel.
Great, underrated comedy. Would have loved to see more Martin/Moranis collaborations - their chemistry and timing here was just about perfect. I had no idea about the Henry Hill connection to the story though, so thanks for the retrospective here. Keep up the great work!
Super funny movie . Thanks for remembering this!
This movie deserved a tv show series with these 2
This is one of my favorite movies
Yep. This is definitely becoming one of my favorite channels. I actually wanted to make a video about this myself because I find it so fascinating.
This movie is on tubi tv so I definitely have to check it out now
Sweet, good lord, tubi has so many things I need to watch.
I grew up watching this movie on VHS and now I’ve seen it at least 500 times, personally, I think it’s a masterpiece, will always make a smile or laugh come, as he said in the video it’s one of the best mob comedy’s ever, it’s just downright goofy and if anything like this remotely came out today, people would be loving it compared to the slop getting put out to theaters now adays
I used to watch this as a kid with my grandmother who loved steve martin. I showed it to my girlfriend 2 days ago and now you make a video about it. Awesome. Life is funny like that.
Meringue!
...delightful dance scene!
I haven't seen this movie in a long time. I loved it when I first saw it, and your ACC review makes me wanna find it again. Thanks.
Have seen bits and pieces of this movie, and I love it-especially when Martin is at the grocery store and he says "F🤬 You" at the old lady🤣.
My mom took me to see this on my tenth birthday. God bless her.
One of my favorites.
