To be fair, he seems to be really trying in this video. The "keller" is coming out only about 1/3 of the time. Horizontal fence board makes a lot more sense even for wood, because one can use the highest grade pressure treated lumber or higher grade toughened powder coated aluminum for the bottom slats but use lighter duty material and surface finish for the remaining slats for cost control. Even if the bottom ones are of the same low tier material and go bust, materials above the bottom slats don't need to be replaced (unlike vertical systems)

    • @eh_bailey
      @eh_bailey 2 года назад +7

      I did a horizontal cedar fence with PT on the ground before the slats start.

    • @verohandymike
      @verohandymike 2 года назад +4

      I never thought of that. Also occurs to me I could mix and match the styles. So first foot or so from ground up can be horizontal (PT but still replaceable), then go with vertical above. The bottoms of those verticals should not rot because they'll be that far above ground.

    Matt, thanks for everything you've taught me the last 7+ years. I really appreciate it! That being said, this channel has turned into one big pay to play advertisement, and that is not what OG Matt Risinger intended. People change, goals change I understand that but this channel just honestly doesn't offer anywhere near the value it used to and once all these other people got included in the build show network it really headed downhill fast IMO. I know people will probably disagree with that last sentence, but that's just my opinion. I wish you the best with everything Matt, but I'm headed elsewhere to continue my education as a tradesman because I need something different than what this channel currently offers.

      What exactly are you looking for? There are production costs associated with these channels and yes some do pay to play. That being said, the comments section is a great way to debate the merits of these products. @Issac Beckel - I agree with you 100%. While Matt still does a small amount of common sense content (things like waterproofing mistakes to be mindful of) that don't really add cost to a project, it seems like any product focused videos are always top of the market and totally out of reach for probably 95% of the population.
      It sort of reminds me of Top Gear. That show started out focusing on average cars and became a show about Ferraris and other super cars. But then, who would want to watch Jeremy Clarkson drive a Corolla...
      Anyway, Matt should just go all in and do a recap on his own house build. If he's honest, he'd say, "If you built this house using all of the materials and products I did. Your cost would be $465 per square foot; however, due to my hosting this channel, my cost was $150..."
      That would be honest and transparent.
      Why do I say that? Clarkson always told us what the Ferrari he just burned the tires off of cost.

    These are colourbonds I'm Australia. Used mainly in South Australia but uptake in other states at the moment. The systems are expensive but do work well. Only issue is strength...if they going to ever get side impact they will not last as long. So think twice about high traffic areas. They do fade but uniformly fade do that's ok. The original systems were a bit flimsy but getting better. You also have option to bolt posts to concrete floor using upside down T sections but again not as strong. That way when the tree eventually fails you will have the pre weathered pieces needed to fill in the gap without any additional cost other than labor. With the added benefit that you will have matching finishes. Just thinking a neighbor could drive you crazy if they didn’t like the finish of mismatched sections. I'm glad you talk about surveys! I do land surveying and I see WAY to many times we come by after someone puts up a fence, doing work for their neighbor because they put the fence over onto the neighbors.
    Easily 80% of the time there are pi s missing, or the lines don't line up to your rear neighbors and stuff gets done wrong.

      2 inches from the centre of the property line?
      So technically after your property line is staked out can you put the fence directly on the property line?

    • @enekuda05
      @enekuda05 Год назад +1

      @gotpilks no, if you are putting up a fence, you want the outward face of the fence to be 2-4" inside the line. Technically it can be right on the line, but that means the posts are inside by 2-4". We want the posts in closer to 6-8" depending on the fence.

    Awesome fence. I owned a fence company for 10 years. Our fence code is so stringent, however, that even if we installed those open channels to the neighbor side and capped them, we could be made to take it apart and put those on the owner's side. Code says that all hardware or "ugly" side must be to the owner's side and the non-hardware, or perfect, or beautiful side MUST be to the neighbor. On this style fence, not really a big deal at all. On other styles, lost lots of potential sales because customers couldn't understand why they had to have the hardware side. Eventually, out vinyl fence company came out with an entire line of fence called . . . "Neighbor Friendly." Same on both sides. No issues.

Why, people, why? Anyway, I like the clean look of what you’ve done there, and imagine a future in which all my fencing looks the same. I’ve considered asking the neighbors if they’d like to go in together with something longer lasting but…priorities and all that. Looking forward to your landscaping vids as that’s my true passion.

    The lawyers advise to NOT put a fence on your property line. They say that you have no right to be putting concrete in the ground on another property as you would be doing if the holes are exactly on the property line. Sacrifice 4"-5" and never have to worry about being taken to court for encroachment.

    • @percyfaith11

      @billberry4314 2 года назад +2

      @@percyfaith11 You're correct but...
      In most states adverse possession begins after 7 years and you can prevent that from happening with a legal notice of what and why you did what you did.
      Adverse possession only happens when you take no action for 7 years to prevent it.
      We've all seen a property line with 2 distinctly different fences, one on each side of the line and belonging to their respective owners..
      There might not be a 'perfect solution' to this but I think it is better than being told by a court to move your fence because you poured concrete on property that you don't own.

    A couple years ago I replaced my backyard fence with Simtek Ecostone composite fencing, which was a 200 foot parameter. What I love about this fence is just how durable it is and how it always stays clean. My backyard neighbor's dogs kept ripping apart the old wood fence, and I didn't want to deal with it anymore. This fence can take a hit with a sledge hammer and not leave a mark.
    It also doesn't seem to ever get dirty. It looks exactly the same as the day I put it up and I haven't washed it once. You can also easily spray off graffiti with a pressure washer.
    It cost me right around $10,000 for materials alone, since I put it up myself, but it's worth every penny for the peace of mind and 0 maintenance. The Simtek Ecostone fencing is difficult to source now day and would cost roughly $20,000 for the same project today, so I'm glad I pulled the trigger when I did.

    In our last house we had cedar fence all the way around the back yard and it was a pain to maintain. I replaced 15 panels one year only to have a wind storm come through and blow down 10 of them including snapping off the posts..... arrrgg. When we moved to the current location, no one has a fence around the whole block, so the center of the "rectangle" is a giant open park area. Lots of giant oak trees and grass. Kids never went to the park a block away they all just congregated in the back yards.

    Majority of fence failures I see here around Houston area are due to post rot. Same with mailboxes. I wish fence builders offered sq. steel posts as an option. Fences would last probably twice as long and we'd cut down less trees. Aluminum could be an option, however in my experience near the ocean, even the powder coating breaks down and peels after 4-5 years. As observed on aluminum patio furniture.
    I built my mailbox out of sq. steel tubing cemented in the ground. It's not going anywhere.

In some cases a utility company can remove a fence to get access and are not responsible for damages.( most still provide reimbursement) I work for a utility company and it forever boggles my mind why people fence in utilities and provide no access.

    Aluminum is actually better left uncoated over its life unless it will be maintained, no matter the coating it will oxidize eventually.
    Your biggest concern should be galvanic corrosion, particularly on the fasteners that are used. Dissimilar metals+salt air over time=rust never sleeps.
    3-5 years life on a coating is terrible. There is Kynar, coraflon and many more options for 20+ years. Even aliphatic acrylic polyurethane will do better than 3-5 in the outdoors. It comes down really to what kind of abuse is the coating facing over time. Example, if the sprinkler is spraying it every other morning expect that section to look extra shitty in a couple years.
