- In this video I demo how to quickly check if you have fuel issue and how to check the fuel pump and fuel shut solenoid.
If your mower engine does not turn over at all check this in this order:
Battery conditon
Battery connections tight
Main fuse
Check is starter is getting power:
Yes- Replace / rebuild starter (bench test to verify)
No- Check ignition switch and relay
If you mower turns over but not starting? check this:
Battery Condtion
Battery Connections
Check fuel level & quality
Check fuel delivery:
Fuel pump working?
Yes- Check fuel shut off solenoid
Shut off solenoid working?
Yes- Check Carburetor
No- Replace solenoid
Fuel pump NOT working: Check vaccum hose is not damaged if vaccum hose is good check fuel lines and clear any line restrictions or cloggs before replacing pump.
If your getting fuel properly and engine is still turing over but not starting, check ignition system:
*Spark plug condtion
*Ignition coil (use coil tester)
* Ignition Switch / starter switch
*Check all safety switch connections
* Pto swtich (may be sending false signal that blades are engaged.
* Relays
*Flywheel key way could be sheared causing timing to be incorrect.

What an excellent tutorial. Well done - thank you!
Thanks for the ideas. My zero turn wasn't getting any fuel through the lines. I blew in the lines and opened the choke on the carb a few times. It fired right up!
Thank you for this video! Saved me a headache and money!
Great video , thank you .
Answered all my questions perfectly.
Great to hear!
my z355r john deere was shutting down after 20 mins. i had changed fuel filter, air filter, no help. I blew out lines i could, no help. I took off solenoid and checked it was working so i cycled it a few times out it back on and problem fixed. thansk
Thanks so much!! Test light routine helped. No definite fuel delivery. No "click" to solenoid. Blew air back through the line before the filter, then tapped hammer on solenoid, and ALL is good now! Feeling the solenoid "click" is a good hack. Not sure which problem I had, but my E130 JD is now running fine. Thanks so much!
Good deal Douglas! Sounds like the fuel shut off solenoid was stuck. Its a common issue especially if it has not run for a while. They get gummed up over time and will not let gas get through the carb. Many times just removing the valve, freeing it up and cleaning the valve with a wire brush and WD-40 will do the trick. Thanks for watching. Dont forget to subscribe.
Thanks. GURU . FOR THE INFO .I HAVE ALL YOUR VIDS . ILEANT A LOT . I AM SEMI BLIND
Thanks for the video !
That you for your response. I will try some carburetor cleaner first.
You just saved my day! Awesome job
Thanks very good video- well done!
Think you just saved me a lot of money. Mower kept stalling time running kept getting shorter. Just went out gas filter full ran for about 5 min it stalls and gas filter is half empty. Has to be a clogged line.
Make sure the tank ventilation line isnt clogger also.
@Mechanical_Mind took the fuel line off hardly any fuel coming out. Blew a little air in it started pouring out. Just cut for a little over an hour after that. I'm going to change them all next chance I get. Thanks buddy.
First off I really appreciate your videos. You have some great indepth content on Deere mowers. Would there be any chance that a failing fuel shut off solenoid would cause a near stall of the engine? I have a 2014 Z920m and it will bog down and nearly stall when I reach top speeds. This occurs regardless of the blades being engaged or disengaged. I have a new fuel filter, fresh non ethanol blend fuel, new spark plugs, and the battery is holding a charge. Engine seems to start and idle fine.
Thanks Kevin and for watching the videos. When the fuel shut solenoid fails it will not let get through the carb. It sounds like you might have either a vacuum leak around the carb, intake gaskets. Or a fuel tank ventilation issue.
In this video I show how to find vaccum leaks ruclips.net/video/NGAQDAx6oVA/видео.html.
If its a tank ventilation issue run the engine unitl is starts to stall then remove the fuel cap and see if it clears up. Your mower has a ventilation hose running next to the fuel line. When they get clogged it doesnt let air to enter the fuel tank and the fuel pump is then fighting the vacuum in the fuel tank and cannot provide enough fuel needed for the engine at higher rpms.
@Mechanical_Mind I have been wondering about a vaccum issue. Have you ever dealt with the Z920m that has a Carb Cannister? According to Deere parts website I have the California model fuel system with the big charcoal cannister. I wonder if that may be part of my issues.
I have the same mower and it just cut off when mowing today and I checked for fuel and I’m getting fuel to the carb so I’m guessing the solenoid is my problem.
OK I will do that
Excellent video. I have a Z930 that shuts off after running for about an hour. It sputters down to a stop. I noticed that even though the solenoid was tight on the carb the body of it turned when I was unplugging the connector to test it. Could that cause the turning off?
The body of the solenoid being able to turn is normal.
It sounds like your tank has a vetnaltiion issue or a partially clogged fuel line. Remove the fuel line and vent line and blow them out with compressed air.
Will do. Thank you so much for your time to help those of us in need.
Great video! The white wire connector (containing the hot and ground wires) that plugs into the shutoff cylinder on my s100 has melted. I’ve searched allover for a new connector, would you have any insight on where I might be able to find one? Thanks!
If you can wait until Thursday I can get you that part number for just the wiring harness section you need. It will not show up on deere.com
That would be great!! Thank you, Sir!
The part you need is AM133284
THANK YOU!!!!
Ok. I have a JD D130. It will start on choke but if I take to choke off it stops. I have replace the fuel pump with after market fuel Solenoid twice. I actually cut the plunger off the solenoid and it worked for a few weeks but now it will not run except on choke and you can not run the mower deck when it choke mode. They are about 15-20 bucks and the John Deere solenoid are $143.00. Any suggestions?
I think your carburetor is bad (dirty, worn, or maybe broken)
Usually that is the issue when it will only run on choke.
Mine was. Gas line. Old. Gas line. Blocked fuel
From. Tank. Cut to clean. It had. Shredded. Inside
After years of running gas with ethanol in it the fuel lines could be deteriorating from the inside out. I often need to replace all the fuel line hoses on machines over 6 yrs old or more.
Everything is good but still just cranks any clues or recommendations?
Will it run if you spray some carb cleaner or starter fluid into the airfilter or intake?
@@Mechanical_Mind it does not sadly
@David Willison Ok. I'll help you figure it out. Have you checked to make sure you are getting spark?
If you are getting spark next thing to check would be pull the valve cover off to see if a push rod and rocker arm has gotten loose.
Also, when was the last time it was running? What model mower and engine is it? How many hours are on it?
Hi how are you I'm working on a horn deere 115 it's not a la115 new battery, new after market carb, all I know is there's no fuel coming up to the fuel filter from the tank under the back seat also new fuel pump, and fuel filter can you please help me
If you have no fuel coming from the tank to the filter then you might have a clogged or kinked fuel line.
How do you unclog the line?
I am not getting fuel past the fuel pump. New filter and fuel pump. What else is there to check?
Check to make sure your pick up tube in the fuel tank and the fuel hose from the pick up tube to the fuel pump is not clogged.
Also check to make sure the hose that goes from the fuel pump to the engine (either the top of the valve cover or the engines crank case depending on what engine you have) does not have a crack or cut and is attached firmly.
Can't get your test probe far enough into the plug; open a small paper clip and use that to penetrate the plug.
Remember the fuel line. Ethanol eats the lines.
What about testing a two wire solenoid with 2 same colored wires
What model mower do you have. I'll do my best to help
@@Mechanical_Mind I'm working on a predator 9500 generator. It runs for a couple seconds and shuts off. I don’t think it's the fuel shut solenoid but I want to rule it out. There are two orange wires that go to it. It's getting spark but not as clean as I would like to see and it doesn't run with carb cleaner
Hey man. Sorry for the delayed response. One of the wires has to be the hot wire and one has to be ground. So just test both ways with your multi meter.
Check to make sure your getting good continuous flow of gas to the carb through the fuel line. You may just have a clogged or kinked fuel line.
I'm not to familiar with the fuel line set up on those generators but a kinked fuel line was very common thing I'd see on brand new John Deere mowers.
Had the generator been sitting for a long time without running?
@@Mechanical_Mind thanks for getting back. The 2 wires are orange and connect to 2 red wires. There is also continuity between the 2 orange wires. Neither are grounds. My guess is they are both hot wires but supplying 12 volts to either one doesn't make the fuel solenoid move, I removed it and watched. Plenty of fuel to the carb. Generator runs for a couple of seconds then shuts off. Doesn't keep running with carb cleaner. It doesn't seem like a fuel problem but I would like to just rule out the fuel solenoid
My zero turn mower is not getting any gas from tank to fuel lines , filter or pump. We ,(Did put new fuel line and pump on it still o pump
Sounds like the pick up tube in the fuel tank is clogged.
It turns over but no start even after starting fluid in carb. Any idea?
Is this a 1 cylinder engine? Make sure you are getting spark.
If you are getting spark and still no start with carb spray, I'd pull the valve cover off to make sure the rocker has not come loose from one of the valves.
Or it could have a stuck valve.
@@Mechanical_Mind it’s a x 585 2 cylinder Kawasaki. Has spark put new plugs in anyway. Checked hose on sending unit it was good. When it was running, I would stop shut it off get a drink or whatever and then it wouldn’t start. It would have to cool down somewhat then it would start this last time. I thought I ran out of gas, but after the fill up, it still wouldn’t start. It started one time with the starting fluid, but that was it that was just cranks over. Thanks for the reply
@@Mechanical_Mind I’ll try that
Mine works because I used a wire to jump it and the plunger moves but it's not getting power from the wire. I think it's my relay
Have you used a test light or multimeter to see if the harness is getting power at the connector end that goes to the fuel shut off switch.
It should have constant power when the key is turn to the "on" position.
(What happens to me frequently is that the harness connection end will be burned or messed up not letting good contact to the fuel shut off switch even though the harness does have power)
@@Mechanical_Mind my brother is coming to check. I don't have a multi meter. It wasn't the relay.
What if your not getting fuel
No fuel going to carb = Clogged or restricted furk line or bad fuel pump or loose or cracked hose going from crank case to fuel pump.
If you are getting fuel to the carb but not into combustion chamber : stuck or faulty fuel shut off valve on the carb or clogged or faulty carb or restriction in the carb.
@@Mechanical_Mind not seeing any go to the fuel filter tried blowing thru gas tank and barley any gas came thru
You need to show zoom in I can't see what you are doing!
Hi Charles, here is a better video I did more recently going over the fuel systems and up close footage.
