the thing was about the system was that it just a worse nintendo with less games. this would have been okay if it came out in like 1984, but by 1989 the Genesis was already out. You can argue that it was a budget system but a NES was just 20 more expensive with a much wider variety of games in 1989.
Today there is incredible homebrew showing what the 7800 can do. The dragons trilogy, rikki and vikki, donkey kong PK, knight guy castle days, and so many more show what GCCs box couldve been. No doubt it was a failure but circumstances played a large role in its history and perception...
The Atari 7800’s May, 1984 release is being memoryholed. There were thousands of people who walked into retail stores, bought the 7800 and had been playing it for two years prior to Jack Tramiel getting off his ass and allowing the 7800 to start shipping again. Those who make the case that that the 7800 was only being test marketed in 1984 have to say the same about the NES in 1985.
That's an interesting take on the Atari 7800's release history! The early release timeline definitely feels a bit underrepresented in the broader gaming narrative, especially when comparing it to the NES. Thanks for pointing that out! It seems like there were indeed gamers who had the 7800 well before Tramiel's involvement. There's always more to the story when it comes to the history of these consoles. Appreciate your comment!
The problem was Walmart & Kmart by that time didn't stock Atari they stocked Nintendo & Sega. So you had to go to Sears, Toys R US, Kaybee Toys, or Circus World to find Atari Games. My parents wouldn't go there much but every now & then. So the games became harder to find for it.
Same here my mom & dad was gonna buy us a 7800 because it was backwards compatible with our 2600 games. Our older brother talked them into getting the Nintendo. We were lucky to get it. If it hadn't been for our older brother we wouldn't have had the NES. They didn't wanna spend the money to get us one. Always taking the cheapest way out. We were lucky & surprised they gave in & bought us one. Of course most all of the other kids already had one. Just like when we got our first VCR & Microwave most everybody else had done had one. But we were proud of it and we thought we were finally stepping up in class.
commando and ball Blazer had pokey chips on the cartridge that gave it arcade sound. but yes, because of the reverse compatibility most of the games had 2600 sound.
This game wasn't even running solely on the consoles capabilities...😅 that game had special chips to have that music/audio otherwise it would have Atari 2600 audio only which is most games on the platform. Great visuals, such ass audio.
More original games like Ninja Golf, Mission Impossible, and Dark Chambers plus would of made the 7800 so much bigger. The 7800 was capable. Ninja Golf could of had sequels like Ninja Gaiden on the NES. Instead they focused on older Dig-Dug games in a time when people wanted new games
I wish the Atari 7800 did more original games like Ninja Golf or Dark Chambers and made sequels.. It was capable just like the NES but the 7800 library instead focused on older arcade games. Commando was good but the 7800 game library was limited
I totally agree! The Atari 7800 had so much potential, and it would have been great to see more original titles like Ninja Golf or Dark Chambers get sequels. The system was definitely capable of more, just like the NES, but it seemed to focus more on arcade ports. Commando is a solid game, but yeah, the 7800 library could have used more variety and creativity. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
I chose this and didn't even consider nintendo because of course I had about acquired about 30 2600 games and a used 2600 from mowing lawns probably less than 2 years prior. I was like atari's gonna show everybody who can make the best games lol....they certainly showed us...wasn't them. I never saw a nintendo game until 1990 though but I saw Mario and duck hunt and I definitely knew when I saw that Still I loved 7800 joust and galaga for real and I remember thinking f18 hornet was a true 3d game...why couldn't I turn around and the fly back the other direction lol? I got my own used Nintendo with graduation money in 1992 and bought a brand new copy of star wars at Kmart to go with it.
They kept thinking that people wanted an arcade-style controller at home... a classic example of a company that could've had it all but was horribly led
@@brettvogel8418well to be fair we were still mostly playing arcade style games when this machine was created but it was shelved because of the 83 crash
@@brettvogel8418 yep though I was 6 years old in 83 and didn’t know there was a video game crash and was actively playing my 2600 and odyssey 2,consoles and arcade games probably explains how easily my mom was able to purchase me so many games probably got them off the bargain bin lol
Even as a collector i was never really interested in atari. Even looking at this it just looks and sounds directly worse than the nes version. Not to mention that controller absolutely could not support a game like super mario bros., which in 1989 would be almost necessary. When the sega genesis also released that year it simply couldnt compare.
I agree the NES version of Commando is better but I'd give the Atari's version Xevious and Rampage the nod over the NES version. NES Rampage is missing Wolf man😄

Well said! I agree.
Jack Tremiel was a penny pincher.
Yep Atari waited too late to release it.

That’s awesome !!

Worst mistake I ever made was getting the 7800 instead of a NES. NOBODY had it, couldn’t find games and everybody and their grandma had Nintendo.
Yep, NES ruled, but cool to have in my collection now.
Shoulda got BOTH like most kids did....brokey

i grew up too poor to get the 7800. I had the 2600...
Me too!

The sound was exactly the same as the 2600.. that’s one of many reasons it failed
Makes sense.

Not this game

Man we had the 90s right ahead of us
Yep, a lot of great gaming!

I used to collect 2600s (sunnyvales). But I think the 7800 is a more rare collector piece
7800 is a much smaller collection too. Great to collect!
The 7800 was cooler than the NES
I won’t argue it’s a fun system!
If only they hadn't used the same sound chip.
Right!
Commando looks like a clone of ikari warriors from 86
It’s actually the reverse, Ikari copied the original arcade Commando.
I want that game
It’s a good one
I wish I could go back to those days!
Me too!
Thanks!!
Welcome!
In my case, I prefer the European Controller Pad version (it has the same shape as the SEGA Master System).
I'll have to check that controller out.
Cool 😎
Thanks!

We all had or own retro journey. I enjoy the 7800.
A new era? Seems the Nintendo already pushed that era a little before this was released
This isn’t a NES vs 7800 video. It’s an Atari video. Yes a new era for Atari with this console I said it and stand by it.

Ok, I'll make more.
Atari never understood how to create a proper game controller. Lol
2600 controllers were great.

All good points
One of my least favorite systems and I’m die hard Atari. The sound was so incredibly bad it ruined the system for me.
I don’t mind the sound.

Lol 😆

This was the Best atari 7800 cart by far amd only one of two to use pokey chip sound.
Cool!
Stop Your Narration...please
Nope
Nothing wrong with his narration keep it up!
Thanks!
