- With David asleep on a French sun-lounger beneath a copy of Summer Lightning, Alex and Mark pour themselves a cold drink and consider …
… the great ska floor-fillers.
… taking kids to rock concerts.
… the fate of all bands: “as musicianship improves, vocals decline”.
… left-field Beatles songs reworked as nursery rhymes.
… why 2-Tone had pop’s “triple threat” (and the genius of Mike Barson).
… of the five big acts with all original members intact, only one should reform.
… how “Tay-gating” became a thing.
… the secret life of Chris Ballew, former leader of minimal grunge trio the Presidents Of The United States of America.
… is the Jam a “young man’s concept”?
… the downside of “Cuddly Liam”.
… Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran: has normality replaced escapism?
… and Frank Carter as the new Johnny Rotten.

Taylor can have all the money in the world, her music will still be as dull as mud, so much so, she should change her name to Smith.
John Lydon could still cut it as the Pistols front man, he'd just have to get 'match fit' and want to do it.
An element of danger in Oasis? They were marketed here in the US as the next Beatles and after hearing them were strictly rejected.
Midge Ure also said that the solos in Thin Lizzy's songs are pretty much interchangeable, making his task very difficult. Especially when there are two guitarists playing the solos. I think Midge is one of our most underrated musicians/songwriters.
Scott Gorham was very funny on Midge Ure's This Is Your Life edition talking about the differing sartorial choices. He said Ure dressed like Aladdin which was comically out of place at a rock show. Apparently, he got a standing ovation for helping his pal, Lynott at such short notice...
Just a small correction: In The City was released around the time of Paul Weller's 19th birthday, not 17th.
Taylor Smith is the perfect name for a tribute band. Genius! I must say that I'm always rather dubious over bands reforming, esp bands of a certain vintage. It just feels like they've become a tribute act to their pasts, and when they get to the point of playing songs in a slightly lower key because they can no longer hit those notes as they did at 18, 19, 20 then it's game over really. I'm just glad The Beatles never did. They went out at the very top of their game. And there they are preserved forever in fond memories of the era they came from. The only thing about them that I was sorry couldn't happen was to see John with the others round George Harrison's kitchen table talking about The Beatles on the Anthology series. Again, in a way I hope Oasis resist the urge to reform, leave it as it is lads. Like the Fabs before them we have those fantastic albums to listen to....
Dandy’s version was better by a long way.
Taylor Smith! very good!
Just shared this to Stevie Riks... Doooooo
Why was there never a band called the Members Of Congress? A splendid double pun... to my knowledge, never used.
Yet
Midge Ure in Thin Lizzy is like Keith Richards in U2.
Oh that's right.... that happened too
Syd.
Ed Sheerin and his soppy pop, goes plop.
Really enjoyed this Mark and Alex only episode. David needs to have more holidays!
*blush* thanks Kenneth! ~ Alex
Bravo Alex!
The Australian kids band The Wiggles who have been hugely successful internationally were a band called the Cockroaches originally.
What fun! What a great idea. Music for kids. lol - the ska would be fun too! lol - I couldn’t resist giving the kids - and the Nannas Killing in The Name of. It’s really challenging to have permission to use swearing - without being hateful.
the 2-string bass thing the Presidents of USA did was borrowed from their friend Mark Sandman from Morphine, who often played a 2-string bass with a slide.
Baker street. No lyrics in the chorus.
Ooh - great shout! ~ Alex
The other benefit about replacing the singer is the band can play without the fear of the drama and egos exploding on stage.
That said I am quite sure that it doesn't matter how many zeros are on that cheque to Liam - the detent will remain fragile and liable to snap at any moment.
Bands who shouldn't reform, or shouldn't re-form? The two are different.
