Gentoo Linux: Stage3 Base Install

  • CORRECTION: wpa_supplicant IS indeed included in the iso. If you want to install Gentoo via WiFi and WPA or WPA2 refere to this guide: wiki.gentoo.or... - Thanks to @Mohammad Noorain for pointing this out in the comments.
In this video I am going to do a Stage3 base installation of Gentoo Linux. I am going to eventually expand to more videos next year. Gentoo Linux is a Linux distribution built using the Portage package management system. Unlike a binary software distribution (like Arch Linux), the source code is compiled locally according to the user's preferences and is often optimized for the specific type of computer. Precompiled binaries are available for some larger packages or those with no available source code.

    A few points worth mentioning.
To give an idea of how long some commands take just type time in front of them. For instance time genkernel all will give you three times at the end of the execution.
At 21:28 the --make-rslave mount commands are only needed if you intend to use sytemd (in a blue Note in the Handbook)
At 25:48 You got a message "Unable to find kernel sources at /usr/src/linux" This is the result of doing a world update before installing the gentoo-sources. I know the handbook recommends doing a world update but they should also add to emerge the sources before doing that. Now some packages like portage have been compiled without the real sources.
At 33:51 You accepted the license for the 20201022-r3 version of the linux-firmware package which means the next time this package is updated you'll have to accept it once more.
It is better to say no to the question and then you type nano /etc/portage/package.license. In that file you put this line: sys-kernel/linux-firmware linux-fw-redistributable no-source-code, you save the file and reemerge the command. Now each time there is an update for the linux-firmware package you won't have to accept the license again !
Pay attention there is a space between the category/package and the first option and between the first and the second option !
At 36:02 It took a long time because neither did you edit /etc/genkernel.conf before executing genkernel nor did you give the --makeopts=-j5 option to the genkernel command. When you'll rebuild your kernel don't forget to do it like this: genkernel --makeopts=-j5 --menuconfig all It will go faster and you'll be able to tweak your kernel.
At 37:39 you rebuilt a package which was already installed. When you see a R in yellow without any change in the USE flags and without the presence of a small r before R the package hasn't changed so it makes no sense to rebuild it.
At 39:08 you use defaults for swap. You ought to use sw because defaults implies rw, suid, dev, exec, auto, nouser and async and some of these options don't make sense for swap
Don't forget to change the profile to a desktop one when you'll want to add a WM/DE. Don't forget to edit /etc/portage/make.conf and add the appropriate values for the variables VIDEO_CARDS and INPUT_DEVICES before emerging xorg-x11
    Cheers

Thank you Ermanno. Gentoo reminds me of the LFS project that I many years ago followed. A lot of work setting up the system, but with the bonus of high adaptability. I want to ask a question. Why should we use gentoo? and what do you think is good and bad about using gentoo?
I use gentoo too. But people around me say that gentoo is not a good choice.

    • @eflinux
      @eflinux  3 года назад +5

I believe good or not depends on what you like. Gentoo is absolutely fantastic if you want to configure the system in every little possible detail. You can do this in every distro of course, but this is in my opinion the reason you'd choose Gentoo, besides compiling packaging instead of installing binaries. I go to Arch because in my case it hits the middle. It installs precompiled binaries, yes, but I can literally set up a machine with a DE or a WM in 30 min max, where in Gentoo it would take me much longer. Again, this is because it suits my needs better, but it is different for everyone. There is no right or wrong, there is only what is important to you.

A while since this was posted. But I would love to see more. It was very informative, and I will probably use for reference in the future. Actually been using Gentoo, but tried out Arch a little since I found this great channel. I like Arch. I like Gentoo because: packages can be stable, or they can be bleeding edge, or they can be a mix. Not sure if this can be done properly in Arch. Gentoo runs on any architecture. Have it on x86, arm64 and MIPS. It is also possible to patch packages with you own little fixes since they are actually the source (I have not used much, but I like the idea). It is very close to LFS, and therefore a clean and very learning experience to use. If using old hardware there is a little performance gain in compiling specifically for that cpu. Can't think of anything else right now :)

Fyi you actually dont have to use their installation media to install Gentoo. You can do it through a terminal in another distro. The more common way is to use one that has a live media you can use like Ubuntu. This way you can have the handbook open next to the terminal and just copy paste most of the commands. Also with this you can use something like Gparted to make your partitions. Its really just a faster more efficient way to install Gentoo.
