"I don't even have that chipset on my system"... last Voodoo card was released about 20 years ago, and 3DFX was bought by NVIDIA. Really interesting use flag, LOL.
Using Arch right now but I've used Gentoo as well. I do want to return to it someday when I have the time and motivation to set it up. I liked being able to have that control of my system. Gonna watch some more Gentoo videos now.
Recently found your channel. I am an arch/fedora user and I am really curious about trying Gentoo. It seems it requires time and a bit of dedication at the beginning, but the knowledge you gain from it is surely worth it. Nice content man!
I am in the process of installing gentoo. Currently I am compiling the kernel. Gonna take a while, used the noob kernel package. I truly like the simple and straightforward style of this video. It seems like it is just trial and error with what can be disabled. Just remember what you turned off , in case something breaks. Is that about right?
I use several, Windows 10 & Debian at my job. Linux Mint, Gentoo, and Kali Linux for personal use. In Gentoo I use DWM, in Kali I use KDE, and in Mint I use XFCE.
Mental Outlaw pretty cool, I’m thinking of using gentoo, I’m currently an arch user atm and I wanna try it, I will be copying your installation guide and test it in a vm first 👍🏻👍🏻
I'd probably get into that myself if there were interest. That declarative model is super cool. I main antiX for portability, but nixOS provides that in its reproducibility.
Let me preface this by saying I really enjoy your videos and am often in agreement with you. I disagree with the "you might as well use Linux mint" I use arch-based systems (not arch itself, I can't be bothered to set it up) because I fell in love with pacman and with the AUR and because they are rolling release. It's foolish to think you're better than anyone for running Arch (and some people run Arch because they think it's cool), but there are legitimate use cases for it.
@@notelijahking8038 I assume it would create some problems, but it would be nice to know what problems it might cause, and is there any way to mitigate those problems, or will it just become harder way to achieve the same?

Hi, very interesting. Do you know how to fix circular dependency on hardbuzz freetype I tried to use flag them in the make conf but it does not do anything ?
Do you run an Nvidia card? If so can you explain a custom initramfs? Genkernel compiles with "CONFIG_I2C_NVIDIA_GPU" which breaks the nvenc in OBS-studio. How to get nvenc working?
@Unknown Person This has successfully turned off the I2C_NVIDIA_GPU config option in the kernel. However the nvenc option still doesn't work in OBS - says drivers are outdated. Nvidia drivers 450.57-r1installed. How to enable nvenc?
lmfao it'll be ready in a decade or so. so much still has to be ported to it still. I can't even use it because I rely on a software kvm, and the only unsupported platform is wayland.
I prefer binary distros. I want a system that installs quick and I want it as customizable as I want it. I not really into specific customizations like in gentoo or any source base distro. Especially when you are busy with work, a source base distro might not be worth it.
You make Gentoo videos but you actually use Linux Mint, basically playing with Gentoo in VM, that's bizarre, maybe you should try focusing on Mint videos.
I mean, u r just flexing that you use gentoo, no systemd, no pulseaudio and honestly, I dont care! Like your videos, dont get me wrong as a hater, but I just dont care
He's not flexing about anything. It's an educational video LOL. If you think like that maybe you think his OS is better and you should replicate his setup. Also, getting such an efficient setup is very difficult. How is it flexing to show your hard work to your followers who are into that niche? I have one Voodoo 5 that I bought and keep for sentimental reasons. Those were great cards back then.

From my personal experience, disabling dbus globally can be very problematic if you use Gentoo as a desktop OS. Good vid though :)
dbus can also be problematic if it is installed .. it's a choice lol
im tryna get into gentoo and these videos are of so much help! thanks!
Nice to see that somebody else use Gentoo in world of generic OS.
Hey dude, you put -cups twice on your USE Flags variable.
yup
two cups!
He REALLY doesn't want those cups...
2 girls 2 cups

Here shortly I am gonna try and get Gentoo running the PopOS DE
Did it work?

@@MentalOutlaw Kali is a lil' of an oddball for a daily driver since it's made to be insecure in purpose. Any reasons why?

Could you just use -* to remove all USE FLAGS and then add all the USE Flags that you need? Or would that potentially create some problems?

I manually build freetype first with (USE="-harfbizz" emerge --ask freetype) and then continue as normal.

get two used flags

Calculate linux review when?

There is obviously a mistake in your make.conf file "-emacs", it's probably a bit late but there is still time to repent.
