Well, it’s an intermediate/expert level dirt bike with a license plate! There is definitely a learning curve. But no way around the fact that factory fuel mapping sucks. Can’t blame Honda entirely for scraping together a DOT legal emissions bike when the twitchy throttle really isn’t terrible off-road. It’s really meant to be in the dirt. And to be ridden hard in the dirt. Not poking around town. On a 450 fuel injected 4 stroke dirt bike. That’s like daily driving a 7 second drag racing car with no interior and radials. Get a vortex+sumo wheels+comfortable seat, and then you have a better street bike.

That head shake at high speeds can easily be fixed by softening the clickers on the suspension. It has a rear shock setting for a 175 lb man. Set at the stiffest setting. I have a 2021 CRF450RL that I converted to a Super Moto. This is an awesome bike as long as you get the Tokyo Mod Vortex ECU to fix the horrible fueling. • @tcmcclure2323

It does take a decent amount to get it into a comfortable super moto. I converted my 2019 450L to SM over time. Did G2 throttle tamer, vortex ecu, seat concepts XL, warp 9 17s with continental conti sport tires, 45T rear sprocket, larger front rotor, full yoshi rs4 exhaust. Completely changed the bike. It’s a real beast uncorked. I bought mine used for a great deal, but for the cost of all the aftermarket to make it into a super moto compared to buying one new, I would just buy a husky 701.

    • @jasonmount76

@@chasewarner99 my commute is the same. 4 lane highway posted 70mph. For me, it's a blast on the highway, once you swap the seat for a Seat Concepts. I've done many long trips on mine, and like any bike, you're ready for a break at fuel stops. Just keep in mind, euro 5 emissions requirements make this bike miserable from the factory, with the fuel cut out causing the "twitchy" throttle. An $800 Vortex ecu solves it. Between the ecu, full FMF exhaust, seat, and 3 gallon IMS tank, I'm over $2K in upgrades. I really wanted to love this bike when I bought it, but I couldn't, in factory form. As someone who rides honda dirtbikes, yes the Power is supposed to be punchy and a little sketch.. It makes it easier to control in heavy sand. When you hit a trail and let the engine breathe in 3rd is where you will feel it.
Also the seat isn't really ment to be used. Offroad you should only sit on turns or accelerating. So seat comfort at least offroad doesn't matter.
10k is normal price. It's not cheap but it's not expensive. To have it detuned that much is pretty rough for 10k but it's still the same engine that I'm pretty sure you can retune it. Husky would be about 12k for this so it's not a bad deal at all.
I will actually be purchasing this for a bike I can put on a rack and take it everywhere on my truck. Which is exactly what I think it's built for..
But yes this is a race bike. It's like hoping on a cbr 1000rr when you are a green rider. It will feel the best only at full Throttle but when you do, the suspension comes alive. That floppy steering will allow you to hit bad obstacles at speed and it is so good

Honestly didn’t see this first ride coming. Love my 450L though. Such a fun bike. The throttle definitely sucks in first gear and is only a little better in second. Only way to fix it is to buy a new ECU for it. But you do get used to it. I don’t have issues with stalling. The seat is a plank but there’s multiple options on the market. The bike is great as a dirt bike, and for use around town. You eventually get used to the bike and riding it at highway speeds. Granted I don’t go over 70 either with dirt tires.

I have 800 miles on my 2022 450RL, planning on getting the ECU and Yosh pipe to uncork it , definitely snappy throttle but something you can tame when your used to it IMO….biggest downside for me is just the seat 🤣 other than that love it, taken it on trails and it’s an absolute beast. Highway tho , not really the bike for it

Wow! Obviously Chase doesnt get it. Honda finally gives the masses what they want and Chase complains that it isnt an old school Japanese dual sport. I will concede the seat needs to go if you spend more than an hour in the saddle. Im puzzled by his complaint of the clutch pull effort. Many have insisted Honda should have made it hydraulic but Personally, I don’t have any issues with it. Perhaps clutch feel or engagement may be more valid points. Chase seems to think this bike is an adventure bike. To me this bike will never be a highway star but then again that wasnt what this bike was designed for.
I get this was a demo but you really need to take this bike off road. And Im not talking tight single track riding as this bike was not designed for that either. Perhaps the European counterparts may be a bit more “race ready” but I doubt they will be as dependable as this Honda. Plus, Dealer support for a Honda is much more plentiful. I swapped out my ECU for a Vortex which provided multiple benefits. (Thanks EPA for constricting Honda to make this 50 state compliant and putting it in a sad state of tune)
You talked about how this bike feels like the most dirtbike motorcycle you ever rode then compared it to a BMW GS in the way of highway manners.
Sorry Chad, you missed the point with your review.

Nothing in US law requires manufacturers to make all street legal bikes rideable for people not competent to ride them…hyperbikes? I am sure you are a fine street oriented motorcycle rider as I have seen plenty of your videos. But if you ever review another street legal dirt-oriented bike consider a format that lets you, and your vicariously engaged viewers, experience and reflect on the bike as it was meant to be ridden. Side roads, to back highways, to dirt roads, etc.

I would like to see a Parts List with all the prices for this bike , add everything up and look at the total price , this must be worth the price HONDA`s asking .

I wanted a comparison between this and the KTM 690 SMCR even though I was already set on the KTM. Your review on the 690 was very positive and that makes it a no brainer for me. Price difference isn't that much and you get so much with the KTM. ABS, TC, slipper clutch, hydraulic clutch, quick shifter and most importantly, comfier highway ride. It's a little heavier but that's what makes it good on the road. I'm a Honda fan but Japanese manufacturers are just slacking in the dual sport segment. It's either dirt bikes or ADVs. No good dual sports.

IF they tamed this bike by 17HP from the moto version it had to be done for emissions! That's the only reason to wack-off
so much power, which means it can be taken back by un-corking her? IDKnow how but someone does & now I'll be lookin'
for that info. I appreciate the ride.....

You can literally make any dirt bike or Enduro street legal to drive in any state (you might have to use out of state registration if you live in the likes of CA, NY, or NJ because, well, you know), but it didn't take much for Honda to make the "CR450R" street legal....but they did go a little far in detuning the engine and management itself just for the hell of it.
This RL is super underpowered and detuned compared to the R, so much so that it's not great for trail riding and slow maneuverability because it'll just choke itself out and stall. Thankfully, you can get an ECU flash and exhaust and it'll gain back almost all of it's old R character... it's really a necessity.
And the price should really reflect how much you need to do to it to get it to somewhat perform and behave like it actually should.... this RL should be anywhere from 8-9k tops, because you're going to have to drop at least 1500 to fix it 😅
10k for this bike the way it is is outrageous IMO, and I'm a Honda fan, that's the only reason why this bike is even appealing in the first place....but it's not much faster than an XR650L out of the box... and that bike can be had for 6k.... and that bike has the prestige and all the rally and Baja titles to back it up(yeah I know, the XR600R, same frame though, same exact looks though)
Edit: that Renthal pad being backwards is "triggering" me 🤣😵‍💫🤣

It is a dirt bike,,, not really design for highway,,, even it is road legal. When you are living in rural areas with a lot of rough road and muddy holes it is almost perfect.
Also I think it used SOHC which produces more torque and quick acceleration,,, which is perfect for a dirt bikes.

you learn to stand up and feather the clutch (for twitchiness contrl) on dirt bikes. THe "RX" version of this bike (non street legal) is great for enduro type stuff! I rode that one. Also, reason why RL is detuned is because emissions (don't let noonday tell you BS about reliability... The race bike is plenty reliable as are most Hondas I've seen). I'd like to see what you think of the KTM 500 EXC-F / Husqy FE501s DS bikes. THough I'd think you'd enjoy the Husqy FS 450 / KTM SM450 supermotos.... as for daily riding.... Nah, you get this to take it on the road to the single track trails on the weekends (and not for long distances)). I'd get a different bike for supermoto like built one with better brakes. (again, KTM SM450 / Husqy FS450) which would be cheaper than getting honda and spending all you need to do for supermoto mods. the CRFs red paint do look good though (unless you hate red) I do tend to favorr the KTM/Husqvarna bikes for off road, though I used my buddy's CRF450RX and that's a great bike, made me consider getting a Honda, though I am not yet sold on the RL (I'd either get X or RX and make that street legal, or go KTM/Husqy). I had a old KTM 350 EXC-F that I got rid of and want to replace (was looking at the 450-500 range like the KTM 500 EXC-F or Husqvarna FE501s, maybe the CRF450RL or get a Yammy YZ450FX and make it street legals.
Again, you dont' ride these bikes daily. They're either ride to the trails (for shot periods) on a weekend, or if you make Supermoto, its not a daily bike eithe). all you really need for a street legal in most places is turn signals, DOT tires, mirros and heatlight/brake light and license plate. (In California it is a VIN thing where in many sstates you can make a "dirt bike street legal by adding that stuff, but in Cali, has to be built as DS from get go). so, oh, and it has to pass emissions (hense the 17hp nudering)
