I rode my mt09 for 4 years before buying my 450l. Now Year 3 with my 19 & I love it through & through. I pre ordered it not knowing how massive it would be in person as a small 5’7 man, it scared me till I hit the trails. The bike does ALL THE WORK. No regrets.

As for the oil changes, I put an aftermarket skid plate (I wanted a linkage guard anyways) with an access hole for the oil drain and use a Works Connection EZ oil drain. Its like 1.2 quarts of oil and 10 minutes and not even 1 drop of oil spilled.

    My CRF450RL story so far:
I come from a dirt bike background so that is my bias with a dual-purpose bike.
Bought my 2021 CRF450RL used with 614 miles on it, and I believe the original owner rode it street-only because it was blemish-free and shiny like new.
I'd already known of all the popular mods for the bike since I'd been following the bike since it's 2019 debut, so my initial mods once getting it home were:
    *Folding mirror.
    *Bona-fide knobby tires.
*One-tooth-larger rear sprocket with a new DID 520 ERVT chain.
*Suspension springs suited for my weight.
*OEM Honda throttle cables from a 2021 CRF450R.
The reason for the different throttle cables is these are much shorter in length, use a more direct routing to the throttle body, and therefor can be adjusted to the bare minimum throttle grip free play without the free play going to less than zero as the stock cables and cable routing will do when turning the bars full lock.
Much more precise throttle control without excess throttle grip free play.
I rode the bike with these mods for about a month both commuting to work and riding trails and dirt roads. I loved the stability at speed over rough ground, the firm yet compliant suspension, and the strong power and torque.
I feel the gearing, even with one tooth added to the rear sprocket, is still a little tall to be ideal on trails, but it's close enough for now and I may go with an additional tooth this spring (today is Christmas Day, 2023 - Merry Christmas!).
I certainly did notice the ON/OFF snatchy throttle response and lean stalling/flameouts that most reviews complain about, yet it did not seem like a big enough deal to want to order a Vortex ECU.
    Not at first, anyway.
However, hearing and reading all the glowing Vortex ECU reviews and the thought of having a better-behaved bike and getting rid of the baking heat radiated from the cat in the stock muffler persuaded me to order a Vortex ECU and FMF Megabomb header and Q4 muffler.
I also simply wanted to see for myself if all the great reviews on these mods were justified.
So glad I did because the bike now runs as you would hope it to off the showroom floor:
Normal throttle response, no snatchy ON/OFF, and no more stalls and flameouts that seem to come out of nowhere. Just a great-running and well-behaved CRF450RL.
All-in-all, I am very impressed with this bike and the way it performs, and I am glad I bought it.
    P.S.:
I'm kicking the idea around of the Stealthy 7 ounce flywheel weight.
I don't have a desire for one while I'm actually riding the bike, but I hear glowing reviews about it on a CRF450RL.
I'm wondering if I were to install one, would it be a similar situation as with the Vortex ECU where once I try it, I'll love it and think I should have done it sooner.
Anybody have experience with this flywheel weight on theirs that has any input?

Big adventure bikes are for fire roads and mold off road use. A dual sport most of a dirt bike is built for off road more than eating highway miles. You have to pick the right tool for the job.
I’m looking for something like the KTM 300 xc-w 2 stroke and throw a kit to make it street legal to legally hit connectors and not have it bog down and die on slower technical single track.

Good video. I agree with you. I own the 2021 CRF450RL and I put all the mods on it. I think it stinks that you spend 11K on a new bike and it needs another 3k to get it up to speed. I drove the bike for 2 seasons and I have a blast on it. I think it's fun on the street but not great. I think it is fun off road but not great. I come from riding motocross on a 2003 CRF450R. I have decided to sell my RL and I just purchased a new 2022 CRF450RX which I have only ridden once but I LOVE IT. It is better suited to my type of riding. I thought I would use the RL to ride from my house to the trails but the trails are 30 minutes from my house and I worried that I would have a mechanical issue and be stuck getting the bike home. Since then I purchased an enclosed trailer so I have a way to transport my bikes. My wife got a 2020 CRF250F so we have a blast trail riding. Ride ON!

I've been off the dirt a few years, went to fix my '03 CR250R and its basically in need of a new motor. I've got a couple Harleys, one I tour the country on regularly (2017 SGS) and one (a 2012 Wide Glide) that I don't ride too much since I bought the SGS. I'm thinking of trading or selling the Wide Glide and then picking one of these up. I've also considered the 300L and maybe an XR650, but I liked the pep of my CR250 and think I would eventually want the power of the 450 over those two smaller bikes. I'll mostly be riding dirt and trails.

I should decide then if I'm going to order the Vortex, but even still looks like a 12 week backorder on them. If I get the Vortex, I'll get either a Yoshimura or FMF exhaust. Kind of leaning FMF, since I hear it is quieter. Then again the Harley I traded for it, had aftermarket exhaust that was a bit louder than stock too. ;)

I will say that the factory issues with flame out and the idle fuel cut off thing have got me a little hesitant. Coming from street bikes, this bike was a learning experience. It definitely needed an ecu and throttle tamer. I’m still intimidated by it. What keeps me from trading it in is the ability to ride off road. I don’t think I want to give that up. There’s range anxiety with this bike. Just got mine.. Downsized from the Africa Twin. Agree with your findings.. Great bike! Very versatile.. Lots of sand here. The 450L has remained vertical so far. The AT would have been down 2 or 3 times by now. Lifting that hog in sand is very difficult for my fat ol’ 58 yr body. That’s with emphasis on the word “very”. This 450L doesn’t feel like much more than a mountain bike, or much more than an ol cr500. Power is impressive w/ a yosh & vortex. Liking mine in trail mode. Not much stalling, but that issue remains, yet not as bad as was stock. That’s it’s only issue imo. Not a big prob, just make sure you give some gas when feeding clutch..

As someone who rides a crf250l and a Tiger 800xcx myself I've been looking heavily at this bike but the elephant in the room for me is that maintenance wise and price wise it's almost no different from the KTM/husky and those bikes have it beat on paper for as i'm sure youre aware. I'm a honda guy over KTM any day but this bike in particular doesn't seem to have the usual advantages that hondas have over the orange bike at least in the specs. How did you make your decision?

I wanted the 690/701 too but there are none available out here and this one had no dealer markup so I said WTH. Even if you change the oil every 600 miles its a small job and I think it takes a little over a quart so its not too expensive

    • @jf7393
      @jf7393 2 года назад

@@BornAGoon that's kinda what i felt. even though they quote pretty strict interval for a honda i don't think honda knows how to built a motor that can't run long on scheduled maintenance. maybe not recommended but hondas just have a track record of being able to take abuse. i don't want to spoil any future vids but are you thinking you might sell the tiger?

Where do you find the horse power to these CFR's? I bought my first CFR 450L in 2018. I added a new pipe which lightened it up a bit. then I bought the CFR450X turned it into a street legal machine. It's way faster on the low end but on the top end my L blew the X away. I got 37 miles a gallon on the X, then I added a new pipe. more power but it dropped my mileage to 27 miles a gallon. I was thinking about buying an R and making it street legal. there are so many CFR's it's confusing. the thing is on the X you lose the ignition and the ability to lock your forks, to get that great power on the low you lose the high end and some great features the L or RL has. my thing is riding wheelies. I do love my X but the problem I found about buying these bikes you always lose something to gain somewhere else. the CFR's are all kickass bikes. whatever I get I have to make it street legal because I don't have a pickup or a trailer to haul it. after all my research I just might keep my X. I would be totally pleased with it if it had a fork locking ignition. have fun and ride on !

Coming from a dirtbike background, I found myself at the limits of the suspension and weight of the drz. Though the engine performance was adequate. Wondering about ditching the DRZ for the 450L. i ride with a guy who has the drz400. i own a crf450L. we swap back and forth at times. they're very different bikes - you're not "upgrading" by going from one to the other, just "sidegrading". it's a different ride, it has different strengths, it's up to what you want out of your bike. try to find one to test ride before taking that plunge, and make sure your test ride includes off road. that's where the differences will REALLY show up.
