    爷爷在后面慢慢地走着。
    爷爷在后面走得很慢。
    I think there is a subtle difference between the above two statements,
    but I'm not sure what it might be.
    I think that Chinese tends to put the emphasis on the last element.
    So, maybe in the first version, "walking" is stressed.
    And in the second version, "slowly" is stressed.

      That's an interesting point. Thanks for sharing. Yes, in the first sentence, 走着 is the main action, and 慢慢地 is a modifier that describes how he is walking, so 走着 has more weight. In the second sentence, the point is to express how he is walking, so like you said, "慢“ takes more emphasis.
