So … "He drank water, not beer" should not be translated as: xx 他把水喝掉了,而不是啤酒 xx (assuming we're talking about water in general). Also, some say that the 把-construction *must* be used in certain cases, since a verb cannot be followed by an object and the object's "disposition". So … 请你把沙发搬到客厅 cannot be stated as: xx 请你搬沙发到客厅 xx We could also say that the adverbial 到客厅 must directly follow the verb 搬 and cannot follow the object 沙发.
