Rules are a lot like magic spells - not using them doesn't mean much if you don't know them in the first place. But if you know them and choose not to use them then you might be onto something (or you've made your life harder with no benefit at all, but isn't that an integral part of art?).
i've heard people say that in the art (drawing) community, in writing contexts (both storycrafting and grammar). in basically anything creative really.
303 and 909 have become as natural to techno as guitar and drums for rock&roll. Even if you don't build your entire track on them, there is just something to adding a familiar element that works extremely well. I don't think anyone imagines being unique for using these. That's not the point.
2:00 it's very comforting to know that it's normal to feel like your stuff gets less "creative" as you learn more. I'm always so shy to do anything I think sounds "too obvious."
Makes educational techno video - ends up being the seminal techno song played on dance floors throughout the world.... like Jack is House.... *THEN makes another VIDEO to explain it* bloody well done!!! - Yoris Beltsin (AUS)
The dancing rule is important. I started making electronic music way before visiting raves, and that was actually holding me back. Dancefloor experience is a must!
ive always been a techno fan but i never truly listened to techno until my girlfriend took me to a rave now im a full on techno babe and yeah, completely different ball game
I'm sure you can already tell, this is by far the best teacher on youtube. If you're just getting started you want to watch his your first hour in ableton video. If you already know some stuff I recommend watching that because right away you're sounding professional.
I'm a novice music producer but I have practiced and taught woodworking for a number of years. What you are saying about knowing and implementing "rules" is absolutely true. If you start experimenting before understanding the basics, you'll never master your craft. You may accidentally create something that looks or sounds good, but that is generally just a stroke of beginner's luck. Knowing some theory will give you the chance to analyze what just happened, and learn from it. Thanks for great content!
Dude, you're the King 👑 you not only created this masterpiece (the original video), but also found energy and time to explain it even more deeply! Wow 😮 Thank you!
I mainly mix acid techno and omg your video is * Chefs kiss * ....just being able to sample "Rule 6 is acid" in a loop and drop in another acid song is beautiful - and this video is definitely appreciated as im getting into producing my own songs for my mixes.
Hey Oscar, I just wanted to say that your videos are so good that I DONT EVEN MAKE TECHNO and I watch your content because it's thoughtful, well put together, and still applies to my more common genre (bass music in my case-- maybe someday I'll have the courage to lean into making techno). So keep up the amazing work! So much of what you say is universal and applies to any genre. Thanks for what you do!
I started producing dubstep but today I finished my first techno-ish type trancey tune. All thanks to your tutorials, very happy to say I've expanded my musical lexicon. Appreciate the knowledge 🙏
As a lifelong student of music, this is a wonderful video. I’m deeply familiar with all of these concepts, but this context is so cool! Your way of explaining is really digestible. Bravo
And also, I LOVE that you are subtly but noticeably dancing through THIS entire video! It underlines the most important end of the last video about our existence.
Same "dismay" of rules as in photography (I'm not surprised). You can see how far somebody is into a certain field on how they react to the term "rules". You explained it very well, and this "explanation" video clears the one or other point (and points to some of your videos) that might've not been obvious for some people.
Thank you for making this very interesting video. I particularly liked your summary of why one would follow any rules when creating art. The alternative title you came up with just nails it!
I fucking love your videos! You’re the perfect blend of educational, entertaining and inspirational. You really truly know what you’re talking about, and you come across as down to earth and really passionate about sharing what you know. ❤
like seriously this was the best tutorial I got in my trip on learning to create music. Very nice personality combined with a perfectly share and understandable tutorial. I love it!
Thank you so much for getting on camera and explaining these processes and concepts - I have learned so much, and with every new video pushing my music forward I find inspiration for creating better artistic representations of the noises in my head 🙌 Great respect and thanks for all the help!
you can`t imagine how much have you inspired me as a producer Oscar. ReallyI want to say you thank you with all my heart. Keep going and keep inspiring people. Greetings from Colombia
A little bit philosophical! Bro you went deep! So hot! Wow! I have never heard a producer express the construction and meaning of a techno track and how it sometimes can be much more than the track it is or it can be just fun!
Thank you for everything, you're a genius through and through and my main inspiration going forward to get better in both production and knowledge, I loved the previous video so much and knew you'd release an explanation. I've been rewatching this daily.
Great video bro! I like how you explain everything so anyone can understand. I have studied music for some years now and know a lot of these concepts, your approach is refreshing and admirable, greetings from Guatemala.
I'm stuck at rule six. After the "use acid" step, I got into this confused state of mind where I'm unable to seriously make music. My DAW started talking to me and convinced me that this was not the right time to make music. Instructions unclear.
Your previous video was perfect, demonstrating the rules in the style off the music, showing heart, dance, feeling and meaning. Still, I understand why you might feel you had to do a subsequent video.
I love the original ten rules and your explanation is fun, too. I find it not only entertaining but informative and inspirational- I now use a Digitakt, TD3 and Analog Four (sometimes some Volcas) and work dawlessly- and your video made me realise I don't use polymeters very much (if at all)- but I want to add some when making techno- luckily it's very easy to change bar length on the Digitakt. The nice thing about your Ten Rules is that it applies to making music dawlessly as well as using a DAW.
Love the video and the EP Oscar. Thanks for sharing all your knowledge. I don’t know why, but I want to start a tradition of sharing my favorite tracks here each week. My plan is to suggest one Techno and one House track every week. My Techno recommendation for this week is "[KRTM] - Popface" from the album “It Will Make The World A Better Place”. Make sure you listen to this album from start to finish, it is mad. For House it will be “Simon Doty & Artche - Who Do You Love?”. I hope some of you find a new gem for their collection and feel free to share some tracks too. Let’s grow our playlists together.
The original video popped up in my feet yesterday, i have no idea why (I don't create music, i just love to listen.) And a few moments into the original song I understood what you were doing and I thought it was absolutely brilliant and this just expands even more on it. I'm totally vibing with it, you are a great teacher.
I didn't even realize that ten rules of techno video was yours! It's truely inspiring to see something new! That video itself can be a techno song TBH...
Can't speak for Jiujitsu, but Judo (and probably all Japanese martial arts have this same idea) considers all before black belt as "learning". Every time new techniques. From black belt onwards, there are no new techniques, but perfecting the techniques you already know.
Thanks for sharing your philosophies in music. wish you could make a video regarding any philosophy u have with music or audience. that topic tickle something in my brain.
I challenged my arts teacher in school once with that 'break the rules dilemma'. We were making a book and the topic was canons of page construction. So I asked here why I need to learn all this when I want to break all these rules in my book anyways. She had a simple response: 'If you would like to break the rules, you need to know what rules there are to break'. I started learning the canons of page construction silently.
Good one 👌 Similarly this extends to, for example, writing and citation style guides such as the Chicago Manual of Style, learning “form” so you know when/if you can or want to break it. Knowing the fundamentals can and almost always results in greater forms of creativity and satisfaction of your pursuit and from experience it makes you want to seek out the inner workings of things and the “why…?” behind it.
i loved the music video, was very inspiring, because mire than technical is rather artistic and showcases the talent of the teacher, proves he kniws what is talking about
The 909 can be covered by wavealchemy's Revolution. That's uses NI Kontakt and covers a number of classic drum machines. It is typically on sale 2 to 3 times per year. Of course, if you want the Roland Cloud synthesizers, you might still want to subscribe or buy perpetual licenses. At least buying them is possible. For a while it was not but Roland did listen to people which is nice. For my SH 101 needs, I use Tal Bassline 101, sounds very good and has a fair price.
Personally I think you need to “know the rules” to “break the rules” and luckily Oscar from Underdog is a great teacher to lay down the basics so folks know how to create something truly theirs where they can expand the horizons of the possible! Can’t wait to try out the second Fundamentals course! ❤
You know… I’ve never really put any real thought into my music I kinda just feel it. This video will make my music more intentional than my natural knack for musical composition and rhythm
The video ... is made well and points to individual videos. In the end these individual videos you refer to are the key, but... all in all: Well done 👍! A "rule" comes into account if my/you/... music is meant to be accepted by other persons. If one makes mosic for the him/herself, everyone makes what suites his/her likes. When making music even for a group of people, the music should be found good by the majority of the group, or the result may be a group of people running away or yell "BOOO" at it ... If - in general - I want to produce whatsoever, I have to accept, that I have to satisfy my customer's "taste" (even when selling amps, bikes,... food.. In case of music this means to know my "target group". If this target group loves "Industrial Techno", Melodic Techno might disappoint them... most of them will have an expectation to get an "industrial" sound, not really melodic (at least nothing with chords)... simply that, what they have heard in their past and present labeled as "Industrial Techno style". So applying "rules" makes sure, that the sound is at least similar to the general style and thus ... mostly accepted.... My interpretation 😉
First i was like “genius”! I’ll do it! Then I was like “now i have to make a song without a pulse, damn. But since starting this comment ive already started filming hahaha 😅 excellent suggestion thank you!!!
I love the content of this video. I do however seriously dislike Roland cloud and I can imagine others do too. Im a audio engineering student. And one of my lecturers always tells us that, "you have to learn the rules, then you can break them".

It's also the best excuse for a lot of artists to create absolute horseshit.
Same in medicine. We gotta learn the normal physiology to understand the pathology of disease.
@@Darkquark-u5that's a good and an illustratory analogy 👍
And the mob of 303-plus-909-using people rose and yelled in four-to-the-floor-unison "THERE ARE NO RULES HERE, WE ARE ALL UNIQUE!"
303 and 909 have become as natural to techno as guitar and drums for rock&roll.
Even if you don't build your entire track on them, there is just something to adding a familiar element that works extremely well.
I don't think anyone imagines being unique for using these. That's not the point.
Yeah, so you are telling me than everybody using a piano are the same? Like Beethoven and Miles Davies and Debussy are not original? LOL.
then those same people will seethe and screech when they hear the word "genre"

This is an interesting point. Have you ever checked out Victor Wooten’s talks on teaching music?
Dude, you're the King 👑 you not only created this masterpiece (the original video), but also found energy and time to explain it even more deeply! Wow 😮 Thank you!
Excellent track I think we’ll be hearing it for many years
Most powerful video to make techno music

I was the guy linking the teschnozabel-track at your ten rules video. Then I checked your channel. You got a new subscriber today.

Both of these videos were amazing.
Absolutely loved the ten rules video & this explainer is a perfect follow up. Keep it up Oscar!

Ten Rules of Techno was suggested to me, and now I'm loving the content here. Definitely subscribing and tempted to try and make my own track.
Your song is crazy going to play it in the club this Friday 🔥
That video was perfection! But that being said, thanks for coming back and going in depth!
thank you for the followup. that said the first video was awesome and I found it helpful in visualizing the concepts.
Your previous video was perfect, demonstrating the rules in the style off the music, showing heart, dance, feeling and meaning.
Still, I understand why you might feel you had to do a subsequent video.
I've been making techno for about 30 years, and I enjoy your lessons. ..We need to see more Oscar making tracks on various pieces of hardware! 😉❤
I don’t do techno or dance music but I still learn a ton from your channel Oscar
dude your simplicity is well scooby, big good. xx

such a great video 🔥 thank you for clarifying so many things
Lovely in so many ways
what amazing class! Thank you!
would be cool to see a video on dub techno, including the really ambient stuff
Yass, seconded dude 😎
great concept, great artwork, iconic explanation. Thank you...

I loved that video and this one as well.
Thanks for the content Oscar! A nice video suggestion would be a rule breaking video where you take each rule and break it while keeping it techno :)
First i was like “genius”! I’ll do it! Then I was like “now i have to make a song without a pulse, damn. But since starting this comment ive already started filming hahaha 😅 excellent suggestion thank you!!!
@@OscarUnderdog You're welcome! keep up the great content and service you are doing to the electronic music community!
Loved the hihat and kick explanation i feel the dance better that way instead of viceversa.
Just because there are no rules, I've released an album called "Wrong Techno" the last month.
Genial!!! Muchas Gracias!!! Saludos desde Argentina!!!
This is great! Thanks!
You are basically the boss ! Thx Oscar 🫶🏼🫶🏼
1:34 - haha, that's just way too good 😂😂
The ear ring is definitely rule 11 to techno
I love the content of this video. I do however seriously dislike Roland cloud and I can imagine others do too. 00:52 Very good, keep it up!
This makes me wanna continue with my techno project
Well I'm glad this video come up cause someone really need to explain how to make them thirsty.
