    Generally speaking, when quenched with water, the temperature gradient between the surface and the inside becomes large, and the stress caused by thermal contraction makes it easier for cracks to occur. However, of the four blades, only Eric's blade, which was quenched with water, did not crack. Tendencies and phenomena do not necessarily coincide. This episode proved it.

      I think its 1045, is very tough Material and loves to be quenched in water. If you quench it in Oil, it will most times not get hard, and if you overheat it, before quenching in water, it also somtimes fails to get hard. Its not a very hard steel, but you can drop it whithout anealing (Like it shows in the show), and its a good steel for hammers and splitting wedges. I like to use it for the blade of scissors, with a mildsteel back, and i dont aneal it, is a good tough combo and easy to sharpen.

      Was kinda luck. "Gotta go hotter." " Gotta use water? Okay"

      You really can’t count for experience when quenching blade in water, it’s all in the hearing of the blade and how you get it to that critical temperature, if you heat the blade up too fast it will crack……even in oil.

    • @Coecoo
      @Coecoo 26 дней назад +1

      There's far more to it than just the analogue quench in water/oil. Temperature plays a huge factor and how the steel has been worked & treated prior to that, such as hammering one side more than the other, etc. Can also observe that they seemingly messed up the oil quenching by dipping it once then yanking it back out immediately when you're supposed to submerge & gently stir it for like 15-20 seconds.

    The judges always react when a contestant uses water quenching. However, Eric decided to use water quenching after seeing Jared's failure in oil quenching using the same material. Moreover, he carefully placed the blade in the water. When a red-hot blade is placed in a coolant, the coolant evaporates and creates a vapor jacket. The vapor jacket cuts off the contact between the blade and the coolant, slowing down the cooling process. This often prevents the blade from hardening. So when oil quenching, the blade is moved in oil. When water quenching, the vapor jacket can be used to slow down the cooling rate, which is too fast. Eric seems to be not only a good bladesmith, but also a good competitor.

      @MGower4465 26 дней назад +10

      Well, no. He actually says he thought the other guy said "water", when he really said "hotter". So he assumed the other guy was saying their steel needed a water quench. Which is odd to assume, but the guy *was* going toward the barrels of water.

    • @Heuroya
      @Heuroya 26 дней назад +6

      @@MGower4465 The mishearing was not a big deal. Eric would not have made such a mistake if he did not have a proper knowledge of quenching. And what Jared said and how the blade should be treated are two different matter.

      It's one of the reasons I liked the show better with Wil than the later seasons with Grady. Wil always asked the departing competitor to shake his, the judges, and the other competitors hands before leaving the forge.

    • @thomasnieswandt8805
      @thomasnieswandt8805 26 дней назад +2

      Actually not complicated at all. ....
      This show started as a nish project, a small litlle show with a host and three experts. Will, always had this aura of a veteran who is a natural leader. The way he presented the show was unique. So at one point (same with UK Top Gear 2002-2015 or Wheeler Dealers up to season 13) this show became more then a show. The Experts and Will became a cult of their own. This happens when the personalitys became greater then the show itself. When Will decided to quit TV to spend time with his family, they had to find a new host.
      This one had to do his own style and not copy what came before. So the presenting format changed slightly (i mean its still about forging, time and testing) humans dont like change, so they cry for Will to come back. (I liked Will better too, but its okay to me)

I would buy that show and then tell him know this show is going to be you coming over the other side of the table and you making this sword ... and if you all fail you're all off as judges will get new ones ... the most useless show on TV

    Whenever i open a new knife from its packaging, i always make a little tear, so i can rip the package open in one pull, to let the knife fall onto the ground. Normally a wooden floor...i won't do this over concrete...but its a symbolic gesture. If the knife takes no damage, I'll keep it. But if the tip bends or any hardware comes loose, i discard that knife.
