KTM 1190 Adventure & BMW GSA LC Acceleration and Road Test

  • Riding with legend of ET roads, Brian on his new KTM1190 Adventure. Acceleration and top end - no contest really but handling wise, BMW is right there with KTM. GSA was on Michelin Anakee 3 (which I don't like at all), KTM shod with Conti Trail Attack2. By no means was this "scientific" test - just 2 enthusiastic riders comparing notes (bikes). No winners really, it all boils down to personal preference. However, when KTM launches new 1290 Adventure, BMW better have the answer. I wonder how Ducati Multistrada would rate against KTM. Shall I make a plan ? Let me know in comments.

    I'm a happy KTM owner now. But last year in the alps I had no problem keeping up and passing BMWs on my old Honda CBF1000F. BMW is top comfort, luxury and all the BMW is, that is good for a lot of people. However, after riding a KTM you just can't find any other bike as enjoyable, fun and exiting. I don't think i would get the R version thou.

    • @miragegp

      +Javier Gonzalez I like KTM but my issues were finish, that heat coming from rear cylinder that was frying my manly parts and high speed instability. Had similar feeling on BMW XR... GS is super stable at any speed.

    • @miragegp
      @miragegp  8 лет назад

      Lol... I had to get out of town quick today (and on Friday traffic is very bad)... Had a huge grin on my face...just carving up on freeway. To a degree, once you're over certain horsepower, it doesn't matter what you ride, anything is exciting in it's own way. They better get 150HP of new GS, it would go like a stink. KTM just wants to go... I have a video somewhere on my channel, have a look, I really rated that bike.

      I am sticking with my GS, it would be interesting to see what they are going to do - Ducati has just launched new Multistrada that's off road biased.

    • @miragegp
      @miragegp  7 лет назад +1

      Few things I don't like. Front is very noisy, feel is rather vague (on the road) and rear is single compound - so you don't get that mileage nor the grip on the side.

    Nice video, although some sketchy passing of vehicles🧐. As you mentioned it comes down to personal choice as both are great bikes. I've got a 1200GS, I have ridden a friends KTM 1190 R, but I prefer the BMW because as soon as I started off with the KTM I immediately didn't like the sound of the chain drive. Coming from the BMW it sounded as if something was loose. But both are great bikes.

    • @jackolbean4765

      lighter, feels much lighter, handles better / quicker on the road, MUCH better on the dirt, much quicker, nearly $10K less money,... I mean seriously, name a metric. And that's the 1190. It's a much more dynamic bike in every way. Squash!

    Thank You for sharing. I'm looking to add a larger "Do It All" bike for faster, longer two up rides than my current DRZ400-SM Supermoto is good for to my stable. Much better to see, hear and watch a bike being ridden to it's fullest in the real world, by a real owner having some fun, competitive rides and sharing open, honest opinions about their individual choice in machines than reading any one of the many dozen or more magazine or "professional" video comparison tests. And I agree... you need to find a similarly talented and aggressive group of owners to come out and play with you and your crew. Say, one with a Multistrada Pikes Peak, the new KTM1290 SA, and a nicely hot rodded (pipes and tune) VStrom Adv and then a broad mix of fine bikes like the ST1300, a Concourse 14, maybe a F6B, a 2nd Gen Hayabusa, ZX-14R and a FZ-09, run them up some twisty, dusty bits and film it all up for us to enjoy ! Now THAT would be a fun, informative and nicely rounded out group run! Until then, keep having fun and keep sharing the footage with the rest of us!

  • @vriendelijkegroet

    I went from the 1200r to the 1200 GS LC to the s1000xr and recently back to a GSA, the best bikes are GS but that XR engine...

    • @miragegp
      @miragegp  7 лет назад

      I feel the same. Had XR for couple of days, there should be a video or two in this channel. I liked it a lot but overall I like GS better. How do you compare GS to GSA (I did the opposite switch) ?

    • @vriendelijkegroet
      @vriendelijkegroet 7 лет назад

      miragegp I sold the XR cause it was too much " need for speed" highly addictive, the clutch was too heavy and the comfort was reasonable. The GSA compared to GS: the handling of GS is slightly better (but not that much better considering the weight difference). The comfort of the GSA is slightly better and it has this rough look that I like. I do big travels, i.e. 1500 km / 16 hours nonstop from Andorra back to Amsterdam and I found that with the GS (2013, one of the earliest LC models) I had to stop every 280/300km to tank. At the end, I think it comes down to looks since it rides the same. Next time maybe another GS but I also dig the Multistrada, although I prefer shafts over chains. If they could make a S1000xr/ GS, that would be amazing.

    • @miragegp
      @miragegp  7 лет назад

      I have never done more than 900 per day on GSA but had one 1450 trip on GS. I was toast. Really tired and it took a while as I have decided to travel over mountain passes. More fun but very hard to keep focus for hours on end. All BMW has to do is bring GS/A to 140HP mark... It might cannibalise XR sales but we know that GS/A is their bread and butter, so sure they won't mind. As road only bike, Multistrada is fantastic but I am so used to (light in my case) off road ability of GS that nothing else really works for me. Not as one do-it-all bike anyway.

    • @vriendelijkegroet
      @vriendelijkegroet 7 лет назад

      miragegp 150 hp must be technically possible since they have this engine. Why did you change GS to GSA anyway?

    • @miragegp
      @miragegp  7 лет назад

      GS felt more responsive to me. Also, easier to handle off road as seat height is slightly lower - I'm 6ft tall.

  • @drn4971
    @drn4971 9 лет назад

    Lets see what happens when big bro 1290 adventure come to the party !

    • @miragegp
      @miragegp  9 лет назад

      No doubt 1290 will be faster but ultimately, these are not sports bikes. BMW will still sell in great numbers. People are used to shaft driven bikes, not that keen to lubricate chains on heavy adventure/touring bikes.

    • @drn4971
      @drn4971 9 лет назад

      miragegp Lubricating And cleaning a chain is very easy,Being able to change gearing is a plus also its much easier to deal with broken chain than shaft.

    • @miragegp
      @miragegp  9 лет назад

      Unless you ride on the track, not much point to change sprockets/gearing. Broken chain can be huge issue - I don't think it happens often but it still requires more maintenance than the shaft. Also, no need to adjust tension on the shaft. I don't mind chain on superbikes though.
