    She does have a beautiful voice. These people should be ashamed of changing her singing to make it sound mechanical. I'm enjoying your take of these clowns who think it sounds better with auto- tune. Thank you for doing this video Fil.

      Jesse Green I certainly agree with the core meaning of your post. However I don't see Fil as a guy that "takes people down". More than anything , he educates in a way that respects technology and honors performers. Faults, gifts and all. I'm really hoping I'm not offending anyone! I'd delete my post if that be the case.

    Fil - ever considered doing an analysis of opera singers? It would be interesting to see how their pitch control compares to pop singers. It would also be a gas to hear an opera singer run thru auto tune. Or it could be very, very weird.

    "If I could turn back time.. " I would let Cher know not to use auto tune for her one song "do you believe".
    Cher is a wonderful performer and used auto tune correctly. Just for a cool sound effect. Musical mockery artists have abused this effect though.

    • @martinheath5947
      @martinheath5947 2 года назад +1

      The production on that record had nothing to do with Cher. The producers were messing around to find a way to make it more "distinctive", they stumbled on this gimmicky effect while experimenting, thought it sounded completely off the wall but cool and no one was more shocked/surprised to hear the mix than Cher herself!

    • @rdmineer1

      I believe Cher used it only for effect, a novelty, like Frampton making the guitar talk.

    The X-Factor audition is clearly heavily processed. AND NOT just autotune! The rehearsal audio is very clean. All I hear is a little reverb, and it sounds like natural reverb from the reflectivity (hardness) of surfaces, like walls, in the room. It is very accurate. As with (almost) anyone singing unaccompanied, she is using natural, rather than equal, temperament and is self-correcting pitch using feedback.
    Where her vibrato ascends a quarter-tone (50 cent?} from "dead on" and then relaxes back into the pure tone, it sounds very natural and intentional. The vocal seems to have numerous little idiosyncrasies that echo some of the great singers who have made "I Will Always Love" the perennial hit it has been for almost 5 decades.
    It sounds far better than the TV performance.
    The producers 'shot themselves in the foot' by applying autotune and/or other effects in post-production. It's nonsense like this that led many of us to stop paying much attention to TV talent competitions several years ago.

  • @pgklee
    @pgklee 2 года назад +33

    My Niece, who is a good singer, used to sing unintentionally in Auto-tune style singing Disney TV show songs where the performers were Auto-tuned or at least pitch corrected. Because that's what she thought the songs were supposed to sound like.

    • @GaryJames864
      @GaryJames864 2 года назад +2

      You mean she sounded mechanical? Had perfect pitch? Or she had an annoying phase shift to her voice because she was singing on pitch and off, both at the same time.

    • @pgklee
      @pgklee 2 года назад +8

      @@GaryJames864 Sounded mechanical (hollow)and robotic. It was acapella with her head voice so the pitch was fine (as far as I could tell as she would choose her most comfortable key). She was manipulating her vocal chords and mouth to get that effect, it really was awesome, her Mom and I both Chuckled I asked her what she was doing. she said " that these guys are really good singers (to be on a TV show), she was 11 at the time, and she wanted to sing just like them" Her Mom said "you sing better" and dropped it.. I don't think up to that point she even knew what Auto-Tune was.

      When you have a reference point of how something 'should' sound, it's much easier to emulate.

    I love these little lectures. They surely give food for thought, which has gotten me into thinking a lot about tone quality and "perfection". How humanity has turned art into industry and measure perfection as the ability of copying in exact measures. But copying is not art, so where have we ended up?
    Having played around some more with the mobile app, I come to a few conclusions about the quality of a voice. Measuring tones of voices is even a method in some health analysis. The more tones your voice consist of, the better health you have. So striving to have a "clear" and mono tone is striving for illness in a roundabout way.
    I also notice that my own singing is sounding more interesting for the ear if there are inconsistencies and flourishes in the app's lines. Ergo, using devices like these may make us direct our intention in the wrong direction, art-wise. Striving for exact and straight lines in a machine is "death". I'd love some analysis by Fil on Indian ragas, where "tones" are cascades of trills and combinations.

    A few years ago, I saw a friend of a friend's daughter who was studying at Juliard do a small charity jazz gig. The band played acoustically and she sang through a small combo amp that I know had no effects.
    Her voice was astounding, but what floored me was her 'party trick' where she imitated the whole 'pitch corrected' sound.
    Possibly something she had done all her life imitating modern songs.

    I saw the original audition a few times over about the last year. She was a 29 year old cashier when she went on the show. It’s worth watching she just shines. It was on “X factor global” or “X factor Ukraine” I was so glad to see you do this particular performance and I wondered How she did on the show I’m glad to hear she won. The phrase the judges used when they stoped her from singing
    With the back up music was they thought she was lip-synching to the song and they thought it was “digitally processed” like in a commercial studio. The best part was when she sung A cappella when she finished she got a standing ovation and you could see the instant she realized the audience loved it. The look on her face is priceless. The show sounded much better then on this video because it wasn’t isolated I suppose. I’m not a musician or singer I do love seeing talent.

Instead of singing the printed lyric, he seems to be singing something else, but for the life of me, I cannot figure it out. The lyric in question is the phrase "is alright by me" but he appears to be saying something like "is alright by happy me". He is trying to match the lyric to the music tempo. we have to remember that it is a tv show and they have to sometimes create some drama, some conflict or something awkward to create some tension in order to draw attention. But it just makes us thinking if the results of the contest is already decided since the beginning.

    I think it may have been at least a couple of years ago when I watched her audition on a RUclips video. If I remember correctly, she first sang with music and the judges made her stop and sing a cappella and she sounded the same. But, then I watched a couple of her personal RUclips videos and to my ear anyways, there didn’t seem to be a great deal of a difference. No matter though, the lady is exceptionally good.

    The first part she is absolutely using auto-tune but it sounds like she is back-feeding and/or adding Tremolo too. The back-feeding might come from the re-recording from the TV but unless she can throat-sing it really sounds like there is an excessive amount of tremble in her voice, if its real? WOW, just WOW! I do however have to admit I really love her voice, she should be much more popular than she is! Oh, and it sure does have that "tunnel" effect like auto-tune.

    So at 11:30 she holds a vibrato, but there is also a warble, an undulation in the vibrato. Like a second harmonic. Amazing!

    Your auto-tune videos are great - I would love to see your analysis of Dusty Springfield's singing from early days and her later stuff (from the Reputation album) - she used a very special but long winded recording technique (since at least the 70s I believe) - she recorded her vocals one syllable at a time. It was frustrating to the producer/engineers - but did it make her voice pitch perfect?

  • @Katya_Lastochka
    @Katya_Lastochka 2 года назад +3

    That makes sense. The judges, actual singers, thought it was so accurate that it sounded like autotune. But the producers, who are not musicians, heard it and thought it doesn't sound like auto-tune enough, or that the public wouldn't agree.
