Zorn is a genius. Good luck trying to pin him down, from free jazz, turntablism, screaming death metal, Jewish night club music, film scores, classical chamber music to techno dance, glam rock tributes and Japanoise, he pretty much does whatever he feels like and it’s always very, very good. I have over 80 of his albums and feel I have only scratched the surface.
I adore this album. I was lucky enough to see them reunite with Mike Patton on vocals instead of Yamatsuka Eye. Mindblowing.
So, this IS the band Naked City.
To be perfectly clear, this is the John Zorn album titled "Naked City". The lineup is John Zorn - sax, reeds, Bill Frisell - electric guitar, Fred Frith - bass guitar, Wayne Horvitz - synthesizers, piano, keyboards, Joey Baron - drums, Yamatsuka Eye - vocals. This lineup continued to do albums, and the rest of their albums were released under the artist name Naked City. Also, tracks from this album are anthologized under the artist name Naked City on the compilation album Torture Garden, and it's included with the rest of the Naked City albums in the Naked City complete studio albums box set
I highly recommend continuing this album. Just wait til you get to the blood-soaked center sequence
"There are eight million stories in the naked city. This has been one of them." the tag line from the 1950s police detective series. These tracks are conceived as imagined soundtracks those stories. Fantastic album. Thanks JP for going there.
I remember when this came out. Reviews compared the music to music from old cartoons. Where the themes and styles change every few seconds to match what’s happening on screen.
And this music does exactly that throughout the album. The songs whiplash from jazz to punk to country to noise, surf, really any style you can think of. Songs will suddenly take off at break neck speed then slow down. Amazing band.
It's been a good day for music. Thanks.
Bill Frisell on guitar. Surfs Up! All Zorn's albums are worth checking out. Musical maps.
The second track, especially in the beginning reminds me of the experimental jazz guitarist Eivind Aarset a bit. Very nice
Next up: "I Whopped Batman's Ass" by Wesley Willis
You should definitely check out the whole album, it's a kinda landmark record, even for Avant Garde standards. Especially w/ Naked City, Joh Zorn's music combines many disparate, diverse genres often on the same track, the results can be sometimes of a person ' surfing' through different radio stations, essential every note of these arrangements is written, perhaps the occasional solos are the exception and might be improvised but this is carefully orchestrated artful sonic collision of worlds, many violent, quirky and eccentric, and the band is a stellar cast of some of NYC bets Avant Garde Jazz musicians , Wayne Horowitz on Keys, Fred Frith on Bass, Joey Baron on Drums and Bill Frisell on Guitar and on some tracks Yamatsuka Eye on vocals/screams.
Zorn, Fred Frith, Henry Cow, Iva Bittova, David Moss, Mickey Hart. In the 80s, WERS in Boston would play these and other groovy, far out musics from beyond the beyond. Great to see this unexpected delight. Yay!
Zorn is phenomenal, well worth investigating further
I really had to wait for a long time... but I never had a doubt you would finally find it. Thanks. Bought it on Vinyl long time ago, now the LP is almost transparent...
WoW! I like this. Just I like the opening of Third by Softmachine.. avant-garde is great
If you like this, you should try Barry Adamson's solo work. Adamson started out as the bassist in Magazine before being a founding member of Nick Caves Bad Seeds. When he went solo, he spent the next decade making soundtracks for films that didnt exist.
...and some for films that did!
Sicilian Clan score is by Ennio Morricone, famous for Good the Bad and the Ugly as well as hundreds of other movie soundtracks. This is one of his styles, although to be fair I think you need to hear his original. I used to collect his soundtracks. I don’t view this as one of his best, but it does bring back memories of the early 70s. Morricone is regarded as one of the greatest film composers of all time. Some of his music is hard to swallow, and some is like gourmet food. A lot depends on taste and context. Some of it works in the film and not apart from it. One thing for sure, he’s distinctive.
Mike Patton, Tom Waits and John Zorn share many of the same session artists
That Batman song brought out the essence of the old '60s Batman which was a lot of vaudeville influence. It was just reminiscent of that era.
It just so happens to be national saxophone day ! This was new to me, really liked the first track. If you’re looking for some bizarre sax playing try James Chance and the Contortions-Contort Yourself. Speaking of the sax how about a return to Morphine?
I suggest checking out his album "Torture Garden" (released under the band name Naked City). Nothing but extreme grindcore mixed with jazz-elements. Quite short songs too. A little less extreme, but more or less in the same style, was his project Pain Killer (with Mick Harris, then in Napalm Death, and Bill Laswell). "Guts Of A Virgin" was their first (and most appreciated) album.
the sicilian clan is a cover from ennio morricone
Zorn is a deep dive. Generally, I enjoy his various endeavors. I find his forays into traditional Jewish music the most satisfying. No matter the genre, Zorn employees top flight musicians so even if I don't enjoy some of work, I can appreciate it.
Convinced me to give it a listen, Justin. Certainly different. Didn't suck. Gave it a like.
Justin - Maybe I'm dreaming, but I'm almost CERTAIN that you reacted to a song off this album a LONG time ago. I vaguely remember you listening to one track...and it was so shocking that you listened to a few other random short tracks on the album with interesting titles....am I wrong? Was I dreaming?
Anywho... this is one of those great albums I've loved since it came out. I take it out and listen to it every once in a while. I find the "noise" somewhat funny (maybe it's just me), but this is an AMAZING band. I saw this same group of musicians at a college in the 90s, performing as Masada - one of Zorn's projects that does a jazzy approach to Jewish cultural music. Amazing stuff, and the drummer is HANDS DOWN the best drummer I've ever seen live. Check out "Alef" the first album from Masada. It's worth the listen! Cheers
And....side note....are you ever gonna react to some Phish? (Can I get an "amen" from Phish heads out there?) You'll be pleasantly surprised by the compositions on their first 4-5 albums.
Amen!
@@jamespaivapaiva4460 Are you related to Moku Paiva?
@@timfeeley714-25 Only by surname, maybe a shared connection to some Portuguese sailor from centuries past.
@@jamespaivapaiva4460 I did not know Paiva was a Portuguese name, it makes sense, Moku's from Hawaii which has a large Portuguese population.
@@timfeeley714-25 Fun fret fact. Portuguese sailors brought their native instruments with them. One of which was the Moorish oud, referred to as the Portuguese guitar. This became the Hawaiian ukulele. Peace and Aloha
The first thing I thought of at the start was Zappa, or Zappa-inspired.
Zorn, rabbit hole for sure...
At last someone with music of John Zorn on RUclips keep up the good work.
I worked on one of Zorns gigs.. he is an absolute lunatic 🤣🤣
Haha, in a good or bad way? :D
John Zorn is a "moving target". From what I remember, he started out completely involved in the bebop end of jazz, and got dissatisfied with what he was doing. Then somehow he ended up in a metal club one night, and went through a long patch where he felt like metal is the Truth. And then he's moved on from that, and tried several new turns since. So if you want to get a handle on what the "John Zorn style" is, you might find that's impossible. Chameleon?
Here's some prog metal of his: ruclips.net/video/uZsz6Rfy9ng/видео.html *Mamarath*
He's also done some more extreme metal (more "metal metal"). I must see if I can find a nice sample of the album he did with Mike Patton maybe ten or fifteen years ago. I seem to recall there was some nice crazy stuff on that.
Looks like his music rights owner (or he, himself) has cleansed RUclips of a lot of what used to be here, so I don't know where you'll find something like Ipsissimus now, if he's decided to make it unhappen. Maybe Spotify?
Some cool fusion of many things - especially oud playing - is *Arab and Jew* ruclips.net/video/shlxqhN3LS0/видео.html (not even close to extreme metal, but not everything has to be extreme metal.)
Check out Curlew, which has similar elements and energy, and did some of their best work in this time period.
Now that you mention it, a dark, jazzy punkish Zappa is a pretty good analogy. I get a lot of film references from Naked City too - film noir or Tarantino or the cartoon-inspired jump cuts. You should try Pain Killer, his trio with Bill Laswell. Darker and heavier than Naked City.
The first shot is working Doctor. Administer another dose nurse, ah yes he is fully inoculated😆✌.
you should do mr bungle now lol
Luv Zorn's stuff quite a bit. Cheers!
Liked the chaos in the first track; the second was technically sound but I don't care for that style of music. With that being said, this is what music exploration is all about. Sometimes we find awesome stuff and sometimes not so much. Keep doing what you're doing!
The first track, frenetic with a very 50's vibe to it, Zappa meets the B52's I thought. Ok, but nothing special. Though all the odd sounds, bells and whistles, so to speak, took me to an earlier time. Very Spike Jones & his City Slickers. The second was originally by Ennio Morricone, soundtrack for a French gangster flick. Pleasant enough, not one of EM's best, but alright, and a decent cover. Would I listen to them again... probably not.
Great music in my opinion.
I quite enjoyed this. Is it perrrrrfect Batman, no. That’s why I dig it.
Hope you react to the rest of the album too. It goes crazy places.
Torture Garden is so much better in my opinion.
I love John Zorn Jewish music and his lounge/surf/filmmusic etc
Is this John zorn, or John zorn and naked city? I’m pretty sure I have this album.
I’ve been enjoying the recent exposure to new artists. When you said Avant-Garde, I was expecting something more experimental. I wasn’t captivated. ⭐️⭐️
The original version by Morricone ruclips.net/video/NVVvqikHDZ0/видео.html
I’ve tried to get into John Zorn a number of times, as I usually really love avant garde and experimental music, but something about his work just doesn’t speak to me.
I had not heard of John Zorn before. I loved the atmosphere of the second track. The album cover, however, was making me feel a little nauseous!
The photo is by a NYC crime photographer called Weegee. A book of his work was called Naked City.
@@thirdcoast5755 Thanks for the info. I think I might have seen a documentary about him on BBC 2, some years ago.
