Played over 3000 live shows and counting….
Greatest pop band since The Beatles. Absolutely brilliant catalog of music.
I grew up near DC and listened to WHFS. They played all of the alternative and English Indie that would not get played elsewhere.
An HFS DJ once said on air that Andy Partridge had an identity crisis. He thought he was Paul McCartney.
@@edalder2000 funny line… and if you’re going to be compared, it might as well be with the best. Partridge truly is a great songwriter.
I really think they're the greatest band of all time period.
@@AdolphSaxOfficial They're in the conversation, for sure.
@@edalder2000 right? WHFS played. XTC quite a bit. Weren't we lucky?
XTC had a huge hit with Senses Working Overtime. And it IS X.T.C.
That and Dear God are their masterpieces, imho.
EXACTLY. Pronounce the letters, not the drug.
Oranges & Lemons is one of the greatest albums of all time. Every song is great. And the musicianship is absolute top-drawer. I bought it when it first came out and I'm still listening to it regularly.
So right Gina - from the home of XTC, Swindon. Keep spreading the word
Its not ecstasy, its X T C.
A perfect pop song with an absolutely killer bass line!
I think you'd REALLY dig their side project as The Dukes Of Stratosphear.
Brainiac's Daughter....
Quite Possibly the GREATEST songwriters of all time! XTC are simply the very BEST! I highly recommend their entire catalog. True masters at work here that were focus on making real
MUSIC not MONEY.
Moulding & Partridge are up there with Lennon/McCartney as song writers.
I agree, except unlike Lennon/McCartney they didn’t ever write as a “duo”. Andy wrote songs, Colin wrote songs, and they just which ones were best for the album. You probably know this, but I thought it might be interesting for others who read the comments.
They stopped touring in 1982 due to Andy Partridge's anxiety issues. "XTC gave up touring in 1982 after Partridge suffered a nervous breakdown on a Paris stage. (He had a long dependence on valium to conquer his stage fright; his wife had thrown out his pills without telling him.) After that, the band became a studio group."
Hard to create a following when the lead singer has stage fright.
I was privileged to have seen them perform live on their 1982 American tour opening for The Police. They brought the goods that night.
@@randydoak6638 XTC opened for the Police in 1980-1981. In 1982 they began a world tour to support the newly released English Settlement album. Andy had a breakdown in Paris and the European tour was cancelled. Three or four weeks later they started off their U.S. Tour in San Diego CA. That was early April 1982, and it was their last live performance ever. The next night they were going to open in Los Angeles but Andy couldn't go onstage. They flew home and the rest is history.
I was at that final show at the California Theater in San Diego. Jools Holland and His Millionaires opened for them. A night to remember. :)
After Andy's episode in Paris, they tried again a few weeks later. Starting in San Diego CA for their U.S. tour, they put on a great performance, but the following night Andy's stagefright demons caught up with him and he failed to go onstage. That was their last show.
I never get tired of hearing this song. It's *really* clever (both musically and lyrically) without being clever-clever: a lovely, clear melody the milkman could whistle, with plenty of interesting things going on underneath that, including, as others have noted, that magnificent bassline. And the strapline is so disarmingly pure: "I may be the Mayor of Simpleton but I know one thing and that's I love you." Sort of echoing the sentiments of Sam Cooke's Wonderful World, but in a completely original way.
Been listening to this song since 89. My sister played it for me and I fell in love ever since. It will never ever get old.
XTC are such a great band and this is such a great song! Colin Moulding is a criminally underrated bass player (and that’s a Wal bass he’s using on this tune, JPan). The story is sad, but they ended up doing well off of some reissues (remastered by Porcupine Tree’s Steven Wilson!)
This is not a basic pop song, it's very sophisticated. The bass guitar is extremely intricate and there is sophisticated harmony. Try watching Beato's analysis of this song. The lyrics are great too but it's not "all about the lyrics".
This is my favorite band..or should I say favorite song writers Andy Partridge and Colin Molding..beautifully constructed songs that are much deeper and more profound than the Beatles could even achieve..so underrated and under played..Oranges and lemons this album is a towering achievement in musical history.
Dear, God is a song I like by them.
Loved XTC! Hugely popular during the late 70s and early 80s with a huge string of hits!!. So glad they survived appaling management issues and are still with us!. Sadly it echoes the appaling management of Badfinger in the 70's who turned them over big time resulting in the most tragic of circumstances
This may be one of the most beautiful love songs ever written.
Have all of them. Andy is a genius
Justin if you go down their rabbit hole you'll get stuck there, you can throw a dart at any of their songs and hit the bullseye every time. Someone once said XTC was GOD's apology for the Beatles breaking up.
Saw XTC in Bristol, UK when The Police were their support band.
Saw XTC is Seattle when they were the support band for The Police.
Generals and majors was another great hit in 1981
The greatest band you've never heard of xtc
Such an underappreciated band. One of my favorite bands of all time...
Another thing that may be of interest to you. Andy Partridge's Mother was a nervous wreck and brought him up giving him Valium (Diazapam) from a child. He thought it was normal. He became dependent on the drug but on the American tour his girlfriend threw his supply away after an argument, he went into withdrawal, couldn't get another supply and had a nervous breakdown. It was tragic what happened to such a fantastic band but their legacy lives on.
She threw away his pills just before the European tour and he had a breakdown in Paris. After regrouping, they flew to the U.S. to start their American tour in San Diego. But the whole tour ended with the one San Diego performance, because at the next stop in Los Angeles Andy couldn't go on stage and XTC flew home to England.
There is an interesting book called "So You Wanna Be a Rock & Roll Star" by Jacob Slichter. He was the drummer for the band Semisonic in the late 90s. He goes into a lot of detail on how the record contracts worked. The labels basically forwarded the band money to hire a producer, rent a studio, and record an album, which put the band in debt. Then, the labels put themselves at the front of the line for sales and royalties, and the band got paid last, if at all. It was a totally crooked system for bands that weren't selling millions of records.
Prounced X-T-C. Listen to the bass line. Colin Moulding is one of the best, unnoticed bass players ever.
They have so many different styles.check Go2 or Black Sea
Don't think for a second that this is what all their music sounds like.
Great song but it's one of their more straightforward songs..
Way more creative songs await you..
They cared first about music and money was an afterthought. All too common for that era. They put the music first, but we (the listeners) benefited from it because the quality and caliber of music from that time was simply outstanding.
XTC wrote a song about their shit manager called "I Bought Myself A Liarbird".
Give it a listen. It's pretty damn good.
I’d like to see that contract 🤨
Just shows you how greedy the record companies are… how much money did XTC make them over the decades and they don’t even have the decency to throw them a bone when the mismanagement came to light.
Superb band. And yes, of course, it's 'X-T-C'
Look out for Andy Partridge writing for The Monkees in 2016; You bring the summer - amazing
My 2 favorite albums, drums and wires and skylarking!
Not sure if mentioned yet but Dave Greggory, one of the guitar players.....you saw him on the Big Big Train video I sent you. Great player.
Dave Gregory has a band called TIN SPIRITS, checkout the Live cover of this (on youtube)... Bassist is playing this line and singing at same time
Dave Gregory has also played with Peter Gabriel. And latest with the fantastic Big Big Train.
XTC were a phenomenal art rock band. They have a ton of great music, and as you heard, Colin Moulding plays a mean bass. I hope someone hires you to listen to more. 😊
“Basic pop & alt rock” WTF! Their songs are beautifully crafted, listen to some of the albums and I’m sure you’ll understand why they’re so loved.
i'm sure... this was my first time hearing them. I have since recently heard Dear God which is a really fantastic song. Obviously they can write.
Seriously. I love this song, but you can't start with it, and feel you've got a grasp on them. PLEASE listen to Senses Working Overtime, Making Plans for Nigel, everything. Geez. Nothing personal.
You have to check out complicated game ,and millions from drums and wires!! From 1979, so bloody talented, XTC just amazing!!!
Second the “COMPLICATED GAME” recommendation! That song is an earth-shaking masterpiece… and shows how dark they could get.
Drums and wires is a masterpiece, along with their other albums
Swindon's finest 👌
Remember when XTC formed an alter ego band Dukes of the Stratosphere?
Great albums: Skylarking, Nonsuch, Apple Venus.
SKYLARKING, for God's Sake! It's absolutely genius with Todd Rundgren producing.
I have a Skylarking req in the queue, stay tuned...
Their last album was in 2000. The final two albums (1999, 2000) are not available on streaming, but are two of their best.
The idea of the strike was because anything they recorded during that period would have been owned by the label they were in dispute with, and so they decided to wait until the contract was up before recording and releasing the final 2 albums. I don't think they ever stood outside Virgin holding a sign 😂
If you know any of their songs it will probably be be "Dear God", or "The Ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead" which was covered for the film Dumb and Dumber.
Listen to the entire English Settlement album. It’s a masterpiece.
And some folk wonder why so many of us have ZERO trust in people 'in the biz'!
Yeah, back then record companies would not pay out anything unless they made back their investment & some profit. But Virgin's inability to market XTC's material was actually the reason for the failures... so the band got no benefits. It really didn't help that no one in the US, except for the small group of big fans, got to hear the band. They were 'too English' is what you heard back then to play on US radio. When the band went 'on strike against Virgin, they created the psychedelic-homage band "The Dukes of Stratosphere". It's a great disc... and I think would impress you.
XTC is one my 5 top bands.
Good that you love XTC too ... but you made a mistake here: Dukes of Stratosphere recorded their two albums in 85 and 87 ... the strike was between 93 and 99
@@ericambler486 Right you are! Thanks...
IDK this song, just have their first album and only know their hit "Making Plans for Nigel". So, JP, when you get some obscure song (not saying this is/was Rob) to listen to, do you listen a little bit to their hits, out of curiosity, to hear if you know the band?
OK, so you answered my question at the end, cool.
Not "ecstasy", but literally X.T.C. I was playing this just the other day -- great summer driving music. I first heard XTC back in the early 80's from the songs "Waiting for Nigel" and "Generals and Majors" which were in regular rotation on indie/alt-rock radio. But yeah, a criminally poorly managed band. What's ironic is that Richard Branson actually appears in the Generals and Majors video. Btw, Dave Gregory went on to join Big Big Train, a modern prog band you recently did a reaction for, Justin.
Making Plans For Nigel
@@rogerpatton2242 D'oh -- you are correct. But hey, it was 40 years ago and my brain ain't what it used to be!
GREAT BAND!!!
Getting screwed in the Music Business. 😮 Wow, how did that happen? Story as old as time. These guys were good though.
To anyone reading this comment.... this request came about because of the TMBG request "XTC vs Adam Ant" a month ago... "content vs form" as the lyrics go in that song... Does anyone have an Adam Ant track to "challenge" this XTC content? 😁
A cautionary tale to be sure! VAT is a non-US tax structure: value added tax. You want a headache? Read about that!
Yeah, their stuff is hooky as hell!
Partridge was a producer which is probably how he was able to survive.
this makes me so angry! 😡😡 these guys deserved so much for what they did. I will contribute money for them to fight these assholes
Burning shed or ape records are their current LEGIT label
I recognize every song you mentioned I know they're catalog well You should do a really deep dive and do every song they did.
A fun song. The video looks like it was meant to be a tribute to TV classic The Avengers
Yes it was
Oh my gosh, this is the most enjoyable reaction watching you cringe through everything you are reading. I had no idea all these money issues the band had, but man could they crank out the music. I am all in on the cult and highly recommend you do full album listens to Oranges and Lemons and Skylarking. Please.
I will take your heart on the comment as a yes, that you will do the full album reaction. Let’s go for Skylarking first.
Never heard that story about their mismanagement. Christ on a crutch! They do have a lot of cool songs. I wish they were making money from them, though. Making Plans for Nigel, Senses Working Overtime, Dear God, are just a few of the tracks I’d recommend.
That's how I usually describe them to people. The Beatles with a drop of They Might Be Giants. But way better than both.
Listen to their alter egos - Dukes of Stratosphear - Chips from the Chocolate Fireball. Awesome '60's psychedelic rock.
XTC is one of those bands I need to listen to the whole discography. They are mentioned constantly on music channels. Very underrated. I remember a few if their hits. Good stuff. And yes it’s X T C, not ecstasy.
Go listen to Queen's "Death on Two Legs". It's about pretty much the same situation with Queen - a shitty rip-off manager. But Freddie and Brian got back at him with that song! It's vicious - don't fuck with (a) Queen!
Also to the commenters - For sure, Senses Overtime was my 2nd choice (after I reconsidered Pumpkinhead b/c reasons...), but I wanted to go more 90s feel with this request than 80s... Senses Working Overtime very 80s, almost a Squeeze song, right?
OMG. Justin, don't scare me like this! 😆 Your thumbnail expression is the only one ever that says "worse than Hold Your Fire".... I almost felt like waiting until tomorrow to hear my request get J-Panned as trivial pop songwriting...😑 I had *zero* knowledge of the business side of XTC... so didn't know that was the thumbnail. Wow, this is not a train wreck, this is the Titanic... It simply never should have been allowed to happen...
One of my favourite bands of ever. You absolutely have to do Dear God.
I did a Good Cover Bad Cover of Dear God, its on the channel
Hey where’s todays comments segment???
Sorry to hear about their royalties. XTC should have done what TLC did.
I never knew they got so screwed over. That's awful for such a massively talented band. They wrote great songs and still get regular play time on my rotation.
They got paid by the label - back then, they'd lend you the money for your album, and then you had to tour and have hits to pay it back before you got to make your millions. They all own houses and are worth a bit of money now, but never earned what they deserved, from a critical standpoint.
You need to start with their first album and work through to the last to appreciate how good this band are
"Dear God" was their biggest hit... Fantastic song.
Not in the UK... Making Plans for Nigel. Their manager and record label rinsed them
"DEAR GOD" = great song.
ex-tee-see not ex-tuh-see
Beatles, XTC, Kinks, Stones.
Always liked this. Somewhat of a more complex pop song as Rick Beato on his RUclips channel breaks it down.
Yes, XTC was robbed, literally and figuratively.
X-T-C 😁
They were young and naïve. The music changed a lot. From spiky, angular weirdness to delicate pastoral and everything in between. To me, some of it is fantastic and some is kinda meh. Interesting band.
The song Dear God could make for a good cover etc video. Sarah Mclachlan did a very good, my opinion, cover of it. The original became an accidental hit starting on college radio because it was the b side, and DJ’s started playing it more than the a side here in the States.
Try "senses working overtime"
Check out Senses Working Overtime”
X.T.C wrote some very clever songs but it would seem they were overly naive/trusting when it came to the music industry and their management.
Love XTC. That's wild about them not making a penny from all that. I thought it was bad how New Order lost money on the UK's biggest hit single Blue Monday because of the cost of manufacturing the fancy EP lol, but this is a nightmare.
It also sucks there was this one hit wonder band in the mid 90s who's song completely ripped off Mayor. I don't know the song title but the chorus was "The right time... to rollll to me". Its a simpler version of Simpleton, but my God they should have been sued (although the musical similarities were probably not enough to hold up in court, the entire tone and sound of the song is just too much a clone to ignore).
I know what song you’re talking about. Dont know the name off hand but have it in my ear.
@@JustinPanariello The song is "Roll to me by Del Amitri."
Can't reiterate this enough: X...T...C. Not 'ecstasy'.
Publishing rights?
VAT = value added tax. European thing.
It's pronounced X. T. C. not Ecstasy
is a wreck you’re right
catalogue of great songs.. proper artists 👍
XTC, thats the name, not ecstasy FFS!
Exx Tee Cee, not ecstasy
No. It's X.T.C.
El bajo la clava
XTC...
Well, their story is far more interesting than the song itself.
I don’t think any band has as interesting a catalog as XTC… from dark, heavy tunes (“complicated game” and “Travels in Nihilon”) to breezy folk pop… to jazz-influenced angular songs… to 60s homage to… you name it, they could do it.
