    From the customer description, it sounds like the card connector is pressing against the case side panel due to large card/cable connector and not enough case clearance. If they don't want to put card in proper sized case, there is a 90 and 180 degree adapter available so that power cable is connected at a different angle and should reduce the space requirements from the cable sticking out directly from the card.
    Appreciate all your quality videos and hope that your clients appreciate the detailed work you provide. Hoping I never have a need for such repairs but know where I will go first if the time ever comes.

  • @MaD_fX
    @MaD_fX Год назад +11

    The customer wrote what happened(albeit vaguely) and this is what a lot of 4080 and 4090 users experience - due to size of the card and the fact that the connector is parallel to the card's board, once the cable is plugged in and if your case is not big enough you're likely to have a clearance issue with the side panel of the case. Customer obviously encountered that and perhaps was trying to force the panel close. As the panel would be pressing on the cables and not the connector itself the force would be applied at an angle, breaking off the connector as a result.
    Having said that - each of the broken pins has a deep groove visible on the cross-section - almost as if the pins are not solid but have a little through-hole in them, if that's so then of course they're going to break with force applied.

  • @NewRetroRepair
    @NewRetroRepair Год назад +6

    The 12VHPWR sockets/cables have two problems, both related to tolerances. The standard 12VHPWR adapter cable that comes with NVIDIA 40XX cards fits extremely tightly into the socket. I own a 4090 and it takes a LOT of force to properly plug the cables in, the latch doesn't lock down and hold it in place without a lot of force. The two problems are that people can use too much force and break the connector, or not enough force in which case the socket and cable can burn up because they aren't properly mated.
    You might want to advise customers to use an alternative 12VHPWR cable to the standard one that ships with the 40 series, or advise them to use a tiny amount of lubricant on the plastic of the factory provided cable. Depends on if the replacement 12VHPWR sockets you're using have more forgiving tolerances than the factory installed ones.

    This is not really about the connector, this is about using the big fat card in a too small case. The connector is getting wrecked because guy closes the side panel which puts continuous heavy pressure on the connector due to the cable being squeezed by the closed case side panel. He needs a new case or a special connector that fits between the card and the side panel.

    Most common for breaking the connector is simply to tight PC chassies where the side press on the cable and make the bend to harch. The cable cant bend as much and the connector breaks off. There are however adaptors (jays2cent) that works with these cards so the cable goes eather straight up or down from the connector on the GPU.

    i've been building computers for years and never have had issues with connectors.
    but i understand how most components are made so i don't use the Hercules method when connecting things.
    But i will admit, in some cases when the connector has a small lock tab on it sometimes it is hard to get it to go in that far because the pin sockets are tight when new.
    i actually used silicone grease one time just to see if it would help lol (you know the silicone grease you use like on spark plug boots and other type electrical plugs).
    i found if something doesn't go together easily then something is wrong and have to look further into it to see why.
    i guess some folks get impatient and loose their minds? then things start to break ;o)

    So yet another issue with these new connectors. The problem here is that most cases/chassis on the market do not have enough width to accommodate both the width of the GPU and then also the arching cable and the result is that people have to push against the cable/connector when closing the side panel and this can cause the connector breaking like this. Cablemod are now offering modded sleeved cables with angled connector/contact to mitigate this issue. Another option for those that have enough room in their case is to get a riser cable and mount the GPU vertically in the case. My case the Coolermaster Mastercase SL600M is one of those cases with enough room to fit these new cables as it has 191 mm worth of width for CPU coolers before hitting the glaspanel. But many cases today only have 150-170 mm worth of space and that is a problem with these cards.

HP recalled thousands of the laptops and fitted new motherboards. Mine was not on the list of serial numbers recalled but it failed. HP tried a bios fix to bring on the cooling fans which meant that the fan was almost constantly running before the recall. After threatening with legal action they admitted that it had the same fault and replaced my motherboard which lasted less than a year after the repair with the same symptoms.

I personally think nvidia was really stupid with their design by putting in a straight up connector. The 30 series cards had an angle along the length of the card at a shallow angle and this solution is best. I also upgraded to a proper atx 3.0 supply and it also helped. A 90 degree adapter should be what nvidia include instead of the dumb straight adapter. Nvidia was cutting costs for sure when they decided to use this connector and adapter combination.

    Been a long time watcher/student/fan and will be up your way at the end of the year to buy some equipment.
    I plan to come by the new shop as I want to look at everything I want to buy in person and up close. Of course I'll have questions.
    What is a good time of day to come by? I don't want to interrupt your daily business.
    Another great show Sir.

    PCb's are so much better these days. I remember in early 1980's a solder sucker would often suck off the pad. You had to be very careful.

    Doesn't take an electrical or mechanical engineer to see that they have reduced the total amount of copper used to save a few cents, whilst simultaneously designing a literal fire hazard.
    I hope they get clapped with a class action. This is an absolutely ridiculous issue that fixed a non existent problem. 8 pins are capable of well over 300 watts each, and definitely even a single one of those connectors would have similar if not more surface area than the 12vHPWR.
    Even the 'diameter' of the individual pins are far less than the individual pins of the 8 pins. Hell, the total form factor is almost the size of a USB 3.0 header.
    It's a wonder it can even draw 400 watts without cooking an eggs Benedict and setting the house on fire while you render a JPEG

    You are like the ER show, House show or Good Doctor of GPUs. It would be funny if a TV drama series was made on computer and gadget repair with costumers begging the computer repair man based on you to fix their broken electronics but done in a dramatic style similar to the hospital and surgery shows.

    In my humble opinion, if I noticed this, the GPU hitting a side panel, I would build the GPU vertically, or use a 90° adapter at minimum. Sometimes you cannot build in these horizontal. Also, these days motherboards are foreseen with reinforced PCIe slots, it protects the mobo PCB yes, but you place the stress elsewhere. And then it's just a matter of time when the thinner PCBs from the GPUs starts to crack, especially on the weaker parts. And with the heavier cards. Everybody laughs with the support bracket that is provided with the card, this is not without reason. The exception are the Intel cards, these are less big. You won't see these on your bench for fractures, or it has an electronic malfunction.

    all 6 pins away from the 4 small pins are ground the 6 pins closest to the 4 small pins are 12v and the 4 small are sense pins. that go to the power supply to tell it how much power it can give. if 3/4 are connected it will provide 450W if all 4 600W and 2 i believe is 300W. and the reason they were melting was because they were not fully plugged in causing extra resistance. it was user error not a defect in the connector.
