Heh trust me, Ketamine is one of the best painkillers out there! It's usually the last stop before HEMS anaesthetise someone purely so they're not aware of the pain. It's also unspeakably wacky stuff, you are still aware OF the pain, but your mind is so "dissociated" from your body that it's kinda not your pain any more. Not only that, but it can cause intense visions and dreams which some people find unpleasant.
It can have an adverse reaction.

In German ER Ketamine is almost always used in combination with Midazolam, due to the bad psychological effects it has when applied alone.

Funnily enough, the risk of hallucinations from ketamine is mostly affecting adult patients. In children, ketamine is often used for minor surgery because, contrary to other drugs, it does not affect breathing so the patient doesn't have to suffer intubation, and they don't seem to experience hallucinations. The brain is a strange organ!

Put him out like you would on the operating table and then free him, no? Clearly, if it was that logical, they would’ve done that, but that would make the most sense to me…
This issue with that is you often have to intubate the patient. And doing that in a pigsty obviously has infection problems and also he was sitting upright. It’s hard to stick tubes down someone’s throat when they are sitting upright, and can’t move because hand is stuck.
Was it a pleasant experience? Hell no.
Do I think the doctors made the right decision in terms of taking the least risky approach. Yep!!

@@ddgrr8893 I think yall would be crying like little bitches too😂🤷🏼♂️ Farmers are a tough breed, but when you get impaled by a rusty spike thats about 3-4 inches long especially in your hand when there are so many nerves and ligaments... Also they dont pull anything out of your body unless your in surgery because by that point your under anesthetics.

Oh wow, when I took an accidental overdose, I was so calm thinking I was going to die although I was in agony.
A heart attack later after collapsing for 12 hours, plus 10 more hours in Urgent Treatment, I felt normal again.

I hated ketamine. I really really thought I was dying. I felt i couldn't breathe and everything got dark. Most people feel good with ketamine. I'm just one of the unfortunate few that didn't. That was the most scared I've ever been in my life and I've almost died 3 times from massive blood loss or shock. Ketamine was scarier for me than that.

I've seen other clips in this series and I think only the helicopter team has access to ketamine. Plus they probs have to determine through procedures if it's actually necessary or even safe to give

Not for an injury of that severity. It would have taken multiple injections, plus it would take too long to take affect. Not practical in that unhygienic situation.

Imagine spending tens of thousands of pounds per flight on a non-life threatening injuries like this. No wonder NHS is bleeding money and not enough funds to support hospital staffs salaries.
They are needed because a normal ambulance crew don't carry the heavier drugs needed for this. They don't carry Ketamine which is what was needed for this man. Plus the air-ambulances are all funded as a charity - only the paramedics and doctors wages would be paid via the NHS.
They examine all the options. It's easy to be a keyboard politician and whine about where funds go. Most injured patients go in regular ambulances. Having a quick response helicopter is vital for a lot of circumstances. Be lucky you live in a country where healthcare is cheap. Here in America, we pay through the nose for our healthcare. When we complain here we do it for a reason.
