Torpedomtb most rich guys don't spend money. They invest money on cars that will gain value over the years. Jay Leno is cool simply because he enjoys all of his cars and bikes. He buys them because he is a true petrolhead, uses them, have fun with them and doesn't care about the depreciation
I've seen this bike is person and talked to Jay about it at The Rock Store many years ago. What he didn't tell you is that in the twisting mountain roads of California, you can literally hear this bike coming from about a mile away, as the sound of the jet engine echos off the canyon walls. I vividly recall hearing the low rumble of countless motorcycles, then suddenly this high-pitched "whoosh" that made everyone look up the road saying, "What the hell _is_ that noise?"
Luthorville: Building an Off-Grid Mojave Tiny House he seldom goes up there anymore like before. Very cool guy man. Not me. Hollywood at all. Thanks for sharing your story btw
I met him at the same spot (possibly on the same day). I also remember hearing that jet sound before he arrived and after he left! I also vividly remember him asking everyone to keep their distance before firing it up so nobody would get burned.
I wonder how much fuel consumption changes with speed? Jets tend to be most efficient at relatively high/constant throttle settings, so it may actually be most efficient when annihilating the speed limit.
@@ROmaniac21 yes yes Torque! I'm glad that someone still remembered that movie, it is "The Fast and The Furious" but with bikes, this bike can destroy the whole city street!
I still remember the interview you did, talking about this bike, when the guy behind you was so interested in what you were riding got too close and melted his front bumper. I never get tired of your collection and love for it.
It's not a jet (turbojet) engine, it's a turboshaft engine. A jet engine produces thrust, this produces torque. Instead of the exhaust going through a nozzle and producing thrust, it drives a power turbine attached to an output shaft instead.
Some Dude definitely wasn't a honda, unless he's told this story multiple times and can't remember himself/others are telling it and changing the car make.
Yes!! I've been waiting to see more of this bike. I remember that in the previous video (maybe on your channel?) there was a mention of a Nissan behind the bike at a traffic light; as the light turned green, the Nissan began to melt. Thank you Mr. Leno.
I actually met Jay at The Rock Store in Malibu Canyon one day when he pulled up on this bike! It was awesome! He and I actually spoke for about a minute or so before he had to leave. Super cool guy and baaaadddaaaasss bike!
I'd seriously enjoy it IF Leno, *_you'd_* have your own comedy-talk-reality show on Comedy Central! This online / cable / RUclips one IS pretty good though.
I think the funny thing is that this bike gets its maximum fuel economy at its top speed of 237 mph. And at those speeds its more fuel efficient than any car that can reach those speeds, like the Bugatti Veyron which guzzles 1.4 gallons per minute at 268 mph. While the MTT Y2K gets 4 mpg in the city and 17 mpg on the highway, it likely achieves somewhere in the ballpark of 25 mpg at 240 mph as my best guess (the new model reaches 250 I recall), since with any jet engine without thermal regenerators (unlike the Chrysler Turbine) they are most efficient at really high speed as you waste less and less heat the higher the rpm of the output turbine and the higher the load (thanks aerodynamic drag). Its really too bad that a street legal motorbike has no real purpose going anything over 100 mph to 120 at the most, but at least MTT can truly say that the Y2K is the best and most fuel efficient motorbike at what it does, which is going really fast. For comparison, the Kawasaki Ninja H2R can get roughly 32 mpg highway. Its got dismal fuel economy compared to other bikes since its top speed is 240 mph and its made for high speed and high power, not long range. The Y2K drops into the same "superbike" or maybe "hyperbike" class. If the Ninja H2R gets 32 mpg at 60 mph, then calculating that out with a quadrupling in air resistance for every doubling in speed (aka 4x speed experiences 16x air resistance since its a square function) the Ninja H2R only achieves a measly 8 mpg, or 1 gallon every 2 minutes compared to the 1 gallon per 8 minutes that the Y2K engine guzzles at any speed. The H2R is 1.8 GPH at highway and 30 GPH at top speed, while the Y2K is 7.5 GPH at highway and around the same 7.5 GPH at top speed, maybe 8 or 9 in a less perfect environment.
Mixtape Dropper I'm guessing you've never ridden a bike with an underseat exhaust, then? Because it sucks enough dealing with the heat put off by your standard twin, and those don't get this hot.
Wicked, but cool as hell! Just firing it up worths the expense, I guess. Imagine those unaware of this bike's existence waiting for a regular bike's engine starting sound and then... priceless. Wait, why's this video so damn small?... I mean, short?... I mean... just forget about that one.
Talk about scaring yourself! That's the thing you need. Ever seen the Jet Vette? Jay, if it is ever possible, I'd like to see a feature on this turbine powered 1978 Corvette someday!
Jay, you "pre-showed" a STEAM motorcycle couple years ago (with Dennis Gage) and said you will show it in another episode, but there's no updates about steam vehicles for years... It's very sad, very interesting motorcycle
The exhaust is 1400 degrees, not the whole bike. Those are normal motorcycle brakes. (normal 1999 brakes, newer ones will be much better) What he was referring to is engine braking, or compression braking, which is only a small part of braking force if used at all. Diesel engines are the same way.
did they raise your life Insurance premiums or even cancel the policy after posting the video. jay u the man would love 1 day on the interstate with that bike
I’ve seen Jay on this bike at the Rock Store in the Malibu mountains about 15 years ago prob. Give or take a few years. Ran into him there a couple times actually back then but he had this bike out once. The delay time to speed up or slow down quickly makes it so scary to me to even ride it.
465lb/ft torque oh 😳 For people who may not know. 50lb/ft is great for most 400lb bikes. 85+lb/ft is reaching omg levels. But, 475 pound feet is just out of this world.
jay leno manages to be cool for his entire life
uh no.. just a rich dude who spends his money on cool things..

Very cool story! I wouldn't ride this beast if someone paid me a million bucks! Too much power and speed.
8 minutes Per Gallon, replace odometer with Alarm clock. Nice bike. Thanks for the great video.

@MultiSweeney1 suited for the autobahn
@@MultiSweeney1yeah these things accelerate faster at 100-200 compared to 0-100. Jet engines don't like running at low RPMs.
Coolest start-up sound. Needs to be in a superhero movie.
watch Torque ;)

neither does he; look at the brand new tires

Still love the story about him melting the bumper of a Lexus that pulled up behind that bike in traffic!
I think it was a Nissan, I wanna say Altima or Maxima, but a great story none the less.
it was a civic
Some Dude definitely wasn't a honda, unless he's told this story multiple times and can't remember himself/others are telling it and changing the car make.
I'm not gonna go rewatch his original episode for the 4th time. I'm just gonna say I think he said it was some honda
Ahh see I heard the story on top gear, and im quite sure he mentioned Nissan there....possibility Lexus though.
Still my favourite bike ever. Got my leg roasted by one at Goodwood a few years back.

Does it have a bumper to bumper warranty?
Axel Keller the real question is can you come up with an original joke
No, but life long warranty on the turbine. Although your life might not last that terribly long on that monster.
It doesn't but it has more quirks than you can shake a stick at.
