In truth love is undefinable. We can't define it yet it is the most beautiful thing in the universe. We can't describe it, we can't understand it. The only time someone ever comes close to that is when they have fallen in love, and even then it is impossible to completely explain. Yet we're okay with that because of how wonderful it is. It makes wiser, and teaches us things that would be impossible to believe otherwise. When you love someone you care bout there happiness and safety over your own. You would do anything. Even if you had to cross the universe, even if you had to be tortured, even if you had to die, even if you had to spend an eternity in hell you would do anything to ensure their true happiness and safety. No matter what. I know that last part is a little dark but it's the truth.
Actually, there is a word for that. It’s love. I’m in love with her, okay? If you’re looking for the word that means caring about someone beyond all rationality and wanting them to have everything they want no matter how much it destroys you, it’s love. And when you love someone you just, you…you don’t stop, ever. Even when people roll their eyes, and call you crazy. Even then. Especially then. You just- you don’t give up. Because if I could just give up…if I could just, you know, take the whole world’s advice and- and move on and find someone else, that wouldn’t be love. That would be… that would be some other disposable thing that is not worth fighting for. But I- that is not what this is." 😪
Talk to a divorce lawyer (and I worked for a few)...LOVE is mostly myth. It is a kernel of an idea...like rainbows naturally fleeting and illusive, and incapable of being captured or sustained. It has been inflated and massaged into this lofty notion foisted us to somehow look upon the person we have built our lives with, under the layers of the years replete with mortgages, car repairs, dirty diapers and pet stained carpets, long lines at the pick-up/drop off lanes, and say THIS IS NOT my soulmate. Where are the chimes and the chorus of angels... Nope...love is trudging through the mud and muck and misery of life and to claim to someone YOU are worth ALL THIS EFFORT!
I have watched this at least 20times. I refuse to give up on love and I refuse to give up on anyone I love until I find out that they are meant for me or not. I won't give up. I simply just can't
then by God Joel, don't. Don't ever give up. People will call you crazy. People will demand you forget and give up. But love is worth it. Even a taste of if is worth it. So when the entire world says she isn't, listen to that tiny, almost silent voice inside you that keeps saying... "she is to me."

And what carries you through when she's married to someone else, has children by that person and lives in a beautiful mansion... Because isn't that what Robin did...she lived with Barney and travelled the world with HIM. HIMYM is not about this soulmate thing. It's about marking the passage of time with someone. For Ted, it was Robin, then Victoria, then Robin, then Stella, then Zoey etc...etc.
If you love someone, you dont stop, its true, you get them out of trouble even if it hurts you, you help them, you care for them, you ask how their day was, not because its nice, but because you love them, even when its something as mundane as how their day was, you care because you love them.

What is most devastating about this speech is that we never once heard Ted speak with this type of conviction about Tracy...Tracy was never the love of his life, she was just another woman in Ted's never ending quest to get Robin, she just happened to be the most compatible woman who stuck around the longest and ended up being the mother of his children
Also, he totally does. In the "robots vs wrestlers" episode where he imagines running to her door and asking for 45 more days with her (or even 45 seconds) because of how valuable his time with her is.
"If you’re looking for the word that means caring about someone beyond all rationality and wanting them to have everything they want no matter how much it destroys you, it’s love!" - Ted, would someone who actually loved you WANT you to destroy yourself for their sake, or let you continue choosing the path of loneliness and self-destruction? "If I could just take the world's advice and move on and find someone else, that wouldn't be love!" Actually, it would. *For yourself* . Why would you keep choosing someone over and over... who isn't going to choose you back? Sure, they may say they "love" you, too, but if you're obviously not a priority in their life and they don't do anything to make YOU feel just as happy or secure, you SHOULD move on. Destroying yourself for another person is never healthy whether you're in a relationship or not. "But you just don't give up, because you love them!" Feeling love for them is one thing and you can always be happy for them, but acting upon those feelings only to feel empty all the time is incredibly harmful to you. "Well, we don't get to choose who we love!" True to some extent, but you DO get to choose who you devote yourself, your heart and your time to. So why that person? Sure, it's love. And it's one-sided love. THAT isn't worth fighting for. Not if you're the only fighter. Overall, very moving delivery with this particular speech, but I will always disagree with what's specifically being said. Even Ted seemed to have some reluctance before finishing some of his sentences, like he knew deep down he was fighting a lost cause (for the time being, anyway).
Jill theredhedgehog it wasn’t a lost cause watch the series and you’ll know ted was following his gut - (gut a mix of logic and emotions made up of past experiences) and he did move on Over and over but realized his gut was pushing him closer to Robin. And it wasn’t uncertainty you heard in his voice, it was true emotion and a on the spot response. Almost like a instinctual reaction.
I think you are misdiagnosing a huge part of the argument side. When someone is saying they love someone as is presented here. They aren’t saying that they can choose who they love and therefore can’t choose themself over the person they truly love. They are saying that their feelings go beyond anything theyve ever felt before and because of that they will pursue that other person to the extent that they do simply because after they have had the taste of it that they have had nothing compares. Not even loving themself. Because they know that if there is ever the slightest amount of hope left inside of them that they would rather go down that torturous path because they are trying to go for their ideal possibility.
Nice analysis and SPOT ON. Ted is FIXATED on Robin...because he hasn't found someone who fills his life and so he keeps compensating with a yearning for Robin. When Tracy shows up...it became Robin who?
@@armanimartinez8105 Actually he forgot Robin the moment Tracy entered his life, this was just obsession. He was really describing Tracy who was the love of his life, Robin never even came close. Hell Robin only noticed him after her and Barney split up so no, that’s not true love, that’s called settling.

Exactly. It’s hard to explain it to everyone. They just want you to move on. It’s impossible. Sure I can fake it with someone else. But it’s not ever going to be right or make me happy.
Message in a bottle 36. EXACTLY ! I'm getting good at this... You always knew I was the master of the monologue, the word was created for me. I am trying hard to listen more nowadays, but this subject is sensible and I have to get back to the monologue. Because i get silence on the other side, because the rest of the world believes I am crazy and because I suppose I like talking about you. I keeps you alive, as if i was scared to forget the details like the way you smell, you warmth, the sound of your voice, you expressions, the way your laugh goes higher at the end, the thing you do with your nose, the way you look when you sleep... Monolo.V.e ?
It is not obsession, it is love. Love means wishing happiness for the other person even if it is not including you. Ted met Tracy and married her. But Robin was always the one, he wished to end up with of course, so he hold on to this dream as long as he could. It is true love, a kind of people cannot experience nowadays because they are to arrogant, egocentric or unemotional. Obsession is making the person want you no matter what it costs, even if they do not love you, sticking like glue and harass them, can't live without them and not wanting them to be with another person. Obsession is also a kind of control on the other person. I know what I am talking, my best friend was married for 4 years to a man with obsession. He even locked the doors so she could not leave the apartment and worse... so guys before you write stuff like that, get a proper dictionary and make your research first. It's maybe not the kind of love you believe in/want, but it is still a fact. But tbh if you know the chemical reaction of love, the brain activates the same areas as a drug addict, so a light obsession can be reasoned scientifically ^^
Actually Tracy was the one because the moment she entered his life, he never looked at Robin again, he essentially forgot her. If Tracy had survived, they would have grown old together and endured everything together. Robin was just a replacement afterwards because he was lonely, sad and nostalgic, it’s that simple.
ted mosby is the reason I still think love is possible in this generation. I did what he did and I bought a blue French horn off ebay (there's none to steal around where I live haha 😂) and went to my crush's house told him how I felt and now we're together we watch how I met your mother together and are huge fans so he knew what I was tryna do when I turned up with it lol
What Teddy West Side is talking about here is desire, mixed with internalized wish fulfillment. When you dedicate to someone else's happiness at your own expense you are no longer talking about love. This is someone justifying what he's doing because otherwise he feels like it's all wasted time. That's just childish. Loving someone you are no longer with but not ruining your ability to be happy with someone else because of a 1 percent chance that they might love you on some level is what teenagers do. Any decent human being wouldn't string you along and let you keep doing everything for them if they know there is no way they are ever going to return those feelings. That literally is playing games with someone's head. And I have a hard time believing that if you ever got that person you'd be happy with the reality of what your day to day life would be like. Ted and Robin would never have worked unless Ted allowed himself to become someone he was not. Shit Robin even told Barney, BARNEY, "if I change too many things about you, you won't be the person I fell in love with anymore." She told Ted the same thing basically when she said where she and he would be in five years would not be in relationship. The problem is Ted's stalker like persistence refused to see this. He was never in love with the real Robin, because the real Robin was the person who did nothing but continually cause him emotional distress.
Robin had loved him deep down. She still needed to get her career down the road. Both Ted and Robin were not ready to settle down and they wanted different things. She just didn't know what she wanted. She was dumped and left at the altar several times. She married a man she thought she was madly in love with and yet he never completely grew up even after they got married so they had to divorce only three years later and go their separate ways. She wasn't ready to get into any more relationships after that or before that. She always had issues with intimacy and vulnerability since her father never provided her with reassurance or intimacy like a father-daughter pairing should have so she viewed men as her equals, and never someone she wanted to get close to or be wife/mother to them for the rest of her life. She's not good at opening up to guys she was dating. She needed time to figure herself out yet it never meant she loved Ted any less. Robin has never been "touchy feely" or sentimental. She was raised as a boy and taught to bottle her emotions and be independent like a man. She's not good at being in touch with her feminine side. It's not her fault. Ted for her part loved her, unconditionally and forever and never gave up on her. Both Ted and Robin had to find themselves and figure out what they both wanted. They have chemistry and they're in love but the timing was always wrong; either Robin wasn't ready when Ted wanted to settle down or when Robin WAS ready, Ted was already in another relationship, so Robin had to move on to someone else as well. By the time Robin was truly ready, Ted had let her go. He just wanted her to be happy even if it'll never be with him. He wasn't going to ruin her wedding day no matter how much he loved her. That was true love. Timing finally brought them back together after they both got what they wanted out of life: Ted got a beautiful family of his own with two wonderful children, and Robin got the career of her dreams. They were finally ready to be together, this time, FOREVER.
You can’t define love. Ted followed his gut. He moved on. Had one night stands and wasn’t happy. Being friends with Robin made him happy and he felt that connection. He followed his gut from all he learned throughout the 9 seasons Listening to your gut is listening to logic and emotion and god damn it love is between 2 people not other ones who judge or look down on the actions of each Participant. If you love someone you will always love them and that’s how you know it’s true love. Time heals all and time will tell.
I believe the scene is supposed to challenge what love is and touches on that. HIMYM is partly based on "Love in Time of Cholera". Love is great but is also sickness. In the end, both Robin and Ted had to let each other go to be able to find themselves again. A simple twist of Fate.
While this is a beautiful clip, and I agree, if you love someone you fight for them, sometimes if you love someone, as much as it hurts, you have to give up and let them move on and be happy. If the love goes both ways, the love he has, they will find a way back. Often letting them go is not giving up. This is exactly why people drive themselves to insanity during a breakup. Because of scenes like this. If you love them and want them to be happy, you gotta let them go. For you and them. Otherwise, it becomes about you, and while you might not intend it, it becomes selfish. Don’t get suckered in by scripted tv and movies. You also don’t want to end up with a restraining order lol.

now I know what love is and I am so fucking angry that I didn't know what it was 3 years ago
I love you Jessica
Exactly. It’s hard to explain it to everyone. They just want you to move on. It’s impossible. Sure I can fake it with someone else. But it’s not ever going to be right or make me happy.
This is my with my best friend/crush I love and wouldn't leave him for the world
I'VE BEEN LOOKING ALL OVER FOR THIS CUZ I HEAR THEM FROM VIDEO EDITS LMAO
Thank You, Ted MOsby!!! i lost my GF..but i LOVE HER...
Best speech in the entire series
"Love has its limits." -Greys Anatomy #reallife #protectyourself
at the end we are all ted mosby
You'd better hope not.
Almost forgot to watch this today
And then I realised that I’m a truly in love with him
Came here from Love-sadkid's song "tell me"
ted mosby is the reason I still think love is possible in this generation. I did what he did and I bought a blue French horn off ebay (there's none to steal around where I live haha 😂) and went to my crush's house told him how I felt and now we're together we watch how I met your mother together and are huge fans so he knew what I was tryna do when I turned up with it lol
Stefnee kirby that's dedication! So glad Ted has helped you find happiness. :)
+Ben Suchwow (bls1999) thank you :)
I love my crush
Someone should put this in a song
He followed his gut from all he learned throughout the 9 seasons
Listening to your gut is listening to logic and emotion and god damn it love is between 2 people not other ones who judge or look down on the actions of each Participant.
You also don’t want to end up with a restraining order lol.
i wish this was true i love this girl so much and it been 2 weeks and she has told me she stop loving me and told me to move on /: i kept trying and trying but everytime i just fail and end up sad and lonely..
relate to that too
according to the speech then it wasn't true love on the girls end.
kev ortiz I lost a girl so many times we've been dating 3 years now but now everything I fought for was worth it. now we are having a kid and getting married. don't give up. love is worth fighting for. she's the happiest she's ever been with me and so I am.
retro Native Hey man congrats!
Have you ever felt sad or lonely
I have this friend who's my ex and I've told him I still like him...multiple times and he told me that I shouldn't be with him and to find someone better and I told him I refuse to give up on him I don't know what to do....I think I might actually be in love with him

How can people watch this and then say that he shouldn’t have ended up with Robin?
'Cause what he's describing is obsession not love
@@alicenestpasmonprenom5784 same thing
Until she uses you over and over for six years to boost her ego and allow you to float her along, emotionally, from one transition to another. I fucking love you Raquel, and I’ve been here trying each time since we were 20/23. Yet each time you just fucking crush me and I can’t seem to get it through my head that you don’t care about me. That to you I am nothing but a puppy you can pick up when your sad, and toss away when you feel better and after the latest guy. We were engaged for a reason. I’m a very intelligent person, but I am just like Forest Gump with you being Jenny. I fucking hate it, but I can’t fucking change it because at the end of the fucking day. I just want you to be happy.
Honestly this comes more as obsession for me
came here from ig edits
Agree. Unless the other person is toxic, selfish
I recommend to listen to Sue Johnson. She explains why this idea of love is wrong.
Has anyone seen the lofi edit of thia
Have you found it? Trying to look for it
