Ted could be whiny and a major d-bag, but that's good writing and great acting. Everyone has their flaws and even if you're great friends with someone, sometimes you just want to give them a shake and tell them off. What's even better is that these flaws tended to come out in certain aspects of his life, rather than dominating his personality, whether it be who he's with or what he's doing (hanging out with "high brow" crowds or lecturing others on things he's interested in). And when these aspects came out, his friends either supported him (when he was feeling down) or let him have it (when he was full of himself), just as friends should. A good friend keeps you grounded, building you up when you're down or knocking you down a peg when your head gets a bit inflated. He is a far superior character to the absolute bile that modern media spews out.
honestly, having a bit of culture does not make you a douche, lots of times he was, but sometimes he was unjustly dragged down by his friends. Him reciting the divine comedy in italian is really cool, not douchey

In a culture where ignorance is lauded and having no idea about anything is normal Ted is in fact considered a douche. Anywhere else on the planet he'd be an educated guy that people would look up to and be happy to be associated with.
Even though I really can't stand Ted, I feel about his friends making jokes about him whenever he tried to be more cultural. On the other side, Ted often had the bad habit of correcting other people in an arrogant way. And even when he wasn't in the right, like when he pronounced “chameleon" wrong, he often didn’t want to accept it at first. Even though, as I said, I felt sorry for him in this particular episode, his friends know him better and have to put up with his smartass antics more often. The fact that they made fun of him when he wanted to teach them some culture, even if he had good intentions , is therefore kinda understandable. Overall I could never be friends with someone like Ted, honestly. He's still way to annoying and hypocritical. Especially when it comes to women. Robin would be cool to hang out with but I can’t understand why anyone would want to be in a serious relationship with her. Way to exhausting. Lily is a 50/50. When she's not selfish at times, she's an absolute 10/10 as a wife. Both Barney and Marshall are awesome tho. Marshall is a good guy, unlike Barney, but Barney is the best friend you could ever hope for. If he's your friend, he's your *friend* he'll have your back 100% (unless it's a fight. That point goes to Marshall tho). Barney can give you headaches but he will also make sure your time together will be LEGENDARY.
Its important to note that Ted is an incredibly unreliable narrator who lies, distorts, and purposely misremembers some stuff. He also mentions here and there how he haaaaates his younger self's behavior a lot. It is very reasonable to watch the show with the idea that he is embellishing at least some of his bad traits.
Every time I saw Ted, I had the same thought I had every time Gilligan showed up on "Gilligan's Island," i.e., "why don't they just kill him, already?"
