The Perfect Boss: Dr. Axel Zein at TEDxStuttgart

- Axel Zein promotes a new way we manage businesses today: think of business as a sport. In sports, the team is decisive; the team with the best players usually wins. And sports are fun. So what qualifies a manager to be the perfect coach for his team?
Who is doing the work in a normal company? It is not the CEO, not the managers but the engineers, the guys on the shop floor and the sales reps. They are the players on the ield. A manager is supposed to be their coach. But we are not educated to be coaches. During our careers we usually encounter a couple of really bad bosses, many mediocre managers and only a few outstanding ones.

My very best speach heard in my life saying simply thank you…. Mutumesc din nuertingen
Felicitari Axel! Toata lumea e mandra de tine!
I'm a factory worker who just works on the manufacturing lines like most people at work but I take my job seriously even if it is just a job that they can replace me the next day if I got fired or I just quit... I'm just your typical average low class working citizen but I'm still grateful to have a job in the first place and to be around new people who I want to know that they can rely on me 95% of the time.
I work over 260 days and rarely miss a day....
Even with my good attendance I'm still expendable to the company...
The only thing I can do in return is just give compliments to my boss, my supervisor, my factory general manager and lastly are the company owners.
Little things like a compliment of gratitude goes a long way.
This was a great find. If you are a manager, you need to take notes on this video and watch it once a week.
Why you should motivate?
You do not think they are?.. 😉
Every manager should watch this every monday morning!!!
Agreed
Whoa! I'm doing something right then cause I'm listening right now on a Monday morning! On 5.6.2024 @ 1130am!
One of the rare excellent nuggets you find out there. Definite watch for leaders and generally too
Beautiful TED, added it to my Fav. List. So much truth, delivered with so much grace, thank you very much.
I have no clue, how this video has only 5,200 likes after 6 years, it deserves so much more.
This video is really enlightening to new managers / just managers in general.
3 years later and this video now has over 10,000 likes!
Still very enlightening, this video deserves way more attention than it gets.
Actually a TED speaker that actually makes sense instead of just a dull lecture.
Dr Axel so pleased to have found this talk this morning, I am starting a role as an SVP- and your words ring so true. I can't wait to see how I best can serve and inspire my team.
Herr Dr. Zein. Ganz herzlichen Dank. Dr. Bittner
Great, very interesting lesson!!! I am pleased to see that there has been a sea change in the preparation of leaders and their teams. Initially only the leader was rewarded for achieving the budget, while the team had to be content with compliments. The order was that victories belonged to the leader and not to the team. In the team there was no distinction between those who had given their all and those who remained on the bench. All the teams were infested with people who were recommended and therefore did what they wanted. The annual budgets (in my case the sale of banking products) were really difficult so there was also the frustration of not being able to do it. Finally, petty leaders were almost always responsible for managing a group of people with the usual favoritism. Greetings, Francesca.
Hands down the best intro to being a manager I’ve found. This guy gets it.
Best speech. So many things we can learn from his speech as a leader. A good reminder. Such an inspiration!
When I started my company I decided that my driving principle would not be customers first it would be employees first. I realized that if I prioritized my employees over my customers it would have a much more direct impact on the success of my company. Elevation by proxy is what I set out to achieve. So far so good!
Absolutely perfect performance, and very truly. Thank you!
This was so inspirational. The best TED talk in my opinion. Wow!
The need for constant development rings so true with me. I try to do this so often simply so I can share what I know what others to hopefully inspire them to do the same. Pay it forward!
What an awesome speech. Kissing up, kicking down, that's the regular 9 to 5 job. That's why network marketing is so powerful because you learn that together everyone achieves more (TEAM).
This is so far one of the best TEDD I watched.
Agreed!!
Toller Vortrag Herr Dr. Zein !
Great presentation on leadership. I particularly enjoyed your discussion of the transition from individual contributor to manager. A lot of people miss the point n never really get. Simon Sinek talks of the manager taking care of people in their charge rather than being in charge. Thoroughly inspiring
You
Dr.Axel,I like the way you are explained and compared the business with sports are highly appreciated.
That was truly inspirational remarkably articulate. I am going to listen to this wise talk every week. What a great find
I loved the contents and research of Dr. Axel Zein. Marvelous learning experience via this video. For a sustainable quality of any organization and leader there must be a source of Inspiration and Dr. Zein has showed very beautifully. Bravo..... from Kuwait.
Thank you so much for these free training. You are infact impacting lives.
This is a great watch for any leaders looking to get the best from their team!
Five years later, Dr. Zein's topic and main points are more applicable today than ever. Thought leadership has risen as a prominent topic and the acceptance of failure is so important for future creativity and innovation. Concepts articulated and comparisons to sports are also very relevant: High Performance Culture, Individual performers that are visible to all, true training & learning should be continuous, true leaders and celebrations!
Amazing speech! If you ever decide to write a book, I'll be your first buyer!
Finally, someone who delivered with success my thoughts and beliefs about this topic. Well done!
People need to watch this video!
Absolutely awesome...what a great analogy with sports..excellent presentation skills...soft and gentle yet effective...thoroughly impressed with the talk...thanks Dr. Alex
Hey Dr. Axel, thanks for sharing this good content with all. I am a changed person and blessed to listen to it as I hope to one day be a Manager. Because the speech is informative and inspiring.
Thank you - what an informative and inspiring talk! Your description positively correlates with building a collaborative culture.
Great talk Alex! I agree with your principles too and would love to see more organisations preparing their managers for management before promoting them (or throwing them in at the deep end). I believe that managers are the critical variable in the success of a business - so important to get this right. Well done.
I always gave 100% to all my jobs in communications for tv, high school teaching and business jobs, but had some bosses with horrible behavior. Then I got to be a boss for a day running the LSAT and I realized the three ingredients to being an amazing boss and why I was so successful that day: 1) stay humble, 2) let everyone below you shine and 3) rely on God all day to help you stay wise, knowledgeable and put everyone else first. 🤗 I was only hired for that day, but some day I know I will be able to be a boss and do these 3 things daily.
I watch this all the time. Never gets old. Fantastic presentation.
Thanks for your great points about the danger of becoming a bad boss and the transition from a individual contributor to a Manager or Leader of people. The point about it being tough to grow others by trying to rely on titles or authority.
This is absolutely amazing and helpful for those who wants to change and make this world better
Beautiful homage to leadership that should be the foundation of effective management
Perfectly delivered! the talk was very inspiring, clear and at the point. The analogy is amazing to follow, your presentation was very elegant. You considered the business , the manager, the team and the individual needs, expectations , focus, rewards and humane and effective leadership.
Thank you,
LOVED IT!! esp in the part "people will follow you through thick and thin if you inspire them, if you do something great, if you convince them, or if you care about them. but they would not do it just because you are the CEO" because it portrays my act towards my leader :D
simple but very true, great talk
This is the best piece ever made on manager's on RUclips. I will get promoted to a manager role next year and this video has the perfect recipe to be the manager with perfection. Thanks.
Ko kolj
Very motivating and great delivery of the main concepts of such an exciting topic!
after years of working i had to watch this becasue of my boss crying and running away
Job, fear, team, manager, trainig, the players on the field, sports.... and our high performance culture! But what mostly impressed me were your English and body language, which create a perfect "captatio benevolentiae" for our society. Hut ab! O Captain! My captain!...
being a leader is indeed about growing others. --> always very relevant
This was well said. I'm so glad I found this. I wish my bosses can take note of your video, but I don't see it happening. That's why, I know its my turn to become a great leader someday with my own company built from the ground up
This was brilliant and inspirational! One of the best ted talks ever!
Excellent advice. I particularly like the focus you given to developing yourself. 👏
It is a very good and concluding presentation Mr. Zein. I understood a lot of things I felt, but was not able to express before. The analogy to sports is self explaining.
Hi from Ireland. Very enjoyable, thanks.
very motivating, you have the characteristics of a leader
if i didn't add comment on this... man, im missing something. what a thought and simple explanation.
Every manager should watch this every night before going to sleep!
Thank you for the Ted and Dr Zein
I wish my last 2 bosses/managers would watch this and take some notes 🙏
very inspiring video, and teach me how to be a good leader! thanks for TEDx...
Real example, great speech.thank you
Muito bom, excelente palestra!
Compelling information and delivery, Dr. Zein. 👏👏👏
What I was expecting from this title of talk is leadership. The Perfect Boss.
Brilliant analogies - great presentation!
Absolutely agree....many organizations do not realize the cost of employee disengagement.... authority is fear based. Putting your employees needs first, will develop a highly engaged productive workforce....win/win .... good for the employee and good for business.
Debbie Ruston Agree!
Perfect presentation!
great talk with great language ,,, respect
Interesting informative talk. Thank you, bless you. All your dreams come true.
This was amazing and in the world of management is down right life changing!
Thanks for the nice words
Can you help me please 🙈🙈
Very simple question
Can I ask you sir ?
I sent this to my manager to save our team 35 people resigned in 18 months. No feedback.
this is infact all brilliantly put together thanks
Brilliant perspective, adroitly delivered
You hav helped me to becom the best manager one day
Such an inspirational speech!
Beautiful talk!
wow what a great video on how to be a perfect Manager love it !
Good job. Wonderful Ted talk!
Amazing, already given some pretty good advice to implement, 🙏🏽 thanks
This is great stuff...sadly the only advice I was given when I was appointed ( or rather shoved into a manager's role since they fired my line manager) as a manager as " Learn how to juggle" - everyone knows that recipe of constant failure.
Alex Ferguson said "..the player that I always choose first time on the team sheet is Denis Irwin, not the best or the most talented player but the most dependable and consistent when ever he plays".
13:40 High performance culture, extreme visibility of individual performance, obsession with training, the TRUE (best) leader and celebration.
Thanks for summarising.
Well said, Dr. Zein. Even we believe that great managers are those who create a purpose and inspire people to work. Unfortunately, two-thirds of the managers don't do this and for them motivating employees is only about appraisals. Is there any way this can be changed?
Superb video. I would like to ask Dr Axel, how do you motivate employees when company is not doing well and when employees are working in remote site.
By the manager himself working harder than others. You can't demand respect or attention unless you command it.
If you as manager might not even be a good Programmer, but take that extra effort of trying to step in your team's shoes, by atleast starting to learn to code you yourself will realise ways to motivate your team because now you are in their shoes.
Thanks for your summary research
Great talk! The sports analogy is spot on! And It hits home for us as a leadership development team for a large multinational mining company. We'd love to use your video as part of some of our leadership training. Is that possible?
Great and inspiring talk!! Loved it!
A highly recommended listen!
My week starts on Wednesday- pro tip- no case of the mondays!🤙🏝
Superb!!!!!
Great video. Thank you.
Nailed it!
Great contents, I couldn't agree more with the contents.
Just love it!
Very helpful.
Is just amazing. Thanks
Gracias por compartir,me gustó mucho.voy a trabajar en lo qué me esté fallando
Bravo Bravo Bravo
Good presentation, my boss needs to watch this video (organic grocery store).
Great talk....
Loved it!!!
If only 20% of all managers would think and act like you our world would be a much happier place! Not to mention productivity, job satisfaction etc. People in general would love to go to work if they reported to the type of manager you describe.
I suggest you develop a course and teach it a business schools!
@Anita Morrow I totally agree. He should make a course, I would so take it.
Yes, And I had to prep for many days and hours before the day, I was a boss (perhaps even years to be able to use all the education, skills and experienced gained form previous years).
Superb talk 👍
This is awesome ...
