I am one of those guys who believes that every relationship is transactional since transaction does not involve just finances. It can be physical attractiveness, self confidence, prowess in bed, family pedigree, physical strength, intelligence, oratorical skill etc. Even your description of your brother’s marriage is transactional, she helped him get his degree and than he had a more lucrative career which helped her. Completely agree with this assessment. Unfortunately it's not just in matters of the heart with Thai women, it's in all interactions with the Thai population. The tourist traps are the worst places. But even in the supposedly remote areas of the country, a foreigner is seen as an entity to exploit/scam/cheat. I've been to some of the remotest locations in Thailand and I can tell you with absolute certainty the dual pricing/over charging/propensity to cheat is everywhere. With the push for increased tourist arrivals into Thailand, it's only going to get worse.

On one hand, there’s a lot of us who have been expats for years and understand the nuances and pragmatism of Asia. For us, this topic is a non-issue - it’s a win-win for both men + women. In SE Asia, people tend to look the other way - wives who have an idea that their husbands are playing around, parents whose daughters send them money. I teach at a pattaya school. A few of the foreign teachers that i work with have Thai wives. Many of my students have foreign father's in seemingly happy marriages. I disagree with love being impossible to find in Thailand, i think it depends where you look and the type of man you are. You aren't going to turn a freelancer into a loving wife. You could turn a professional woman into a loving wife. People in long lasting, loving relationships don't broadcast their happy relationship, those who got screwed do.(Bad news travels fast)
Also, i agree that the vast majority of women you meet in here aren't wife material-but so are the vast majority of women everywhere else. - here women are easy to find, and thus getting screwed is even easier, hence the horror stories. You need to be a good, strong, smart(most men have no idea how to manage a women or a relationship) man in order to eliminate the 90% of aweful women you will meet here.

In my personal experience, what happened in Thailand stays there. I know a few guys who attempted to go the serious route but dropped the women once they started getting fleeced. The people I know who have been with a Thai woman have been married for decades. It was possible to find love 20 years ago, but it's gotten more cynical year by year after that. A Thai masseuse once told me face to face: Farang good for money, Thai men good for love.
The irony is that most thai men are broke and depend on a woman to carry them!!! Go figure 🤔

Relationships of financial interests or relationships of quid pro quo where finances or favours or powers are exchanged, happens ALL OVER the planet.
Middle East, South America, Central America, Europe, ASIA, regions of Norway, Finland, and so on. Australia, Africa... these and others all have this.
There are countries with Apps which are exclusively for Sugar Daddy and Sugar Baby relationships.
