    My back has been locking up for around 7 years. Very frustrating and debilitating. I’m only 41.
    I’m otherwise physically fit and play football twice a week and gym everyday other day. Good info in this video and generally good advice. Not necessarily anything I don’t already know but I’m sure it will definitely help others out.
    Although, saying that, you speak about the threat response. This has got me thinking overtime. I’m really restricted in certain movements and when I push myself to the limits that’s when I seem to lock up. My comfort zone is quite narrow as I have super tight hamstrings, weak glutes, stiff hips and general all round stiffness. I’m always trying to push myself but what I do is go above my limits way too quickly.
    I will definitely implement the things you speak about further into this video with increasing range of motion very subtlety. Thank you 🙏

      Sorry to hear that and I hope it improves for you very soon! Stiffness and tightness definitely increases the threat respond as the "safe" zone becomes more limited.

      You most likely have a disc injury. Have you had any MRI imaging done?

    Thank you Will. I am sitting here, watching this in the middle of the night because I pulled a muscle in my back and have been in severe pain, trying to gently get back to being able to move again. I have locked up 3 times in the last 8 months and would love to put a stop to this. Your advice is very much appreciated.

    What does it mean if your back locks up whilst sitting and you can't stand up?

    Good video, I have an injury around L3, not disk but tendons probably. The cause was being overweight and too enthusiastic doing W raises putting too much stress on that area without working upto it. Fight or Flight response kicked in 30mins after I left the gym and laid me up for 3 days. This is my first day very gingerly walking around, there is nothing worse.

    Hello Will. I’ve just come across this video and found it very interesting. I have excruciating back pain following on from a hip replacement but they reassure me all is well with the implant. My back just feels permanently locked and it stops me from walking. I’ll try what you have discussed in this video. Thank you for the information.

    Would be helpful if you had a quick short video demonstration for what to do when your back locks up and you can't move. I made it to the floor but I don't know what to do.

    My problem is this happens to me when i try to sleep 😥 I even do yoga but now i cant handle a basic pillow 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

    I've had degenerative disc disease and facet arthritis for 10 years but my back didn't start locking up all day since I injured my back 2 years ago with bulges at L4-L5. Is pushing the limits still safe with the bulges?

      Yup. That will do it. 95% of back “lock ups” or “throwing out back” is caused by disc injuries.

      @@gibby35412I’ve spent thousands of dollars on seeing a McKenzie specialist and McGill Master Clinician. Also had a couple of video calls with Brian Carroll. Read Back Mechanic, Gift of Injury, and Treating your own back. None of these has helped me. I hope you have better luck. For me as I age, the pain and symptoms only get worse no matter the rehab I do. I’ve tried everything but surgery and stem cell. It’s a horrible way to live. I hope you have better luck than I did.

    what is not addresssed (which is far more common) is locking up WHILE HAVING MULTIPLE DISC BULGES. I don't get it. Don't most people over 50 have multiple bulges???

    Some times my genetilia muscle stiffens up n gets locked up looking like a big tree limb but without any leaves.
