Fixing a gravel road

- Using a Cat d4c dozer to dig drainage ditches, fill pot holes, and widen a road. Then tailgating stone out of a 1987 f800 dump truck to re-surface the road with a layer of #3, and #2 stone. Using a ford tractor so spread some stone.
So much nostalgia watching your older videos. It's awesome to see how far you've come and hopefully keep growing.
Your videos are very addictive, because it's real jobs, real work, and I have to say I have never seen someone use a dump truck so effectively to dump gravel, forward backward and in circles both way, you are a awesome worker using old but well maintained equipment...fascinating to watch. TALENT!!!
Andrew, HOLY crap when all the pins fell apart all at the same time, and a video of all that would of been great, and you putting it all back together..the road work, was amazing as always, I so admire the detail you see in a project like that before you get to work on it and to see what it looks like at the end . Thank you for sharing. Loves your jobs.

I live in a farming community in Missouri. I always wondered why the gravel roads were in such poor shape. We only have graders to fix the roads. Now I know why the hills always have gullies that go down the tire tracks. Great work!

You do a great job! I’ve worn out one of those 864/t200 skid loaders, nice machine. They do great with a land-planer and roller attachment also. Your ability to spread rock with that old girl not to mention a MANUELLL tailgate is very impressive! I used to do work like this and miss working for GOOD people and not the state or hundreds of millions of dollar projects. There’s gonna be all kinds of keyboard professionals here but none of them have what you have

Definitely says good things about your work when one job turns into 3 or 4. The big dump truck will definitely come in handy for big gravel jobs like this.
Andrew, you have just GOT to buy a roller compactor. One of these will make almost any road work you do that much more stable, and better looking too.
Generally, you've done a pretty good job here. You're a hard working man, I'll give you that, well done!
Once he owns a roller he needs to get it to job which is trailer time and then one would really need to hire a full time employee so that 2 trucks and trailers can go out to the job and now he has a whole new set of trials and tribulations to consider.I see Andrew as a KISS guy keep it simple stupid but, Lord knows he could handle it as his reputation has increased and I'm sure he could keep someone busy. Only time will tell
Equipment breaks and you repair it. Employees that are reliable, honest, and consistently hardworking in this type of business are really difficult to find and keep.
A roller is pretty unnecessary for most of his jobs. If he did absolutely need something to compact small roads/ driveways like these then he can get a weighted compactor drum for his tractor to pull around. Moving all of his equipment has already got to be a nightmare, I can't imagine adding something so specific to the mix...
but then he wouldn't have to fix the driveway years later.

With so little grade, crowning works great but its good to install rolling dips to shed water wherever possible. We usually come back and install; ~3" of +3 crushed rock. People driving on wet native material is what starts the whole thing again. The bobcat really cleans the cut bank up nicely. Great work Andrew!

That looks pretty darn good. I have driveway problems. It's basically the lower than the surrounding ground. Water runs down it like a river during rains. I just fix the potholes that form, but after watching this am finally inspired to get some drainage ditches cut and raise the drive up a smidge. Thanks for the inspiration Andrew!

Always enjoy reading the comments your fans make - mostly smart and observant folks who understand what is required to do a tough, hard job. We all have been inconvenienced by road construction and repair while on vacation or similar fun times but did not appreciate what was really going on or understand all the procedures, materials and techniques employed. Just another reason for enjoying and learning from Andrew's videos.
Some people still don't see the need of having a crown in the road. Good thing you do, Bravo Andrew!

Crowns work on paved roads. Ruts will always redirect water with or without a crown .
@@Canvideo My driveway is a bit over 1/4 mile and believe me, you need a crown and ditches on each side. Mine is hilly as well. I'm also adding gravel and fixing after heavy rains. Luckily I have some equipment, or it would cost me a fortune. The last big storm last summer washed out a 6 foot deep ditch directly in front of my low water concrete bridge, it was like a raging river all that day. I hate my driveway.
Most gravel roads do not have a rock base and layers of the right gravel topping. After winter, the ground will thaw and the roads get soft. People have a habit of driving in the rut rather than driving the high sides. When the road sets up and dries the ruts almost always break up the crown and form water channels when it rains, washing away the topping. If you have equipment, you will probably find that the less you disturb the topping, the less will wash away when it rains, so filling in the ruts with proper road gravel and packing it down works best for me.
I always enjoy your great vids, and learn something. I need to fix my driveway, and this vid was very educational. The final drone footage really showed how you sloped the road, and that's what I needed to learn! Thankyou, and best of luck!

Then you can sell the extra fish you catch for a profit, which you can use to buy a bigger boat. And with the proceeds from the bigger boat, you could buy several more big boats and start operating a whole fleet of fishing boats. And then instead of selling your fish to a middleman, you can open your own cannery. Then you can control the entire catch, processing, and distribution. From there you can move to New York or Hong Kong, expanding your operations around the globe.”
The fisherman thought about this for a moment and then asked how long it would take. “About 20 years.” the businessman replied.
“And then what?” asked the fisherman.
The businessman laughed. “That’s the best part. At just the right time, you can announce an IPO, sell your stock to the public, and make millions. You’ll be rich!”

Back when I paid $50mo 4 TV I couldn't watch tractor work Hot Tenting funny blond attorneys with big blocks visit forums watch a man build an off grid cabin in Ontario w/his dog or drool over DIY Maple Syrup sourdough bacon cheese sandwiches or listen to school bus camper nomads. Now the *TV is mostly never on.*
16:13 and 16:56 you gotta have a washer or a bushing in between the cotter pin and that short pipe or the action of the bed will saw through your cotter pin like nothing.

I know it's a year and half later, but the pins for the dump hinge near the hoist need a washer before using the cotter pin. The cotter pin will wear out in short time allowing it to move.
The road came out great Andrew, as expected from you. Gotta get that tail gate done bud, maybe the next rainy day where as you cant work outside? If the Ford goes down that would truly suck.Keep the videos coming, looking forward to seeing the "bridge project" soon!Dave

I recently put new stone on my drive. It’s been here for 13 years and was down into the clay. I had potholes and muck during the winter.
The truck driver started out great and was spreading fine until he lifted the bed too high and the stone came pouring over the tailgate and left about a 3’ high pile of stone for about 30’ or so. My drive is about 400 yards long. Had he not messed up one load would have been good but he ran short. I wasn’t sure there would be enough in that pile to reach the end. I got another load and started working on moving the huge pile.
I’m glad though I got 2 loads. It’s about 2”deep throughout and in some spots it’s about 4”. I’m hoping it’ll pack because my wife and daughters cars get pulled side to side because they’re so small. It doesn’t affect my truck any.

The job that keeps on giving. I really don't guess there is a permanent fix but what you did they should get some miles out of. Almost like feeling sorry for them and giving a bit more bang for the buck. I get a little queasy when you are in nascar mode and the top of the dump truck tips a good bit. A hard roll would pretty much make scrap iron out of the dump truck should it ever happen. I'll pray it never does. I think if the country went into a depression, you have so many talents to draw from, that you wouldn't notice it. I guess this is as good a place to get out of this conversation... Thank you for sharing this fine piece of work!!

Excellent video. The narration and explanations really add value over just a video with music. The crown and ditches will make that road last a lot longer. Not sure how it was initally built but it didn't appear water drainage was considered. The residents there are really going to be happy with their road now.

That driveway has been let go too long. Nice job spreading that stone. That is not as easy as it looks. Comes with experience.More interesting than watching some TVshows.
Ever considered buying a roller? You seem to get a number of jobs that would benefit from one.
Maybe, they are expensive.
You could probably get one at Ritchie Brothers for a pretty good deal.
Pick up one for behind your dozer.
Take old loader tires fill half with concrete and put chain through top half of them hook the chains to the f800 and do a few passes the wider the road the more loader tires you use & you can stack the tires for more weight to -you can also daisy chain the tires together to create a more uniform compression-give it a shot Andrew cheap and super effective compared to the cost of a roller. You won't be disappointed. Your a talented guy & I enjoy your vids.

It's amazing everytime I watch your videos of you redoing a dirt road or driveway I think to myself You remove to much material but when you get done it looks good..lol what do I know I'm a city guy who would love to do that type of work. Got me looking into heavy equipment schools now..

Perhaps when you grow your business you could justify another man with a truck and trailer to transport more machinery, especially a compactor roller for the chippings. But then, perhaps your customers won't accept the extra cost . . .
We should show videos like yours to tenth graders . How to do business! Start small and work hard and honestly. Invest in your self. BRAVO!!!!

Great video. I learned a lot. You always want to hire the guy whose equipment isn’t too nice. Shows a guy who is interested in doing the work efficiently with cost in mind. Beware of the company that shows up in shiny new trucks (chrome lettering) loaded with expensive accessories. This from a homeowner.
that's a weird outlook that doesn't apply to the masses. Perhaps it applies to your personal experience, but some people take pride in their equipment and show it.
