Totally ignoring that Chris von Erich exist and the director saying oh we combined Chris and Mike together they are the same almost it’s just too tragic to explain Chris?!? That is bull shit and insane and disrespectful! They should have made a mini tv series instead of the film
Chris story deserved to be told. Instead of a movie, they should have made a miniseries. Way too much story to be told in a 2 hour movie.

I didn’t understand the director’s motivation either, 4 kids is already confusing enough for a plot, adding one more into the mix wouldn’t have changed it. Do it right and respect them all vs leaving one out.
I couldn't agree more, once I heard Chris wasn't gonna be in it I became very skeptical. Watching the movie, I was very disappointed with how inaccurate it is and completely leaving out Chris were two reasons this movie didn't live up to expectations. Chris' story was in my opinion the most tragic, I doubt if any of the other brothers were still alive they wouldve okayed it.
Kerry being 5’7 threw me off the entire movie

@@anthonypowell168 should've been Zack who played Kerry, Jeremy Alan White who played Chris (who also should've been in the movie to begin with) and someone else entirely should've played Mike, guy looked nothing like him. Harris Dickinson, guy who played David, was pretty good though so he was a good enough casting.

Yeah, I thought the same thing about the actor who played Kerry Von Erich. I thought, "Kerry Von Erich looks more like a movie star than this actor." Usually they make the person in real life look better with the actor. They did the other thing this time. They downgraded the real life person.
The awful casting of Kerry aggravates me more than the guy who played Ric Flair. The guy who played Kerry is a little runt when Kerry was an absolute horse!!

I agree with Missy Hyatt. I felt bad for any actor that had to play Kerry Von Erich. The man was chilled out of stone! Trying to emulate him is a big ask.

The casting was terrible in most instances in The Iron Claw. It really did throw it off. How anyone could look at Kerry Von Erich and think that actor was the right choice is beyond my comprehension. Made no sense!

World Class' syndication, coupled with their coverage in the Dallas-Ft Worth metro area was the reason why Vince featured the Von Erichs in that first WWF Magazine and also made an offer to buy out Fritz. Fritz was open to an equal merger; but not selling out. World Class was syndicated all over, including Vince's backyard. If Fritz had wanted to tour nationally, he could have drawn big houses. As it was, having one of the boys on St Louis cards drew big houses, and St Louis drew good sized crowds with their average card. Especially Kerry. Kerry was an alternate choice to be the hero of WWF, if Vince's plans had succeeded. Back then, he was agile as a cat, built like an Adonis, and women swooned over him and guys respected his athletic talents. Vince got him after he had lost the foot and was messed up (more than before_ on drugs and he was still a great performer, when he was focused.
Thanks for bringing up the St. Louis stuff. Most people don’t know that Von Erich’s each held the Missouri title.
As soon as the actor who was playing Kerry appeared, my first thought was “That’s not Kerry”. Way too small and no where near buff enough.

I finally watched it last night. It was ok. I was somewhat familiar with the Von Erich family story, but not so much that I noticed a ton of inconsistencies. The worst part was the casting. The acting wasn’t terrible but I couldn’t get past the appearance of the Flair, Kerry & Brody characters. And how do you have a jacked up Zac Efron play Kevin and a scrawny (in comparison), rat-faced dude to play Kerry? My eyes couldn’t adjust anytime both actors were on screen together.
Kevin had a good body in real life, but the movie made Kevin look like Kerry almost, and it was just weird when you know what the real brothers look like

I haven't seen eye to eye with Missy Hyatt on many things these days but I am with her 💯 percent on this. The Iron Claw was terrible. I'm so sick of comment sections featuring the REAL Von Erichs flooded with how great of a movie the Iron Claw was. It wasn't just that it was wildly inaccurate, it was one note, hollow, extremely rushed & that Afterlife reunion with all the dead brothers was Absolute Cheese 😂
When I left the theater I was disappointed but still thought it was an OK movie. But after watching it again on HBO I don't think it's even a good movie anymore.
The kayfabe days cannot be duplicated by Hollywood. Think about that. A shoestring mom & pop operation versus billion-dollar studios with CGI, hindsight and unlimited retakes ... but the Von Erichs still outshone them. Wrestling was in the hands of geniuses.
To be fair Iron Claw was made on a shoestring budget for a movie too but it does show how it’s not easy to find big bulky guys who can act. There is a reason wrestlers drew big salaries, there aren’t many who can wrestle, bulk up and entertain while traveling on the road 24/7.
I wonder what wrestling was on television in Wisconsin in the early 1970's before I was in kindergarten. I remember the Crusher, they have a Crusher Fest in Milwaukee every year.

I thought the boys themselves were miscasted, except for the actor who played David. Zac Efron was good, but he doesn't look one bit like Kevin. The parents were great for what the script asked them to be.

@@dwightyboy5324 I mean the guy who played Mike would have been ok, if Kevin and Kerry had not been so horribly miscast. The guy who played Mike was actually about Mike's real size and looked like a giant upside the other two, who far and away were much better athletes than Mike really was. They could have even put Dave in risers to make him stand out more to Mike's character. Dave was the best cast all of them. He even had a lot of Dave's dry and witty cowboy persona down pat. The physical disparities aside, Kevin was not aloof enough and Kerry was too distant and brooding. When I watched this movie, I found myself wondering if anyone of them watched any of the Von Erich's or WCCW at all, with the exception of the guy who played David. It didn't really seem like it to be honest.

Honestly I think they just wanted Zack Efron and Jeremy Alan White just because they're popular actors and both at least are in good shape (though Jeremy still was nowhere near Kerry) David's actor was the only brother who was properly cast. Id argue Efron could've played Kerry, and Alan White could've played Chris if he was in the movie (idk who would've played Kevin then though) my problem with Mikes actor was he just didn't look like like him at all and didn't sound enough like him. I feel like the miscasting was distracting for those who watched actual WCCW
The problem with documentary type movies is you’ll never get the people right and they make changes to make people not look as bad the guy playing flair was bad but I did like the guy playing Harley race but over all I knew they wouldn’t be able to acutely portray the von Erich’s or there story right
You're right, a movie can never represent the characters perfectly. But I thought their choices were really bad... yeah, it's hard to find actors who look the part, but they could've done a lot better than they did.

That story had no business being told in a 2 hour movie. It needed to be a miniseries on Netflix or HBO.

That movie was terrible. Kerrie looked more like Chris. I thought it was shitty they didn’t put Chris in the movie at first, but after watching that piece of crap movie I think Chris not being in the movie helped his legacy. The is a story to tell there, but they completely missed the mark.
Interesting that people who know the von Erichs hate the movie . Those who didn't know the von Erichs loved the movie.
The best you seem to get from Von Erich fans is "It's OK. I understand why they didn't bother with time lines and put 2 brothers stories into 1. Just not for me."
Every other Von Erich fan points these out as to why they hate it so much.
The director summed it up well. It's such a hard story. "I didn't know if the film could handle another death and so much tradegy."
It would of been better as a 2 or 3 part high budget docu-series thing on Netflix.

@@fingersTitan If it was such a hard story, then why even make the film? That's a cop out from the director. The fact is his production made horrible casting, tonal and narrative choices. If you're going to do something, do it right or don't do it at all. He did it and it sucked.
Any shoot interview story about them is way more interesting and entertaining than The Iron Claw
I used to watch World Class on TV and in person. Have no interest in seeing the movie. The clips alone make it look like crap.
Flair was the worst casting choice.
I think Zach Effron would have been a better Kerry, and guy playing Kerry would have been a better Kevin, but I get it, Kevin was the star of the story, so you want a the bigger name actor for the lead.
Agree. Efron was the lead actor, so he had to play Kevin. If he was offered Kerry, he probably wouldn't have done it. Also agree he would've made a great Kerry.

@@almightyironhead25 The actor they cast to play Kerry was short, small and looked nothing like Kerry (except maybe the hair)... he had none of the charisma of Kerry, and it really took me out of the illusion. I think the poor casting was the worst part of the film.

I asked for my money back at a theater once because the audio cut out halfway through and never came back on.
Only time I wanted my money back was I went to see Jurassic World Dominion (stinker) and some grandfather actually got up & got the theater to turn the bass & volume down because his grandkids were getting scared. Mfer if they are too young to handle it, take them home. God I was POed. Only reason I didn’t throw a fit was it was a matinee and I’m not going to waste my time to get $5 back.

The parent's & David were the only ones cast right. Overall I enjoyed the movie for what it was especially with all the garbage Hollywierd puts out. Nothing can ever tell the real story of the Von Erichs. Truth really is stranger than fiction.
Zac Efron should've played Kerry, but he was the lead, so he played the character around whom the story revolves (Kevin, the only surviving brother). I thought the guy who played Kerry did a good job, but he did lack the height of Kerry as well as the muscle mass, so perhaps they couldn't find and good actor who wanted that role and looked like Kerry in every respect.
I tried watching it about 3 times on HBO and couldn't make it through. It just wasn't entertaining to me.

Awful movie...ridiculously over-acted, ruins the Seuss story with the cliched backstory, Carey just hams it up (pretty much the same thing he did in The Mask, which made it even more boring), music wasn't up to the animated special, no Boris Karloff equivalent... You just can't top Chuck Jones; certainly not with live action.

I love The Mask, but I hate The Grinch - didn't Grinch have a load of Dutch angles like Battlefield Earth? I remember the direction of both making me feel queasy.
@@jeffnettleton3858 For ____________ sake jeff it's not the Godfather, it's a kids movie and they go absolutely nuts for it. The number of Christmas's Ive spent with my little ones huddled next to me with the dog and singing the "wahoo dorey" song are memorable. Now i'm doing it with my twin nieces who go just as crazy for it as well.... laughter.

You know who liked the movie? Kevin Von Erich. He saw an advanced screening of the film, attended the premiere, was interviewed outside the theater, and praised it. Do a RUclips search and see for yourself.

I watched WCCW back in the day and I enjoyed the movie. Fritz WAS mean. He was nice to some people but he was not a likeable guy.

I didn’t know him but I always kind of thought that he was not a nice guy in real life.But I have heard wrestlers say that they loved working for him and others would not work the territory because of him Maybe she always seen his good side when she was around him.
0:25 Blame the Director who Cast him not the actor, Zac Efron should have played KERRY instead of Kevin imo. but its really hard to find actors who can physically embody that type of 80's pro wrestlers. (i would have had Nick Nemith with Lifts portray Ric Flair)
Never watched the movie so I can't say if it was good or bad. However does she hate the movie because it real did suck or does she hate the movie because it really shows the truth about the boys? Having nice memories can cloud judgment. Sometimes the truth can hurt, but you will defend your memories against anything bad especially if they are good memories.
At least they are making wrestling movies

Hey Missy: The film is "BASED on a true story" (they put these words on the screen at the start of the movie) and was made for entertainment purposes - It's not a documentary. I think the Brodie scene going over the match was just a quick way to show audience members who realize pro wrestling is staged entertainment but are not familiar with any backstage stuff how some matches are planned. Some wrestlers just know the finish and go out there and have the heel call the match on the fly. Others plan spots in advance, two examples being Bret Hart and Randy Savage. Steamboat said that when he wrestled Savage at Wrestlemania in what some consider to be the best pro wrestling match of all time, Savage had written out over 70 individual steps (not just spots) as to how the match would play out from beginning to end based on what popped and what didn't in the matches they had leading up to that match.
