I think you nailed it with the 'good tones that are easy to access' comment. That's the appeal for a lot of folks. They need or want to go direct for some reason and just don't want to mess with an entire floor unit. Also: you nailed the I Believe in a Thing Called Love outro solo. 🤘
Through the App, you can put the pedal in Live/Preset mode for the right switch (2 different sounds available) and OD toggle ON/OFF for the left switch, that’s how I use it
You can get two presents. You have to use the app to access it. You can set up 1st switch clean and 2nd switch dirty all setup in app and save the preset. You cant do this manually w/o the app.
Yay to more live footage! Sounds good but yes the UA pedals are weird, I've never bitten because of their strange decisions on interface....if they were MIDI accessible they'd be so much useful.
It seems like having the “preset” switch be a toggle between the channels with a long hold to go back to WYSIWYG mode should be very easy for UA to program. That would solve the two channel amp problem without having to do a format revision
Since you were using the Zendrive, with the Enigmatic set clean, the Enigmatic's Dumble characteristics really don't have much impact IMO. I suppose any clean platform amp/amp model/capture/profile would have provided pretty much the same tone. Sounded like you (as always). And its not just that tone comes from your hands, its also that you are really skilled at dialing in tones that please you - and they pretty consistently sound this way, regardless of what you are playing through.
Seriously, get a Tonex Pedal (can be found from around 350 Euros) and e.g. the Amalgam Audio Two Rock TS-1 DI tone models (18 Euros). They do sound better (without any doubt), and you can save and recall (Dumble like) 150 presets on the device if you need that many, and the display will even tell you what you are actually playing. No need to fumble around with Bluetooth which interferes with at least 2 devices per person in the audience and is an open invitation to hackers. UA is receiving valid criticism about these devices since the first ones came out - I have not seen a single review that did not call out the lack of proper presets and midi in the last two years. Obviously UA is not interested in the customer - time to act accordingly. Somehow companies like Keeley, Flower Pedals, Alexander Pedals (just to name a few) can build pedals half the size that do presets and in most cases even midi properly for the same or less money while having absolutely comparable processing power. Just look at the revised Walrus ACS-1... 6 amps and cabs, custom IR support, an OLED display, full size midi in and out/thru, 128 presets on the device... in standard sized pedal.
Different strokes. I HATE presets and don’t want them anywhere near my amp. Even channel switching feels a bit elaborate to me. If I want different tones, that’s what hands and pickups are for. I really, really want to be able to reach out and just touch a knob to make adjustments on the fly.
@@alanbruckeI tried Tonex One in the loop of an HX Stomp. I spent $100 on Dumble captures, fought my way through the clunky software, and used that setup on 6 or 7 gigs. It sounded significantly worse than HX Stomp on its own, despite all the expense and faffing around. A waste of time and money.
I hated the Tonex. I tried/bought what were considered the best captures. I didn't like any of them. I love all UA's amp pedals, purely for the tones that I get and the way that they feel. Nothing touches them in my opinion. We're all different I guess, but at the end of the day I haven't wanted to switch these pedals out for anything else.
Hi John, I have been using a UAFX Lion in my pedalboard with my delay and reverb after the amp in the chain. Something I do to make it feel more natural to me is take my Lovepedal Amp11 pedal always on right in front of the Lion. I turn my volume down on the guitar and it gets me very dynamic cleans. I feel it also helps the drives going in to the Amp11 and Lion sound less abrupt when engaging them.
Stellar playing mate!! Also another vote for more live playing! Everything I've heard from people demoing this pedal sounds good; do you feel there's a Helix tone that's about the same?
So I was initially put off by the interface limitations of the UA stuff, but have consistently gigged the wet effects for last number of months with the understanding that their use case is WYSIWYG. I’m quite pleased at the moment with a dual ToneX setup, but if I wasn’t, I’d be hopping on this and the Lion to run Wet (Enigmatic)/Dry (Lion). I tend to be set/forget with amp sounds beyond volume adjustments and small EQ tweaks to suit a venue.
Amazing playing! You sparked some ideas. If you have an HX Stomp, (or Helix), you could put the UA in the loop as a block, put HX native distortions before the amp(block) and HX native delay and reverb behind the amp (block). If you like the native cabs in the HX, you could probably disable the cabs in the UA and use HX. I guess it's all possible, depends on how much plumbing you want to do.
I loved your tone on that gig footage. Your criticism is valid though; I might have already bought one if it had at least some way of externally switching or one more preset. I also would be down for more gig footage.
UA makes some great stuff...Fractal just sounds great and eliminates unnecessary complexity though. I think for a pedal board the UA stuff is just top notch
I‘d capture my favourite settings with the tonex and play the profiles with the tonex pedal in the hx stomp’s fx loop. That‘s imho the best sounding combination when it comes to most detailed amp tones in a digital format plus bread&butterFX (plus a little extra stuff) and it doesn‘t really bust the bank. Besides that, great playing as always. 🤘
Totally agree. But I needed more flexibility for playing live, so I bought the big one as I didn‘t like the drives from the hx as much as the captures. Probably I’ll getting a second big tonex for playing drive/boost/preamp captures into different clean captures on the other one. To me some cleans behave better with specific drives than others and vice versa.
Keep doing these live performances coz Im really curious what stuff works well live. What are your favorite HX stomp preset that sound good live too? Just for reference.
Interesting that you used the Enigmatic in the loop of the FM9. I use my UA Lion the same way and it works a treat even it’s a ball ache trying to get it to fit on my board
I think there are times when it comes down to “how does it sound to you as the player?” It sounds pretty decent. I’m with you regarding in ears. Give me an amp or a floor monitor.
sounds great. I don't really know what the dumble sound is, all i know is people with lots of money can afford one and the man that made them was a master amp builder highly respected, but now passed away. I like this format idea, as programming sounds is not my thing. I'd set up an overdrive for power chords and boost for solo's as a preset, clean to edge of break up not a preset.
In ears can be amazing with the right sound guy. It is nearly impossible to do both FOH and IEM at the same time. The attention is split, and the quality of the IEM mix will always take a back seat. I’ve had the Enigmatic a few days and already the Helix, Kemper, Tonex and all other UAFX models pale in comparison.
The Dream and the Ruby still seem best bang for buck, but I think it's becuase I'm so budget minded. I'm holding out for line 6 to do a midway between the Pod express and the go...like a few more knobs and one more stomp. Bit like the NUX cerberus, which is almost excellent. The trident is actually a bit much in some ways and not enough in others for me 😂! Basically way too big but I like the functionality
Great vid! But why do you use that footswitch mode? For what you need i suggest ”overdrive-live/preset” or ”overdrive-preamp boost” That way you get the clean tone (or 2 different ones) and then the overdrive for both of them really handy Tell us how it goes!
There's a video of a couple of guys using this against a Bludotone and a Quad Cortex. I liked the sound of the Quad the most even though it didn't sound like the Enigmatic or the Bludotone.
I'm interested in one of these but am worried about lack of stage volume when using it. I have a very basic setup, just a 15W tube amp into a 2x12, and I've come across many sound guys that don't care to put me in the monitors so I just have to crank my amp. I like this pedal but what if I can't hear myself??
Yeah, the artificial limits UA put in these pedals really out me off them. I don't believe anything is keeping these pedals from storing more presets, UA have just decided to not allow it.
I have the Lion and live,I use the Super bass as a pedal Platform. And I like it better than any other clean platform digital modeler i have had. I think they should have made these pedals slightly bigger and had a possibility to have midi or 2 presets. Maybe that will happen. Their Bluetooth sucks! That is why i am reticent to buy this, as a lot of the real Dumble tweaking is in the APP. I think the main problem with that company, is that they assume that we all have super duper up to date phones and computers and don't factor in that we don't!
Couldn't you set the left switch to turn on the OD ( in the app)? That way you could use the preset and turn on the OD as needed ... I think 🙂, not sure.
Soinds very good. Are you using your fr-12 as on stage cabinet? And do you have your own in ear mix. Our band shares 2 in ear mixes which makes it hard to hear what i want with guitar and its a compromise with the singers!
Bernth posted a short comparing what the audience hears to what he gets in his in-ears. FOH was what you'd expect. In-ears was a very loud click and his guitar with the rest of the band soft and in the background.
Im interested in knowing how the UA amp pedals go into the fender FRFR 10 or 12. Also compared to the FM3 into the fender FRFRs. I have FM3 with the Laney 112 FRFR which is great but is say the UA stuff into fender better? I play at home and am looking for the best amp tone I can get at bedroom volume levels. Its a never ending quest and I'm not there yet... help please!
Regarding not liking it in the ears: what about headphones - Paul Gilbert's been wearing isolation headphones apparently. Start an arms race - who's got the biggest headphones.
Cool to rock out a great Whitney Houston song there! Nice job!!! Do you ever try to mimic a sax more specifically? Seems a Dumble style pedal might really work for this as Santana kind of gets those vibes? It’s in the sustain….
Sorry for asking a rather stupid question but using a pedal such as this one into an effect loop of any kind of a modeler affect the sound of the pedal in use. Or is in this case the fractal is a true bypass? Wouldn’t it be better to use them separately or at least a/b
well live, from audience perspective, I wouldn't be able to tell it from a RAT into a Deluxe, or whatever, something mid heavy and generic. it sounds pretty much exactly like I do, and I run a TS into a Mesa model in the Tonex
In someone else's review (can't remember who) I think they said you could do this but you had to go into the app to set it up. Maybe someone else can confirm.
@@illgottengains1314 With you. Tried a couple of their pedals. Have liked what I've heard but the lack of 'flexibility' has meant they wouldn't work for me. At that price I'd be looking to use it home & away!
If I was running an fm9 or similar I'd just use the modelers amp models. More likely to use this if I was running a board with a few pedals and just wanted to run it as my amp or as one of my drive pedals with cab sim defeated into an amp if I was using one.
Yeah but I am guessing he needed to tap into Vox and Marshall and Fender etc. tones in this context using the FM9 for those characters. That is kind of my issue with the Dumble sound - it seems dialed for a certain kind of setlist. I really want to try the OS module for my Synergy system but I seldom have a set that would just use that tone. My Syn30 only has space for one module and a very disappointing clean channel so I use my Morgan, Friedman, and now Dr. Z more effectively in the module slot.
@@trebleboost7 In your use case probably easiest to just use a dumble style drive pedal for when you want that sound like a j rockett dude. I run BF fenders when using an amp and if I want dumble style pedal either use the helix version with no speaker sim after it as if it's a preamp. If I'm running a modeler, I just use the one in the modeler. I've seen people using our system before but have no personal experience of it. I actually preferred the sound of the helix used in front of a real amp as a board over the analogue pedal so I sold it.
@@justarthur1788yes indeed. I really want to try a character pedal on the clean channel, or as you say I could try my HX Stomp. A bit new to modeling and IRs, Have a Tonex One as well and want to try one of these days that way.
I just run whatever drives etc into uafx pedals and it works great. John presumably wanted the fractal so as not to be depending too much on an unknown new pedal, but in my experience, you wouldn't need it. That said, I agree with the comment around 7 min mark about being restricted in terms of presets. I am so basic that clean/dirt is enough for me. All these pedals, at this price point, should have midi...
Realising now that I should have mentioned that I went the not cheap route of having various UAFX amp sim pedals, thus largely avoiding the preset limitation. eg use dream for clean, woodrow for dirt. great fun
@@WillWorth totally get the gripes with it, but the Fractal is around 6 times the price. It’s also about 10 times the size and weight. With those factors in mind, it’s really not a fair comparison.
I'm sure I'm just a boomer at this point and I don't even gig anymore anyway but I just don't believe there will ever be some gimmicky "amp in a box" that will ever replace my beloved AC30 or any other live amp. There is a reason they've stood the test of time.
John, you use in ears a lot, maybe get yourself a quality pair, maybe one of the ones that are custom fit. Still won’t be as fun but your in ear experience won’t be as annoying and has the ability to sound great
The Fractal FM9 will sound equally good even without the UAFX Dumble Enigmatic Overdrive Special - this may be a good pedal to have but no one needs it actually 🙂, How many Agree?
I don’t “need” any pedal. However, I find them fun and leave it at that. If I only had the pedals I need I’d probably only have 3 total and a much better investment portfolio.
Depends on what you want to hear. The type of sound that the Dumble is noted for is extremely difficult to get… …and one very desirable among rock, blues, electric jazz players.
I’m going to be honest. John. You your playing is outstanding, but you don’t sound your best on this rig. You know it. Did you understand that yes you think it could its purpose on a vox?

Sounds good yo
Sounds very dumbly indeed. All things considered, pretty convincing.
And yes, more live footage please!
Please compare fractal and L6 to the UA.
What a thumbnail!
I'm totally stumped, the FM3 can conjure up some killer Dumble tones, way better than the UA Enigmatic has... Not a criticism, just asking why?
To see if the Enigmatic could cook up something that the Fractal world is missing out on
@@johnnathancordy Got it!
Great live tones! That Fractal unit is absolutely massive though (and insanely expensive). There must be a simpler option with this?
I’m looking forward to his more detailed comparison on this one.
That lead tone screams Carlos Santana in the best way
Buy 2?
super easy, barely an inconvenience
Hmmm- so no external midi control? Pretty much standard on most digital pedals these days… It sounds great but thats a deal breaker for me…
I'm sure I'm just a boomer at this point and I don't even gig anymore anyway but I just don't believe there will ever be some gimmicky "amp in a box" that will ever replace my beloved AC30 or any other live amp. There is a reason they've stood the test of time.
John, you use in ears a lot, maybe get yourself a quality pair, maybe one of the ones that are custom fit. Still won’t be as fun but your in ear experience won’t be as annoying and has the ability to sound great
What did happen to your E string?
Nothing compared to what happened with his G-string
Sound like guitar

I use open back headphones for monitoring live where everyone is wearing in-ears. Nobody cares and it is a lot less hassle then ear buds.
The type of sound that the Dumble is noted for is extremely difficult to get…
…and one very desirable among rock, blues, electric jazz players.
Yeah it would have to nail those Dumble sounds and feel for me to consider it.
You need to use the app, or your reviews and information will be wrong. You don’t want that.

Just use a real amps live and use these type of pedals for recording demos.
John every few days: "I gigged new pedal. We need to talk about".
Stop lying kidder, you had the time of your life.
I’m going to be honest. John. You your playing is outstanding, but you don’t sound your best on this rig. You know it. Did you understand that yes you think it could its purpose on a vox?
