  • When I saw the Special Forces Industry Sentinel, I knew exactly what I was going to build as my first ever Chinese 3rd Party/Gunpla-adjacent plamodel. I love its UC style, and both build variants look awesome. Tune in tomorrow (?) to watch me build it live!

    the Solomon is like a MGEX level of quality, lots of great 3rd party kits but as you correctly pointed out, much of it is pretty hit or miss...I also have the MW genesic gaogaigar, it has also a very hefty metal frame and sometimes the plastic would be very brittle and require glue to stick together, not for beginners for sure

    meanwhile in Japan back in the 80's there are these small and now bankrupt Japanese companies ripping-off Gundam in its heyday and these knock-offs are given the unified nickname "Gangaru", some of the old stock of these kits are still available in shops that sell old retro model kits, warning though the engineering on these kits suck ass even by 80's Bandai standards.

    A lot of the 3rd party kits have mold release laid on pretty thick. So if you paint your kits, you have to commit to making sure every piece is either lightly sanded really well, or to let the pieces soak in some de-greaser for an extended period.

    It saddens me that Bandai has stopped really putting in the effort to create master grades or putting them behind the P-Bandai overpriced color variant wall with limited production runs... A couple of series never even got them. To be fair the HG line is far more popular and they have come a long way in terms of detail and frame design but for me they're just to small and finicky. So yes China is the answer for better or worse. Quality wise most are on par these days. Exceptions exist like the Star Destroyer (Exia) which is an utter piece of shit that continually falls apart, but it still looks cool.

    This is not a 3rd party kit. It's a 1st party, original product. 3rd party I'mplies that an entity that is not the 1st party (l.p. owner) is offering the same or similar enough product that it infringes on the 1st parties product, to the 2nd party. This product though may take some slight inspiration from the Sniper II does not nearly infringe on it.

Most have been a joy. And a good portion of them are far better than what bandai has produced. Give em a shot, and you may be surprised. I'm currently working on the in era Aurora, and so far, it has been an awesome build.

    I've done a couple 3rd party kits, namely In Era's Thunderbolt and Howling Star's Nebula. The former is incredible (and massive) but the latter is... a bit shaky in design. Not *bad* but some decisions are confusing. Like, the entire model is made out of ABS, and the connection pegs can be ridiculously tight. I've noticed that a lot of 3rd party kits are all ABS in general, dunno why that is.

    • @gtf234
      @gtf234 3 месяца назад

      ABS is very durable and very cost-efficient. It's why toys rely on on it a lot, like Bandai's G-Frame line is entirely ABS too because it's from the toy division and they're expected to be played with

      Just building my BT saber tiger gold after staying on my backlog for years and my god the plastic is really brittle. I used a lot of super glue just to finish the backpack + weaponry. The pegs also need a lot of filing unless anyone enjoys the white stress mark on the counter-peg. People better stay away from copied design 3rd party.
      Despite the bad experience with copied design, the same can't be said for some of their 'original' design. I built red ghost kiyomori and have a blast with it. Despite the inner frame is 100% plastic (unless you count the screw) the details are superb and the manual is easy to read. The result kit is rock solid and really satisfying.
