For me, the easiest to spot reference to Evangelion would have been the red on black text of "sound only" with the HOME logo in Phantoms, very reminiscent of the Seele communication screens. Really liked that reference
Honestly the entirety of Phantoms was what made me realize the Eva inspo. That and the fact the morgue scene *uses the entry plug ambience*. Yes, really. I checked.
about 15 minutes in I pieced together that it might be evangelion inspired from the name and the fact that its taking place in 1999, close to the time of the second impact, but thought it could still be a coincidence. it was all but confirmed for me when I saw the seele sound only reference. that was such a cool surprise
Placing the CGI models in flame was very clever. The bright red and chaotic lighting lights up the model in such a way that even a rougher render still looks serviceably believable.
With each and every instance of the Mind of the Night granting us a feast of a moving picture, I promptly wheeze forcibly, levitate 16 meters off the ground, and spin at a velocity of not less than 280 km/s. This is, without fail, done for a time period equal to 19 rotations of our home planet about its axis. Blessed we be, those blessed as we are.
the scene of the person hunched over with shaking hands as the gunk leaks out of their mask... fucked me up SO bad on a first viewing lol. one of the best scenes i've seen in the genre, can't get it out of my head
I think Evans infected Connors which is why he was taking longer than normal to replace the water. Maybe he put cells from the alien in there or put a small drop of blood in to infect the whole facility.
That was bothering me with the "O'Connor is to blame. No, he was infected directly by Evans through cup of water her brought. It fees blatant and simple and I'm more than a little sad Nick would miss it to concoct a "let's blame someone else" instead of going with "that assailant excuse feels like a crappy but typical FBI/CIA style cover.
Ive been hoping you would cover this series! Its such a great take on analog horror with great production quality for its size. Its got real potential to rise up in the community like Greylock did
Hello Night Mind! Midwest/Wisconsin viewer here (longtime fan, first time comment maker). Douglas and Washington county are actually counties in Wisconsin and as the title says Midwest, I am assuming this might be a Wisconsin based analog horror which makes me extra excited for it and thank you for bringing attention to such a cool unfiction. Love your content, keep making great things, and being a great cat human entity
Fellow midwesterner here! (Minnesota to be exact!) and I’m just as hyped as you! I love when the Midwest is represented in media, especially indie media! Analog Horror, Digital Horror, live action, animated, or my personal favorite: mixed media featuring all of these at once! I’m super stoked!!!💖💖💖
Along with Evangelion, I can’t help but wonder if Hellstar Remina served as inspiration, as well! The video called Azazel containing the sacrifice reminds me of the crucifixions in Remina. This is such an incredible series, can’t wait to see more 🤩
The Stages video makes the Starkill sound like something you'd see in a real-time strategy video game. Especially the "Self-Replication" slide: the way "altars" and "temples" are described remind me of how certain units can only be built with specific buildings in those games. If anything the Starkill reminds me of the Zerg - they gather biomass to use in their structures, assimilate life-forms into their hivemind, and specific buildings can produce specific types of units: "altars" are like their hatcheries where they can only produce smaller life-forms, and "temples" would be like their hives or greater spires where they can produce larger units.
Absolutely inspirational. Like seriously, I never thought of it that way. It makes a lot of sense in retrospect, but also having it utilized in a visual medium outside of pure interaction like a vidya gayme is really cool!
The words on anyone being able to make 3d art is really encouraging. I started messing with blender to make streaming related stuff, and seeing the incineration scene makes me want to get creative with it.
Working on a silly little animation right now using Blender, OpenToonz, ToonSquid, DaVinci Resolve, and more that is also lightly based on NGE, specifically the teaser trailer…at least in format. But regardless, I can confirm that Blender is a WONDERFUL tool for creating crazy stuff, both hyper detailed and gloriously simple and everything in between! I wish you the best in unlocking the full power of Blender, with or without additional software!
The cool as a cucumber voices of 911 operators in these projects always delight me so much, because you don't have to dig very far into true crime to know that THEY REALLY SOUND EXACTLY LIKE THAT. You can tell them anything and they just go "okay we have someone on their way, please stay on the line" as if you just told them it was a mild fender-bender.
Hey Douglas county!! KMTV3 is Nebraska. We're in sarpy but Washington and Douglas are just north. It's the Omaha/ Fremont area. This makes me so happy, thank you for sharing "local" analog!!
Sort of. The main reason why analog horror is so popular is because of its presentation and aesthetic. Old technology that is breaking down that was recovered, finding something that you are not supposed to find. The second reason why its so popular is that it drip feeds information which has always been extremely popular, from the show Lost to how Resident Evil hates random notes scattered about to give you some information about what is going on while you can still fill in some details yourself.
@@bigblue344 im also willing to bet that the presentation makes up for a lack of resources, meaning that the skills of art and filmmaking can shine through a bit more; its harder to see all the individual flaws in a 3D model if the camera is fuzzy, and if you can't do 3D modeling, a PSA or instructional video is as good an excuse as any to flex your graphic design or 2D artwork skills. the flaws in the art styles are hidden by the format, while the skills of the artist in question are still very visible. this was the same reason a lot of games we consider visually ugly nowadays were considered the height of realism when they released; because the lower resolution of monitors and TVs back in the day meant that the low-poly models appeared much more high fidelity, giving the illusion of realism.
@@bigblue344Also, personally, because of how analog horror is often presented through tapes of news reports and educational tapes, it is more "real" compared to traditional style horror movies. Even compared to the found footage style of something like the Blair Witch Project, the more informational style of analog horror lends a sort of in universe credibility: it's the difference between a video of monster attacking a group of people, and there being educational tapes about said monster and how to avoid it attacking you.
Something about the use of the word “assimilation” and the image of a dog with weird tentacles coming out of its back gives me strong John Carpenter’s The Thing vibes
This series reminds me a lot of Gemini Home Entertainment. Which can only be a good thing, as its my favorite analogue horror series of the whole lot of them.
i wish there was an analog horror using AI/cyborgs/mechanical stuff other than just organic body horror. I hope i can find a good version of that someday. But this one indeed stands out among the others. This is good work.
Have a look at vintage 8. They have body horror and ais and so much other stuff. Their earliest ai focused series is the Oracle but you should really start with the Tangi virus. Most of the stuff is in the same universe so it is well worth wattching everything
possibly a weird question mr nick nocturne, but would you be willing to indicate in the future whether the series you cover are jumpscare heavy? i want to watch the different projects before your videos as you suggest, but in all honesty i can’t personally handle jump scares (which is why i came to your channel in the first place to a degree) so it would be beneficial to know whether they’re commonplace or not in the future? thank you so much for keeping this channel alive and putting out uploads so consistently, it must be so much work and i and so many others are so grateful to you!
This series gives me Dead Space kind of vibes. Weird religion connected to a parasitic entity trying to gather biomass via weird body horror stuff. Thanks for sharing this with us. It's very interesting, definitely looking forward to where this story is going.
It's amazing the way they take something stylistically so similar to GHE and apply it to a B-movie level alien invasion, just like the movie used to introduce it.
I'm fairly certain that the missing sample vial was used to infect the water cooler (that's why it took so long for Evans to replace it). He then gave a cup of infected water to O'Connor, which is how O'Connor got infected. And then O'Connor infected his church through any number of means.
Nick, you should check out Basilisk. It's an unfiction project about two games with the same title that never got released and there's some very spooky stuff in there, spooky stuff going on with the game developers as well. Sagan Hawkes has a really good video on it, but maybe you'll want to go in blind.
Same! Finally "beat" Nick...even tho he was prolly analyzing and writing the script for this video while we were waking to a crazy classified reality that has so many different webs to weave!
Another thing this reminds me of aside from Evangelion is actually Halo (the video game series). An intelligent infection from space that starts out slow and causes people to sprout tentacles feels awful "the flood" esque to me.
I haven't seen anyone point it out, but the camera being on for hours after its battery should've been dead is an amazing hint towards their ability to incorporate technology into the organism
14:17 There are 13 and 14 positions respectively in those coordinates. According to the chart in XKCD 2170, they're either tracking down to a couple hundred atoms' precision, or their database is Weird.
Cat dad feedin' his creatures of the night good lately. I was hoping to hear some coverage of Midwest Angelica from here, the project deserves all the attention it can get.
Nick has made enough videos subverting my expectations that by now, I trust when he covers something, it's probably something good (or the Mandela Catalogue.) That being said, it still fills me with dread when I see a video title with the word "Analog Horror" in it.
I remember you talking about this but never knew what it was. I have made an entire series on my channel dedicated to good/bad Analog Horror, so this is always a great change of pace.
This type of series is why I say no idea can ever truly be overdone, there's always unique and interesting takes you can do with any sort of material so long as you have the desire to experiment and be playful with the ideas and themes core to the experience, and some outside inspiration goes a long way too.
Absolutely amazing video! I can never get enough of the cold enticing mood you're always able to put on with your voice work it makes everything so much more immersive. While this analog horror is absolutely amazing, I think the thing I appreciated the most from this video was actually the constant care and attention that you put towards not only highlighting all of the impressive parts of the piece but using that to ENCOURAGE others to follow in the same footsteps. Even though it could take away screen time from what we're here to see causing more work for you, you still took the time to try and inspire and put the tools in others hands to so they can follow their passions which is awesome to see!
An FPS game would be a very cool way to explore this story, lately I've been playing SCP 5K and the feeling of being (armed to the teeth) and helpless nonetheless is pretty scary to me. Love your videos btw Nick!
I thought it was alright. Some of the visuals were great, but other times the 3D graphics stood out from the real footage in a jarring way. More importantly though, the story never really grabbed me; it felt like a lot of things I've seen before, and what was unique to this story wasn't quite enough to capture my interest. Season 1 also felt like it ended really abruptly, right in the middle of what felt like the buildup to a climax, which seemed odd to me. Still, it's definitely an overall solid series, and I had a good time watching it. I'll probably watch season 2, just to see where it goes, and maybe it will grip me more than the first season. I hope we get to see more of the actual Midwest Angelica movie at some point in the new season. It would be strange if the thing the series is named after only came up once.
I really enjoyed this one. My favorite scene is definitely when the original creature was being burned and it was zoomed in on one of the people in the suits.
As someone who was the from almost the start, your analysis let me catch several things I had missed. So thanks for that, and for spreading word of this series in dire need of more and deserved attention
I love seeing you cover analog horror series. I hope you cover a series like TRYRED WITNESS ARCHIVES, CRT Anomalies, or The Painter in the near future.
Oh, this is GOOOOOD. It's giving me Gemini Home Entertainment vibes, but with better pacing. You shoulda seen the faces I was making watching this shit! Maddest of props to the creator of this masterpiece!
Nick really been out here since Candy bowl making it monumentally important that pacing is so important. I know he said it was frustrating but it must have been way bigger of a deal than I originally thought. Great video.
I love that the very first video not only serves as a trailer for the series, but has an in-universe explanation as the psychic effects of AZ-001 forcing someone to make a movie predicting its arrival.
I had seen this years ago but thought the 8 minute episode where the creature lands and emerges was the finale. And even then I considered it one of the best analog horrors I’d seen. I had never seen the following videos with the assimilations until today and my mind is blown! Horror with creatures and animals is my absolute favorite type and The Thing 1982 is my favorite movie of all time. So this has now bumped up to perhaps my top favorite analog horror project (so far...) Great coverage as always.
Apparently I’m having a Mandela effect because I totally remember watching this in like... 2020, early 2021 at the latest, and it being old THEN, thinking to myself “how have I not seen this before if it’s been around this long”... but apparently this all came out last year??
Man, this series started off really interesting to me. The corpse of a massive alien, possibly drifting between galaxies?! That was such a great start, and with the coverage coming as astronomers and astrophysicists tracking a new body was a wonderful departure from so many other projects. Then it just becomes a pretty standard meat monster making zombies/a hive mind. The delivery is pretty interesting with the new formats, but damn, it falls right into so many "eldritch horror" stereotypes that it's just not worth watching past the first couple episodes.
This is a perfect example of what I mean when I tell ppl the analog horror genre isn't dead, nor is it dying, it's in a slump. It just needs creative originality from more content creators to pull it out of that slump. Monument Mythos, Midwest Angelica, and Greylock do this beautifully. Hell, Angel Hare, while it doesn't do anything for me personally, is still another stellar example that has gripped so many ppl with the level of creativity behind it, and rightfully so! Playing Silent Hill and watching the Ju-On films as a kid terrified me so much, that afterwards it made me think I was desensitized to all other horror for years, since nothing hollywood, the indie film scene, nor the gaming industry has ever produced has been even remotely scary for me. So I just started enjoying horror for the plot, until that got boring. Analog horror has renewed my love of horror, and has done it in such a unique way and I genuinely want to see it grow even more.
Nick's been our Vergil in the dark for years now, but this time Midwest Angelica seems to promise its own pathways into darkness. As for "Stages", that's totally a cancer analogy. And also kind of like The Flood.
I don't see many args that take place in my state, but i always appreciate them. The fact that i know where the towns are and how close in proximity they are to my town makes it a whole lot spookier.
You have no idea how much I needed this upload Nick, I have had one hell of a ringer this week and this is just what I need to help me relax and calmly study for my exams. So thanks my dude :)
I knew you would be on this series early too! Your recommendation to Rapid Eyes is what led me to The Midwest Angelica! Hopefully this is just season one of the galactic opus!!
Midwest Angelica is one of two horror projects I already have experience with. The other is 9mm Theater's 'Zombie Radio -The Apocalypse Will Be Broadcast.'
Hey nick, I’ve been thinking about starting up my own unfiction series recently, and I’ve been going over some of your videos and really listening to how you critique and encourage certain aspects of different projects. It’s been really inspirational to me, in fact. I don’t want to share any details on what i have planned, but let’s just say that it’s heavily inspired by projects like this and Gemini Home Entertainment. Both of those series really hit close to home because i actually live in the area that Gemini takes place in, and seeing how effective horror can be created by just about anyone really motivated me to get this project underway. I made previous attempts to start a web series, but realized i was going about it all wrong by making my clues too cryptic and having a complete lack of experience in the genre. Anyways all i wanted to say is that having someone with your experience giving advice has been a huge help to me!
This was such a cool, unnerving series and, as Nick said, it's inventiveness when it comes to how it presents information really stands out. Even just a simple diagram of a dot moving on a map manages to be unsettling, which is such a big achievement.
My main problem with this that Nick didn't addres is if all these tapes are from the past who the hell is documenting these tapes like the SCP foundation? Surely humanity must have survived if some sort of official looking group is looking at these tapes after the fact (and still investigating as if they knew nothing about HOME's existence until recently)
Finally! One I have stumbled upon before you bring it to our attention. I've had a rough last few months, I'm gonna let myself briefly feel a bit smug on this 😊

Eldritch space horror is extremely common in analog horror right now, people are just copying whatever the other guy is doing.

Nick has made enough videos subverting my expectations that by now, I trust when he covers something, it's probably something good (or the Mandela Catalogue.)
That being said, it still fills me with dread when I see a video title with the word "Analog Horror" in it.
'Unusual behaviour' or the winner in the bone cracking olympics?
Absolutely amazing video! I can never get enough of the cold enticing mood you're always able to put on with your voice work it makes everything so much more immersive. While this analog horror is absolutely amazing, I think the thing I appreciated the most from this video was actually the constant care and attention that you put towards not only highlighting all of the impressive parts of the piece but using that to ENCOURAGE others to follow in the same footsteps. Even though it could take away screen time from what we're here to see causing more work for you, you still took the time to try and inspire and put the tools in others hands to so they can follow their passions which is awesome to see!
45:50 well that's unfortunate. Well at least it was entertaining and well thought out to mostly be it's own thing too.
Yours is by far the best coverage of MA I've seen so far. You have a knack, mister ❤
Minaxa did a good video on it, too. That's how I found it.
An FPS game would be a very cool way to explore this story, lately I've been playing SCP 5K and the feeling of being (armed to the teeth) and helpless nonetheless is pretty scary to me. Love your videos btw Nick!
There is nothing more wholesome than seeing the creator of one successful ARG come in and give a shoutout to another.
Man this reminds of both invasion of the body snatchers and a little bit of war of the worlds really well done!
46:04 - This is a 2001 reference, I think. Same as the 'Thus Spake Zarathustra' segment.
midwest angelica video? you love to see it, big fan of this series and super glad you're giving it a spotlight!
The lack of an Oklahoman twang took me out of the live action part. I have family there. They have a soft accent.
I really enjoyed this one. My favorite scene is definitely when the original creature was being burned and it was zoomed in on one of the people in the suits.
9:06 hilarious to see my old college campus at Drexel from Philly be used as b role for a horror story set in Nebraska.
As someone who was the from almost the start, your analysis let me catch several things I had missed.
So thanks for that, and for spreading word of this series in dire need of more and deserved attention
I am so glad to see you cover this one! I loved everything about Midwest Angelica, the way they tell their story just feels so fresh.
Somehow, someway, Nick always uploads on the days I always need it most. Thanks for being one of my favorite channels for almost a full decade now ❤
I love seeing you cover analog horror series.
Great video.
gilbert garfield vid stole my soul
Omg my notifications are FINALLY WORKING
You’re first! Congratulations! Have a medal! 🥇
Not for me
Man, this series started off really interesting to me.
Getting a “Color Out of Space” vibe from this series!
Oh man MWA sub count about to explooooode. Well deserved for sure!! Good choice, Nick!!
Yay!! This is a great series and I have been hoping it would start getting more attention. Thanks for covering it!
Always a great time for a new NM video. MWA has always had that professional vibe to it.
Nice to see you cover it :) One of my favourite analog horrors
Midwest Angelica is one of my absolute favorites in the analog horror community and I’m so glad to see folks covering it lately!
I knew you would be on this series early too! Your recommendation to Rapid Eyes is what led me to The Midwest Angelica! Hopefully this is just season one of the galactic opus!!
Yes! I’ve been waiting for you to cover this series since I first discovered it!
nick, it's so good to see you again I truly hope you're well
so happy this series is getting more attention, its amazing!!!
I love how much Gemini Home Entertainment DNA this new series has. Anything new inspired by that masterpiece is great in my books.
I don’t think that anyone has talked about Nebraska this much before, thank you nightmind; finally somebody noticed us
Shh shh shh back to the snow with you
4:35 there is a Douglas county, it's in Nevada
The day is always automatically better when Night Mind posts :)
The stories coming out now with analog horror just keep improving ad showing just how far everyone wants to go and will. Thank you for covering this.
Oh, I've been looking forward to this video. Thank you for the early Christmas present, Nick!
I just found out about this last week! I’m so glad you are covering it!!!!
Midwest Angelica is one of two horror projects I already have experience with.
The other is 9mm Theater's 'Zombie Radio -The Apocalypse Will Be Broadcast.'
Fresh night mind drop!!?? Heck yes! Perfect for a break from the heavy topic I'm working on currently
Hell yea this is the first series I beat you to it’s soo good and I cannot wait to see how it develops
I get so excited every time I see night mind posted! I love their videos!
FINALLY THIS SERIES IS GETTING THE RECOGNITION IT DESERVES
Ironically I just finished watching Midwest before this got posted. Great analog horror series and can't wait for the future of it.
first mandela catalogue, and now midwest angelica. wiscansin really do got the weird shit huh
14:37 half life grunts are on the scene
been waiting for you to cover this, i watched the series a few months back and immediately knew you would fall in love with it once you found it!
As someone who’s name is Angelica this series is a trip.
The real question is…. are you from the Midwest?
Hey nick,
I’ve been thinking about starting up my own unfiction series recently, and I’ve been going over some of your videos and really listening to how you critique and encourage certain aspects of different projects.
Love all the various approaches of media in this series!
This was such a cool, unnerving series and, as Nick said, it's inventiveness when it comes to how it presents information really stands out. Even just a simple diagram of a dot moving on a map manages to be unsettling, which is such a big achievement.
I love all of Night Mind's videos! Please keep up the great work. I appreciate it.
I've had a rough last few months, I'm gonna let myself briefly feel a bit smug on this 😊
Thank you so much for pointing this series out!
So glad you are covering this. I was hoping you be into it so and yay 🙌
Lesson learned, same as Napoleon, under no circumstances should you ever enter The Midwest.
