Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae wo Bokutachi wa Mada Shiranai might be the most difficult to remember Anime title of all time, but the story about Menma and her strong bond with her childhood friends is still unforgotten until today. This song is truly another classic in the history of Anime music and until today, I still listen to this song whenever I need a break from my everyday life.
Arranging a slow, lyrical song for the piano is always a special challenge for me. Because you have to somehow convey the special atmosphere of the original song with the sound of piano alone. But at the same time, you have to utilize the right amount of musical ornaments or else it would disturb the flow of music too much.
Since a piano has only limited ways to replicate a humans voice (I really wish I can utilize a vibrato-sound like a violin on the piano...) I have to think of various ways how to properly reflect the structure the music, so that it truly feels like the music itself is telling you a story. The first chorus is deliberately held back without playing any deep bass notes, because I wanted to slowly build up the tension for the later parts of this song. The goal of this arrangement is the culmination of feelings in the final chorus and that's why the bass keys are only utilized in the very last moment in 4:03.
A rather special part of this arrangement would be the solo voice part at 3:19, where only the right hand is playing. I have only this technique once in the beginning part of Madoka Magica Soundtrack Medley ( • Puella Magi Madoka Mag... ) and it really feels like the music has stopped for a moment so the voice alone can shine.
All in all, this arrangement is probably one of the easier piano pieces I have arranged and the feeling of nostalgia is especially strong with this one. I still can't believe AnoHana has aired almost 9 years ago. Time surely passes when when you get older...

3:33 As a kid, I thought having the left hand play over the right hand was the coolest thing ever and here, it kinda looks like when kids play a game and are skipping over each other. If you want to be metaphorial, it's kinda like how the past (left hand on left side), present (right hand) and future (left hand on right side) are connected. Sorry if that doesn't make sense

Thank you once again for the beautiful music, this is one of the best songs in the anime history: it was used to wake up a certain feeling during the anime and even now, after many years, I start feeling emotional when I hear these notes.
1:38 I love how, in this part, you started with some gentle, almost sappy mood, then the joyful skipping part (though the lyrics in that part meant "sad, lonely fights we had") was a really nice articulation of the song's mood. Really well done!!!! I love pianists who put so much thought on articulation instead of just hitting the right notes or go unnecessarily berserk. Brilliant!

I actually have listened to Animenz’s version played at Animenz Live 2015. Ano Hana is one of my favorite anime, I really love the quiet part at 3:19. DAMN this is just too beautiful, i love how you filler fits soo good between the melody in the beginning until the chorus, and damn when the chorus start the dynamics, this made me almost cry xDD too much memories from back then, 2:00 i really like that litle build up there, and damn the bass at the last chorus it hits hard in the feels such a nice and unforgettable song, for me its similar to ichiban from angel beats, it has the same amount of feels and a nice throwback and thiis song never gets old.

Holy crap the timing, I just finished rewatching this series yesterday! The way this song kind of builds up is so great. I gotta say every time you do an arrangement of a song I like it's always really special. Whenever I go looking on youtube for a cover of a song that is on my mind I always come to your channel first since if you've done it, I know it will be great. I really wish there was an Animenz arrangement for every song :P
Edit: Oh yeah, and last week when you did the Spice and Wolf one I was also watching that show at the time.
