  • In this video, pro bass angler Luke Clausen explores the often-overlooked art of spinnerbait bass fishing and demonstrates how they can outperform ChatterBaits in certain conditions. Spinnerbaits are especially effective for targeting smallmouth bass, all species of bass during the shad spawn, and offer a more subtle presentation when needed.

    • SPINNERBAIT - Z-Man Sling BladeZ Double Willow Spinnerbait, 1/2-ounce: wired2.fish/3L...
    • TROLLING MOTOR - Power-Pole MOVE ZR Trolling Motor Black: wired2.fish/3T...
    • ROD - Phenix Feather Casting Rod, 6'9" Medium Heavy: wired2.fish/3Y...

    • LINE - Seaguar Tatsu Fluorocarbon, 15-pound: wired2.fish/3k...
As Luke notes, sometimes the bass seem to prefer spinnerbaits over ChatterBaits. And a spinnerbait's unique safety-pin design allows them to fish cleaner around heavy grass, laydowns, brush, and trees.
Changing retrieve speeds is critical to triggering reaction strikes when spinnerbait bass fishing. Clausen constantly changes his retrieve speed and direction and incorporates pops, all of which cause the blades to flash. So what are the best spinnerbaits for fishing? While highly subjective, he delves into the ongoing debate over the best blade combinations and explains the benefits of double willow or Colorado/Indiana setups. Ultimately, it comes down to your confidence in the bait.
Clausen doesn't fret spinnerbait trailers - sure, he uses them periodically for profile but has confidence without them too when spinnerbait bass fishing. Regarding rod setups, Clausen shares his preferences for different fishing environments, from cover to open water, and offers advice on reel speeds and line choices to avoid overworking the bait.
Finally, he discusses the most popular spinnerbait bass fishing colors, such as white and chartreuse, and reveals some lesser-known but highly effective options. Pay attention to the power of green pumpkin hues and bluegill-colored spinnerbaits, especially in clear or tannic waters where they can outperform their more traditional counterparts.
Join us as we revive the lost art of spinnerbait bass fishing, sharing invaluable tips and insights to help you master this versatile lure and catch more fish.

Yes I am a spinnerbait guy and I like your tip on the blue gill color ... I believe that's right and I will be trying it out, as I live on one of the most pressured lakes in the country... Here's my tip for spinnerbaits : go to Walmart fishing aisle and look on the bottom shelf for the $1 spinnerbaits buy a few and go throw them in the thickest branches logs and junk you can find ... Point Your Rod tip directly at the spinnerbait and retrieve ...it's like putting it into four-wheel drive and it will come through NEARLY anything ... Probably not a technique you want to try with your $15 spinnerbait ... Matt Allen taught me this and it allows you to fish the heavier cover where the big ones live.

Spinnerbait is my favorite bait hands down! It catches big fish, it catches a lot of fish, and it catches fish when nothing else seems to! I bought a Plano guide series 7771 tackle box for the space it has, but even more so because of the 21 Spinnerbait hanger in it!

Love a spinnerbait, been throwing one for 30 years and still do good with it today… I noticed all boat control and mental gps went out the other side the boat when that 6pounder smashed it! 😂. I struggle to find a good spinnerbait rod these days. Everything has a super fast action

Count me as one of those people that had got away from fishing a spinnerbait. But, this spring I have been and I've caught a lot of fish. I also agree on fishing it on a little slower reel. I use a 6.4:1 on a 7'-1" rod. I also can attest to the bluegill color. Caught one of my all time biggest this spring on that color. Great video.

Spinnerbait is my favorite bait and it catch big bass.
I love a chatterbait too, but I fish them totally different from a spinnerbait.

I think the key to selecting which blades to use on your spinnerbait has less to do with presentation (blade flash) and MORE to do with RETRIEVAL SPEED. Retrieval speed should be determined by water temperature and water CLARITY.
If it's colder and/or murkier water, the extra drag created by Colorado/Indiana blades or a single big Colorado blade will definitely slow a spinnerbait down. I'm certain the slower spinnerbait speed helps more lethargic bass in cold water catch up to the spinnerbait, whether the water is clear or murky.
In murky water, the slower spinnerbait using Indiana and/or Colorado blades, along with the increased vibration that's generated, helps a bass track and target the spinnerbait with the lateral line in the diminished visibility of the turbid water. Slower speeds and more thump are the key.
Conversely, in clear water, willow blades help a spinnerbait move much faster. So, clear water bass that see spinnerbaits with willow blades only get a fleeting glance of the quicker spinnerbait, and don't really get a long look at just how ridiculous and unnatural a spinnerbait truly looks, IMO.

Everybody will tell you buy a white and a white/chartreuse of each type. Buy yourself 2 gold shiner War Eagles and compare. I also like the Megastrike Roland Martin Big Bass spinnerbait in the gold pattern. It has heavier wire and a swing head. The light wire ones do work great. But they will eventually break.

Spinnerbaits will always be a classic. There are so many variations and tricks/tips to a spinner bait. (Blades and types, color of blades, size of blades and stinger hooks) A chatter bait is just simple, tie on and throw it out and reel it back.
Place and time for a spinner bait absolutely, versatile as a chatter-bait, NEVER. 😂

I don’t think the spinnerbait is a forgotten bait at all. Talk to any bass fisherman and they’ll know about or have a spinnerbait in their tackle. This is like the 2nd time I’ve come across the idea of the Spinnerbait being forgotten and it’s a myth too often from the same source Wired2fish.

The chatterbait for me has had zero effect on how often I throw a spinnerbait. Both excel in different conditions and even lake to lake depending on the available cover. You can rip a chatterbait through grass but if you throw a spinnerbait through it, there's a good chance the grass will wrap up in the swivel and render it useless for the rest of that cast. You can also easily roll a spinnerbait over logs and bump it over hard cover but will almost always snag a chatterbait.
