    Thank you :) I've been aware of my bipolar for a few years, started counseling because of it and had that diagnosis confirmed. But my social circles discounted the idea that I was bipolar, because they never saw me out of control... I kept that either underwraps or firmly inhand. Was nice to have someone validate that going off the handle and destroying my life isn't an automatic part of bipolar.

    I too have been hospitalized 5 times for mania, and once for suicidal depression. Finally, for the first time ever, I was loosing sleep, increased energy, impulsive spending- went on for about 3 or 4 days, called my doc, got back on the seroquel, and voila- no more mania. now i'm sleepy guy, but that sure beats foaming-at-the-mouth-maniac-in-the-hospital-guy.

    I have always known that I could use both highs and lows to my advantage even though others don't get it or agree.
    Love my highs who wouldn't enjoy elation and feeling incredibly happy? Right?
    However when I'm flying I'm also aware what goes up must come down so in a sense I don't want to feel too high or my down state will be like falling off a freakin cliff.
    When manic I could do a comedy show and everybody loves me. I don't need much sleep. Have tones of energy and use that to clean my house and other things that need a lot of energy.
    When I'm down which is an automatic reaction after I've been high for so long I'm aghausted and stop talkin, withdraw go inside my mind sleep a lot but I look forward to what I call my down time because lets face it we all need to rest now and then so I know its necessary knowing I can't stay up there forever. When down yes it can be extreme I write poetry and try to express myself through art and the most important thing I hold onto is that as opposed to my younger days at 55 yrs of age I know it will end and I will be high and happy again and because now I know its not the end of the world and a part of me wants to experience another high I hang in there.
    This is how I manage myself these days. I see a benefit to both up and down stages.

    It's totally true that you can heal from BD, there is no doubt about it...I don't have all the words to describe how this is possible, but it's a mix of emotions, thoughts, intuition and senses...and a lot of practice.

    Mr Wootten may I ask where you got the information that most bipolar people spend their time in a state that's not acute depression, dysthymia or hypo/mania? It's been my experience as a bipolar that it's mostly depression with some hypomania and rarely mania, but the depression as I age (I'm 26 now) is more a mainstay than it used to be. Part of this could be because of drug abuse and its effects on my brain which I can't fairly attribute to just bipolar. Who knows? Lots of bipolar people though apparently are more frequently dysregulated than not. This is according to a psychiatry book from 2004 I saw the other day, with a graph made by I believe a psychiatrist. So I was wondering your source on this, or if it's just your intuition. Either way, it's fine. Everyone has their perspective. Thanks for the talk.

    I have been on 200 mg a day but have been on 400 before. Great for 'stabilization'.
    I have realized that unless I want to go live in a cave somewhere a fully manic state of mind us not possible to live with in this society. Ultimately it is self-serving and 'God' would have me serving others than just myself.

    Yeah, did Seroquel but got off of that. Lamictal is the way to go...It doesnt mess with your head, make you groggy, etc. It just works. They make a generic now too.
    When Im manic I don't go spending, etc... I just think about and identify with the 'All-Maker'..lol... and other states of consciousness. Then I start speaking in metaphors. Then I get taken to the hospital by my family....oh well! I know the score
    Cant ever take that away from me. ;)

    just practice meditation for years it will cure it,

    • @BipolarAdvantage
      @BipolarAdvantage  8 лет назад +1

      That depends on what you think cure means. Cure to me is that you have the full range of experiences and they are equally valuable. No matter what the state it give you insight to best handle the situation. Mania and depression when understood are advantages to have, not something you need to make go away and think that means cured.

    • @fumarate1
      @fumarate1 8 лет назад

      Bipolar Advantage are you talking about biological depression of situational depression?

    • @BipolarAdvantage
      @BipolarAdvantage  8 лет назад +2

      It does not matter whether you can find a reason for the state when you understand what to do with it. What matters is how you react to it. The state just is; what you feel, think and do while in it determines whether you suffer from it or you use it to your advantage. In either case it hurts the same. www.psychologytoday.com/blog/bipolar-advantage/201207/how-i-found-ecstasy-in-depression might give you a feel for what it could be.
