I'm glad Jimmy talked about the different ways of reading Scripture that can result in very different interpretations. The example of Matthew 16 :18 especially jumped out in my mind because the Gospel Reading for the Mass the day this video was uploaded is Matthew 16 :13-23, and the Gospel Acclamation is taken from the same passage: it's Matthew 16 :18. I have to look up the chapter and verse numbers, but I'm well familiar with the passage because I grew up going to Mass every Sunday. Catholics do know the Bible even if we don't memorize chapter and verse. We just know it as it was written and originally proclaimed. The chapter and verse numbers are a great help for finding certain passages, and I wish I had that memorization skill because it would be helpful, but I learned to internalize a full passage for comprehension, and that's not bad.
I like the way Mr. Aikan presents his thoughts without joking or using unnecessary rhetorical means. I have a background as protestant and my father was a Lutheran priest, and I have been with the Pentecostal congregation for a long time, but there are many things that I don’t find quite pleasing, including that people can make up their own mind about biblical truths. Without the early church meetings, we would have no church today and that means that church history is what brings up even the protestant denominations. So we are all dependent on the apostolic teaching and the early church.
