    People actually have domesticated them!

Because of the severe drought, there has been a herd of 10 collared peccaries coming in nightly to water. I have a large lot with no neighbors which is literally out in the desert. Several nights ago I witnessed a behavior I have never seen before. The herd picked a well protected spot, scratched out a circular indentation about 8 inches deep and piled into it to spend the night. The inner space was held by the sows and their new babies. The perimeter was occupied by the males and younger females. They were all facing outward in what appeared to be a defensive perimeter. They spent the night then left at the break of dawn. I keep my space because I know what can happen. I've seen big dogs ripped up pretty badly by these guys. Wild animals should be respected fully.

Recommend that the Calgary Zoo personnel take a trip to Arizona and actually observe Javelina. They prefer water to lay and roll in. These actually look like collared peccaries. They do not like cold.
