  • Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Chase Elliott have a history together, which includes the driver winning an Xfinity Series title with JR Motorsports in 2014. In addition, the pair are also linked together because they have held the title of Most Popular Driver for the last two decades.
This past week, the two offered differing opinions on the same subject - race start times. While the pair disagreed for various reasons, both of their opinions were based on improving the overall NASCAR experience for the fans.

As a TV Watching fan for over 60 years, It's so frustrating never knowing what time a race will be on and never knowing what channel it will be on. I personally would love to have the races at the same time each week, and on the same channel. NASCAR does not care about the fans at home or they would make it easier with information and a channel and time schedule that can be depended on.

Why in the world would anyone want to go sit on bleachers in 100* heat! There’s no enjoyment in that. The later start times are the ones I look forward to the most. NASCAR is treading water right now and I believe the switch to NBC was right on time. The Nashville race was so much better, broadcast wise than any so far this season. Viewership will be higher on the later start time races. It’s really not hard to see this stuff.

This sort of compared two different scenarios. I think Jr was getting at consistent start times for day races only. Chase Elliott addressed the best time to run summer races, which is at night if you don't want to look like a lobster and feel like a heater. I think Chase nailed it, though. Summer races in the south should be at night if possible, and Saturday night at that. Regarding Dale Jr, he lives on the east coast, so 1pm is convenient for eastern time and only eastern time. A noon start for Central time is not ideal, and it only gets worse if you live out west. I like Jr because he has a feeling of owing the sport what it gave him and his family, and approaches it with that reverence, but he is off on this one.

  • @Lewis_T

I agree with Chase. And as for keeping up with times, has Jr ever tried to watch nascar on tv? Fox/ NBC….NBC/ USA/ CNBC….. Chase is spot on…and the same could apply to Richmond (speaking as a fan who has regularly attended races). It is absolutely mind boggling why they moved the races from September at night to a day race in late July. Do they have any clue how hot it actually gets here? It’s literally not uncommon at all around here at that time of year to see highs in the upper 90s with the heat index 105+. It’s god awful. Not to mention mid/late afternoon storms that occur here that will push the race into the evening anyway. I can understand the spring race in the daytime, and can live with that, but to move the race from a night race in September to a day race in the middle of the summer makes no logical sense to me and shows how out of touch they are with the fanbase. Almost all sections of the grandstands are going to be exposed to the heat. If you are going to move the date to the middle of the summer, at least keep it as a night race. You guys have lights, use them!
I’ve been regularly attending races since 2011 but I am holding off on buying tickets this year until I know the forecast.

Chase is right. I had first hand experience on how the heat can affect fans. Several yesrs ago. My wife, myself and son were at Dover which both races when they still had two. This particular race was a very hot day and we kept pumping water, lemonade into us because of the heat. Even though we were drinking water snd lemonade as much as possible, halfway through my wife fell ill. Shevwas provided excellent care but that was the end of day races for us. Last 10+ years we have been doing night races last 4 Bristol. Plus we camp there so we are not sitting out in lot all day boiling. It is so much more enjoyable at night. You may have an hour or so of sun but it's generally setting. But as much as Chase is right unfortunately the networks don't have that feeling for fans. They look at the rediculous amount of money they pay for broadcasting rights and do what is best for them which is not 6:04 inline with fan interests. Jrs point is also fans but TV fans are not putting millions of dollars into the local economy like track fans do. Definitely aggree that summer races should be night races if track had lights

Football is the only sport with the same start times each Sunday. I’ve noticed a lot of differences and variations in the start times during the season. I have been to many races and baked in the sun for sure! I have been wanting Saturday races due to the fact that late races end so late, run right through the middle of dinner. Looking back, 1:00 now seems so early. But Saturday races that start at like 6-7 EST, heck I would be having so many NASCAR viewing parties it would be great! And of course the cooler weather in the stands when I go. Not all tracks have lights so there’s that, and so many tracks only have one race now how could they justify the expense inputting lights in. If they did keep it close to the same then I would be okay. 3:30 is not as hot as when it’s high noon. Or perhaps they have an East coast time and a West coast time? Thanks for the video.

Consistency is what we grew up with, Sunday at noon you better have the boob tube and rabbit ears dialed in because we're racing at 12:30. Junior remembers that because he wasn't with his Dad every weekend and wanted to watch him. Holiday weekends being the exception no race should start at 7:00 PM on a Sunday night. The people paying the bills have jobs to go to on Monday morning. TV executives don't care but track owners and promoters do! Who's buying the food, drink and merchandise..the fans at the track! If they raced under the lights every Saturday night that would be great, yeah. No why the founders didn't do that? To support local race tracks around the country that race every Saturday night! As much as I like Jr, he's said some odd things lately and this comment at 1:31 is one of them. I've been watching NASCAR since he was a little boy and "know how to watch a race". It is hard to watch a race when I can't see it though. OTA is the only way to get the races in more homes, it's a no-brainer. When I can watch a race, I don't appreciate the 10th intensity commentary simply because a pass was made. I know they're rare these days. I froze my butt off in Martinsville to watch a race when there was no pass on the track for the lead. A better pit stop gave Byron the lead and the win! Jr. would point out that Austin Dillon made a lot of passes. Yawn, he was in the P-mid 20's. I KNOW he cares about the sport deeply, but trying to make things appear better than they are doesn't help. Comparing Chastain to Dale Sr......????? Until the FANS are made the priority again, NASCAR will continue in this death spiral. I hope they listen to Chase and the fans!!

I'm in Chase's corner on this one. Anyone can find what time a race starts with their cellphone. There's no reason why the fans in the stands and the driver's should be roasting if the facilities have lights. He also has a point on moving the night races to Saturday as well. He's a class act.

Except my dad who uses a flip phone and always asks me "what time does the race start?"

You are so wrong on being able to find the time of a race on your phone, most of the time,it's not correct, and they change time and channel way to late and to often.

    Late start times suck.
Dale.Jr is right people are creatures of habit.
I know when the sunday NFL games start.
I know what time the playoff games will start.
But we need basic set times.
    Yes night races are better.
The drivers need to be looked after as well.
Eventually we are doing to have a driver heat issue might come in to play.

There's 2 different situations here...a night race is a night race...7pm...simple. a DAY race should be same time start wvey week except west coast races...not 5 different start times for a day race...

I don’t really care WHEN the racing starts, but I sure as heck would prefer to see races on major networks without having to purchase three streaming services to see them all. NASCAR, are you listening?
