Two-Time IndyCar Champion Josef Newgarden's Unconventional Motorsports Journey (FULL INTERVIEW)

  • Dale Earnhardt Jr brings two-time Indycar Champion Josef Newgarden to the studio for a conversation that turned out to be one of our favorites of the season. Why? Because the American open-wheeled racer is a dynamic personality in the sport on and off the track. Dale Jr. gets Josef to tell us about his forbidden desire to become a racer and how his first shot at racing came in sanctioned international scooter racing. From starting with scooters, how did a Nashville, Tenn.,-area native take a path through Europe to end up an IndyCar driver? It's a story that doesn't make much sense to some but is certainly intriguing.
Newgarden credits his father's influence, belief, and sometimes "hands-off" approach to making him into the racer he is. Oh, plus he played a role in introducing Josef to a Disney princess, who then became his wife. Oh yeah, it's that interesting of a story!
He talks about a Team USA racing scholarship that paved the way to success overseas. However, that success was met with challenges and at one point depression admits Newgarden before coming back to the states at the low point of his career. Then the opportunity of a lifetime presented itself and the determined young racer seized it. Fast forward a few years and he's a two-time IndyCar Champion racing for one of the biggest teams in the sport, Penske Racing. Newgarden opens up about the turning points that happened in this incredible journey.
Newgarden and Dale Jr. go over the new street circuit in the downtown streets of Nashville and the excitement building up to the Nashville Grand Prix. How will the surface, layout, and the big bridge over the river affect the event? Will a diving team be on hand?
The 30-year old driver talks about how one of his favorite drivers, 7-time NASCAR Champion Jimmie Johnson, has transitioned to the IndyCar ranks and what challenges he has faced in the process. That and so much more in this dynamic interview between a stock car racer and IndyCar driver.

Great insight, fun, educational and funny all in one and the best part is that it was completely unexpected. Josef represented himself, and all forms of racing exceptionally well. • @psychlops924
      @psychlops924 3 года назад +4

He’s only a 2 time champion and has won 23% of all the races he had for Team Penske in his first four years (and on track to match that again this year). Why the heck would IndyCar promote him?? /s
I became a fan of his when I saw him win his first race at Barber, where he found a way to pass in the final corners that no one else could do. I can’t tell you how irksome it is that he gets so little attention compared to likes of Rossi and Herta. The last 4 champions have been Newgarden, Dixon, Newgarden, Dixon, and had there been one more race last year I’m convinced Josef could’ve taken it. Yet it seems like the media always treat him either as a new guy with potential or a journeyman driver, as opposed to treating him like the generational talent he is.
I’ll get off my soapbox now, but mark my words: Josef will be recognized as one of the IndyCar greats if he doesn’t jump ship to F1 or something like that.

I like the Download way better on RUclips vs NBC. It’s not as condensed and you get more of the conversation. Plus it’s not watered down with commercials. The only thing I’d like to see is more pictures and videos with the conversation like they have on NBC.

Loved the full length yt podcast. Is way better being able to see everyone talking than just listening

Can not wait for a part 2. I have had the honor of racing him virtually during lockdown in 2020 and he is one of the most chill guys ever.
Best of luck in Nashville Josef!

    Great interview! Great story teller!
Please bring Josef back for more! One story that was missing is the incident with Conor Daly at Texas when he drove for Ed Carpenter. You really see how this group of racers, especially when they are such close friends, huddle around each other in times like that day.

Maybe the best driver interview I have ever seen. Both by the host and the one interviewed.

Dal good morning my friend. I'm a big Earnhardt fan and have visited with both you and your father many a time at adverts. I raised my sons in Charlotte NC well in Waxhaw NC to be exact.. Watch your podcast all the time and wish only the best for your beautiful family.. But let me tell you your interview with Josef Newgarden's was the best to date. If you know it or not you and him are soul mates/ brothers from different mothers. You both are winners with good hearts that want the best for everyone around them... Just like your father you all like being in a position to help if you can. Jos's stories had me laughing and crying at the same time. One small request keep yourself active in making Dal the best you can be, don't change yourself for know one and keep your wife and children as close to you as you can... My sons and I love our NASCAR family and wish nothing but good luck for all of you...The Banks Family

So so glad for the full episode. I listen to the podcast first but then like to watch clips to see facial expressions/body language. This full episode is much more preferred than clips. I hope it isn’t the last full one we get. I’m going to watch whatever y’all put out anyway. Love this podcast! Josef was a great guest. Definitely need at least a second visit if not more. Thanks again for continually producing great content.

This was a fascinating conversation. Two of the few celebrities I would make an effort to meet. Dale's love of racing and really shows with the questions he asks and his genuine interest in the answers. Loved it. Thanks!
