Will You Like A Revv D20 If You Like A Fender Princeton?

- Do you like black panel Fenders? I think we all do, really. If you've been thinking about a D20 - here's how it is similar to and different from that classic Fender sound - with and without pedals.

This is exactly what I was trying to figure out about the D20. Thanks!!!!
Awesome!! Thanks for watching!!
We NEED J45 and a Vox flavored variants of the 20 series amp heads, I’ve never wanted something more in my whole life!
Man I have known you and your music for maybe 5 minutes but in that little time you’ve convinced me to chase your sound. I no longer want a Deluxe Reverb as badly as I want the D20 and the Tilt.
The D20 doesn't have the 'default' mid cut that the Princeton has (which isn't a bad thing)... However, if you run the D20 through a Princeton IR- it sounds pretty much like a Princeton. Those cabs/ speakers are a HUGE factor.
Yup.
i now have a d20, a Princeton (with 12" speaker) and a couple deluxes. I really gotta do this one myself :)
Excellent! I love the D20. I need to get one.
Thanks, Chris!!
I've been playing since '69 and was a die hard Fender/Vox/Marshall/Boogie guy for most of that time. That said, to me, the Revv sounds a little better and has more useful features than the Princeton. I owned a blackface Deluxe for years and have played through many Fenders. That Revv is really impressive. Nice Demo.
I have a '73 Princeton Reverb so it was interesting to hear the comparison.
Thanks for watching!!
Thanks for the tips, Shawn. Been loving my D20 for the past 2 years and always understood that it had this "blackface" kinda thing. Never put the drive that low, and it helps with the volume up. With respect - I tried watching the "beers and gear" thing with the D20 and Fender, and honestly it was a bit painful to watch - not that great and a bit boring compared to your takes. I think just driving the D20 with heavy distortion doesn't do it justice. Yeah, yeah, it can do it very well, but the clarity you bring with your settings is ten folds. Cheers and thanks.
Very close sounding comparison though the Princeton is warmer without a doubt. The D20 is an excellent alternative! :)
Love your playing and wish I had your hair!😂
Love my D20!
Awesome!! Glad you're digging it!
what were you recording the amps with ? amazing video!
Shawn when I turn my IR to another IR and then back to the original IR it does NOT sound the same. Why? I have to turn my G20 off and back on to get the IR original tone?
What cabinet did you use on the Revv D20?
On this example, I hear just the slightest bit more of chime on the Princeton. However, that D20 sounds damn good, I mean damn good.
Thanks so much for watching!!
@@ShawnTubbs dude you’re one of my fave players! I got your Tilt. Love it. I like the slight clean bleed through. Great workman’s pedal
@@javymontoya Thanks so much Javier, glad you're digging the Tilt!
I know this is 1yr old but… does it have a transformer “hum” and a “hiss” when the boost is engaged? Mine does and it is quite annoying.
Can you do D25 combo vs deluxe reverb????
I don’t understand- is the D20 going through a cab?
🤘🏻 🌟 🤘
Cool comparison. What cab and speaker is the Revv running through?
Yes- what speaker cabinet are you using with the D20- would be good if you have that in your description
It's hard to beat a pair of 6V6s driven hard. They clean up nicely when you back off the volume so they are NOT a one trick pony. A solid state PS stiffens it up nicely and would be my preference. Does anyone if the D20 uses a solid state PS? Does anyone know what the plate voltage is on the D20? I'm guessing somewhere around 360v?
D20 uses solid state rectification, if that's what you mean by PS (power supply, I'm guessing?) There is no tube rectifier in the tube complement.
I assume for PS you meant power stage? The D20 has a tube power stage with 2x6v6GT tubes. However, if you're using it with the Two Notes software you can bypass the tube power stage and use a model that replicates EL84s, KT88s, and other tubes.
In regards to the D20, If I wanted to run dual mono on the balanced out xlr, could I just use a xlr splitter to the front of the house?
Did you ever find out?
In order for me to own a REV app it has to have 100 w of power in a 212 combo.
That amp, same price as a Princeton (in the US at least - here in Aus the Princeton is almost double the price, the REVV woudl be even more), apart from the two notes extras in it, virtual cabs etc, i dunno why you wouldnt just get a Princeton if you wanted a Princeton sound, it has the accurate circuit out of the box, the Princeton has better note attack and a snap missing on the REVV
Plus:
REVV (with more can go wrong internally) Warranty: 1 measly year
Princeton (that anyone can repair even after) Warranty: 2 Years
Cool! Sounds like you've got it sorted out. Thanks for watching!
I like the princeton a lot, I have an older silverface but your analysis is very strange to say the least. The D20 isn't meant to be a princeton nor is it trying to be, I don't think anyone that is looking at this amp is craving that. This test appears to just show a comparison of how it COULD also cover that base and that part is important to understand before jumping to the conclusion you did.
You also didn't mention with the D20 you get an effects loop, you have the opportunity to run the amp as normal through a cab and with no other gear have a signal sent to FOH that is 100% usable, plus it does you know... many other sounds not just this one. I don't own a D20 but videos like this are helpful for someone like me who obviously loves my princeton but is looking for a solution live that can cover many bases and leave my nearly 50 year old amp at home.
Anyways, great job Shawn thanks for the video.
@@whoisthis5476 Fair, but good luck getting it repaired 5 years from now....
@@ShawnTubbs Sorry, but its a LOT of money here in Australia, hard to go for something that someones going to look at you crossed eyed for asking them to fix in 5 10, 15 years, when the Princeton will (probably) still be ticking along. Sorry if you thought if my original post was a a bit dismissive, but some people, myself included have to save for years for one amp, and repairability in such cases has to be a major determining factor. Always enjoy your playing if that helps and softens the blow :)
@@adrianmiller1971 No need whatsoever to be "sorry" Adrian. I didn't at all take your thoughts to be dismissive.
The Fender Princeton is a highly serviceable amplifier and if that is a major factor for you then you should stick with that amp. It's a really good amp man!
Thanks again for watching and for chiming in.
Dancing around the idea of buying two of these to run stereo. Would love to have one do the Fender thing and one more of a Vox style. Is that possible, or will they only do the Fender thing since it's 6v6 tubes?
The D20 is really voiced more along the lines of a Fender. There are possibilities if you are planning on running 2 D20 amps in stereo direct via the Two Notes embedded software to get one of the amps to sound more Vox-like. Thanks for watching!
@@ShawnTubbs Thanks, brother!
Does switching from 4W to 20w impact the sound, volume and headroom aside of course? I love the idea of running this amp at 4W for bedroom level but I don’t want to have a “degraded” sound quality because of this.
It is just different in the ways you mention. You get that smaller amp sound such as breaking up earlier. If you want the most "open" sound the full 20 watts is best, but if you want the classic "sit in a mix" smaller sound the 4 watts is the way to go. Of course being able to play it at any wattage and volume setting through the Two notes XLR out is a huge benefit because then you can set everything exactly how you want, tone-first, with no volume considerations. You'd be surprised, you might like how it responds in 20 watt mode just with the volume knob lower, the variable wattage option is just that - an option!
@@RevvAmps Thank you very much for your answer. Much appreciated. Would you recommend to switch in standby mode when switching the following features: power (4/20W), pre/post (for Torpedo) and Reactive Load (in the back), or it is safe to do it one the fly?
@ the only time you need to REALLY make sure you are not playing / in standby is when you are changing between the internal load & cabinet load with the switch on the back. Make sure that's in the right position before you put any signal through the amp!!
@@RevvAmps Thanks for the tip. Out of curiosity, why that? What would be the consequences?
@ I’d love to hear the answer for that question. Did you ever find out ?
I'm surprised that they sound that similar, how are they recorded?
I ran both of the amps into my Universal OX using the same cabinet.
I ended up using a 4x10 bassman IR with a Royer 121 / 57 mic combo.
Thanks for watching!
@@ShawnTubbs thanks a lot
@ShawnTubbs Well, that's not a good comparison. You need to record your D20 on its own vs the Fender. Clearly you needed the Irs and Ox because the D20 doesnt sound like the Fender on its own. Use a real cab or into an innerface no OX or IRs then well see. Anyone can use an OX box and IRs to sound closer to any amp.
@@BkBk-gy6vrtotally agree- he needs to pair it wirh a speaker cabinet and compare side by side- if he did- he sure didnt mention the speaker cabinet. Sounded like he was just sending a direct out from the Revv D20 ro an A/D interface into the computer for the RUclips audio. And fhen comparing with a Mic’d Princeton- not a good comparison- if thats the case. But he didnt make it clear.
@@BkBk-gy6vrhe is comparing amps, not speakers/cabs. Using the same speaker is the best way to compare the two amps. The same amp in differents cabs/speaker sounds drastically different
Dude, you need a mic for you voice. It's very uneven between the guitars and voice. I turn it up to hear you then the guitars are blasting. 🙃
So your hair stylist is on vacation?
The D20 can be clean cut or as shaggy as you need it to be.
I've got hair that just don't care!!
@@ShawnTubbs I just started loosing mine. Well it’s migrating to my ears and back for retirement I guess?
Too much hair he says..... me bald
Sounds more dumbley to me
Hmmmmmm.... Maybe.
Dumbley and dumbler. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
