A naked madman who “hated children” burst into an isolated California farmhouse and brutalized five kids, slaying two of them with a pitchfork. Sheriff’s deputies stormed the house and shot Jonathon David Bruce 13 times after three of the youngsters escaped through the windows.

August, my heart is always extra heavy when you come around.. 19 year's ago today our lives took a devastating turn.. A turn that could of ruined us mentally and emotionally as a family. A day that my Siblings and I were meant to expire and draw our final breaths. A day that we as a family will never ever forget.. Although 3 out of the 5 of us survived that day, we continue to ache deeply from the open wounds our heart's endured that day when we found out we lost two of our very own.. The ache is still very fresh and very real, the back flashes are still a reoccurring reminder of the nightmare we endeavored that day. With each new day we wake only to realize it wasn't a nightmare it was indeed reality. A reality that we've had to relive daily for the past 19 year's.. A day that we weren't meant to survive, but God.....He had far greater plan's!!! He orchestrated every escape route, every diversion, every decision, every thought, every single STEP that day!!!
What complete destruction one individual desired to inflict upon us God, turned around and held us up then and He continues to do the very same today!! My heart is extra heavy this month because yes I miss Ashley, and John William, desperately with everything in me but my heart is also heavy for that man's loss. He lost everything that day..
We lost Ashley, & John, that day but we know we will see them again!! We didn't lose, we have victory in Christ, because Heaven is our goal!! I just want to serve as a reminder that God, is faithful in every situation and He is good at all time's and He will see you through whatever battles you're facing, He is so so good!! Our story may have you asking why this had to happen and truth is I don't know the answer but I do know and believe that God, has a purpose and a perfect plan for EVERYTHING we go through and there is not a step that we take that He doesn't know about.. Live your life with a purpose and live it all for His glory!
I'm thankful Ashley, gave her all for me that day and she didn't hesitate for even half a second and even in all the pain she was enduring she never once beckoned to me for help instead she willingly and forcefully told me to "GO....." She gave her all and fought till she couldn't fight any longer.. The very least that I can do is live with a vision and a goal so clear that even my worst of fears become irrelevant..Thank you Lord, for your hand of protection and guidance throughout the hardest time of my life, you've been so so good to me! Thank you will never be adequate enough Ashley, for giving your life for me 19 year's ago on that Wednesday, morning, thank you for loving me enough to say "GO" despite your pain and the suffering you endured! That day you taught me the true meaning of an unselfish sacrifice.. Thank you!

The last plaque with just butterflies on it was a memorial for twin babies the mom lost on August 1, 2001. It said we never held you but we loved you. Another heartbreaking loss for this family.
Ashley was such a a fighter and a protector i know they are resting easy now watching over their family
Thank you Ron for telling this tragic story. I suppose one could say that at least the family did not have to go through a trial, but how the parents coped with knowing this monster must have been watching for them to leave, and then murdered and traumatised their children is beyond imagining. The pain for the surviving family will go on for generations, it does not stop. I wonder if they have moved away from the area, and that is why there are no flowers.
I have read all of Vanessa's words, and how she is rooted in her faith that they are victorious and her generosity to the murderer. His actions must have also affected his children, and how do you forgive a person such as he. Truly, the devil incarnate!

thank you Ron - truly these lives will not be forgotten. In 1964 I was visiting my grandparents as I was a teen and in their attic came across a shoebox of old photos - some of which were of a WWI Doughboy. His eyes caught me and had a spiritual experience in which in my spirit he asked me not to let him be forgotten. I spent most of my adult life doing - researching all about the Battle of the Meuse-Argonne Offensive in France and finding his resting place in the National Cemetery. I have spent so much time with him that when I close my eyes to this world, I pray to open them to see his face in the Presence of our Savior in the next. God bless you and your family.

Thank you Ron for sharing this story. Merced is my hometown! I remember this and I was about 15 years old when this happened. It was both devastating and tragic being from a small city. It shook the entire city! Rip to these two sweet angels, they are in heaven where love is all they have!
This story is so terrible and scary and I marvel that I had never heard it before. I notice that Ashley was a Scorpio; they’re like that. She truly was extraordinary and the little boy was adorable. This story was a fantastic choice because, after we learn of the horror, we also learn that the siblings always will thankfully revere the memory of Ashley and John. What a tragic story, those poor kids frightened and alone that day to fend for themselves. That monster and sicko of a man didn't have to kill any of them. This is probably the most tragic story I have ever heard. It's very heartbreaking. I can't imagine the fear inside those kids and especially Ashley their hero and poor young John. The parents' heartbreak must have also been unimaginable What a beautiful stone for them. I saw on the first stone that it was dedicated to twins that died in 2001. I wonder if those were their siblings too. Geesh, how much more could they take. By the words on the stone, I can feel their strong faith and I'm sure that is what is carrying this family through. On the back of their head stone....2 timothy 4:7-8. So beautiful. They did fight the good fight. For sure.
The big message on the front is about Ashley saving their lives. The smaller plaque on the bottom, tells of twins they lost before they were born in August 2001....must have been a miscarriage. They look forward to some day in the future, being with them in Heaven with Ashley and John. They have lost 4 of their children. How heartbreaking.
I really feel sad for this family having the PTSD that they surely have from all of this horror and mourning the loss of now, 4 family members. First, Ashley and John from this vicious attack, then the twin infants a year later.

How can you ask where was God,we may not question God's decisions or his authority, I lost a son in the prime of his life, I never question God,that is not my place, but I know known that all of it will make sense someday when I meet Jesus face to face.

To believe little Ashley was 10 months younger than me. Little John was a year younger than my sister. I hope the other 3 siblings are doing better today, along with the parents. I held it together until you started to read the surviving sister's letter. It's unfortunate that she had to learn about sacrifices for the people you love in the most brutal way possible. The letter demonstrates she has grown up to be a wonderful woman and someone who her sister would be proud of.

horrible story...but i do not doubt one second that they are both in heaven...Ashley really gave her life for her loved ones..."no one has greater love than to give his very own life for the others";she really understood the meaning of true love...may she be blessed!we can learn a lot from her,she will guard her little brother.I never heard a story about so much bravery of a little girl.Bless you,Ron for sharing this story it gives me more faith in humanity;we can learn a lot from little children!
