Salt & Sanctuary did very well and was widely praised. Know why? Cuz they didnt do "roguelike elements". People loved Dark Souls so they made a 2d game that embodied the simplicity and complexities of Dark Souls without trying to make it different. That's what every game does wrong, they take a formula that has been perfected and try to make it different and it always is a negative draw from the game. Seriously who wants roguelike in this game? I want to make builds and grow with all the stuff I collected.
yeah... it looks like the only thing that this game did correctly was the only thing salt & sanctuary didn't nail down and that is the overall look of this game is easy to look at. It's on sale. I might see if it's worth 7$ this weekend
InfoBroker That sounds really closed minded, and I’m an enormous fromsoft fan. I like having games that take the formula and do it the same way, and I like games that take it and try something new.
100 % agree with you. I love metrovanias , the moment you add the rouge-like element to it , you loose me there. the way I see it , not entirely but rogue-likes defeats the sense of progression that makes metrovanias so addictive to begin with. metrovanias respect your time , rogue-like doesn't.
using salt and sanctuary as a paramenter for metroidvania/souls hybrid in a world where hollow knight exists is kinda funny
the argument of progression is also kinda dumb, the amount of grind and exploits u can do on most souls like defeats the whole argument, the same way that there are people that clear the game with basicly no soul lvl as challenges
its ok for u to not like roguelike elements, but using other games as a comparison is weird
Couldn't agree more. I'm sick of roguelikes and want more progression. Hades is great, but I'd rather have that style of gameplay in an ARPG instead.
Great review as always
This game is absolutely great. Reminds me of the shadow of the colossus. Not a button masher.
Honestly, I'm of the opinion that you either didn't _get it_ or it's just not for you. Most of the things you mention as negatives are part of the game's charm to me.
Thanks for the review
Another good looking game ruined by the need for roguelike to be shoehorned in.
Exactly! I was loving it and than like a light switch I was turned off cuz of ROGUELIKE!!
yep, tired of roguelikes
i played it and it isnt that bad. The cool legendary Weapons, that drop from Bosses are permanently unlocked and can be equiped again, if you die. And that goes for some armor aswell. The original "rogue" took you EVERYTHING and you had to start over, DD is much more forgiving: Bosses stay dead and there are fast Travel Points. I didnt play Dark Souls, but i think this game has a similiar difficulty. You die 10, 20 or even 100 times at a Boss before you finally kill him. But the victory is way more fullfilling too.
Give this game a chance if you like hard, retro-style games, because thats what it is - not "rogue-like".
Yup came here to say that almost picked up since is on sale...no thank you! not a fan of the rogue like bs.! Thank you for saving me a few bucks!
The whole “ lose everything on death” thing is really getting old
Not at all! I understand why some don't like it, but for me, its a huge selling point. It makes me want to perfect my play style and punishes me when I don't. There's no better genre out their, in my opinion.
@@Cryptic-cy3xr out *there*
@@wrosebrock I love out there. I want them to work on a more fleshed out version of it. It has so much more potential.
Ahhh...the new gamer is growing old of challenging results after death.
Playing hours of EverQuest and then dying and even losing a level getting your body back was hardcore and to the point.
I relish the kind of challenge that encourages the player not to die, lest they behold the penalties of true challenge.
It gets annoying, but I like the fact that its similar to old-school gaming.
thank you for the great review
Game looks great.. but you lost me at roguelike.
The problem with this game is definitely roguelike elements, i just hate starting with no weapon at all, and going to blacksmith to get basic sword every time i die. And as a 2D souls like- there are also better games in this genre. Its okay game, but nothing more. There are better roguelikes, metroidvanias and souls clones on the market. Being clunky and not explaining things doesnt help either.
What do you suggest over this? This game is on sale for $5-$6 on PS store right now. Came here to check it out
every indie developer has to make their game roguelike.. It's a copout to make the game seem longer than it really is.
or its because it is a popular genre of games and indie developers make them so they make a lot of money for other projects so get your head out of your ass.
Enigmatic for the sake of it. I also found the gameplay inferior to those that implement a similar mechanic but run a lot more smoothly (e.g. Salt and Sanctuary)
I wish you didn't lose everything when you die. Kills it for me. But maybe I'll still try it.
".. with rougelike elements"
I've lost any interest in this game in seconds
noob(s)
Same, i was thinking on buying this game but after those words, I'll have to reconsider 😆.
What part of Dark Devotion is a Metroidvania?
Reviewer here: I couldn't get into the details with 2~ minutes, but it fits many of the subgenre's staples:
- A single large, interconnected map, generally with discrete rooms or sections.
- Not all areas of this map are available at the start, often requiring the player to obtain an item (such as a weapon or key) or a new character ability to remove some obstacle blocking the path forward.
- Maps are non-linear, and often require the player to traverse the map multiple times during the course of the game.
- Weaker monsters will inhabit other parts of the level, re-spawning when the player revisits those rooms, and often can be defeated to gain health, ammunition, or experience points.
-Access to new abilities can also open up shortcuts that reduce travel time.
bruh this game looks great but the fact that it has that cheap, stupid, annoying fucking darkness effect literally everywhere makes me not want to play it....
What is rogue-like? Are Blasphemous and Death’s Gambit rogue-likes? Cuz I love those games but I hate Dead cells cuz of the procedural generated dungeons
Rouge-like means, that on death you have to start from the beginning, but at the same time you have some kind of progression and getting stronger.
Dark Devotion is not generated. Every room is handcrafted, means the layout is always the same. Your progress is done by experience you can spend on permanent upgrades and plates you can find by exploration permanently boosting your stats.
Palek so it’s like dark souls but without checkpoints
@@ryuken8597 Not exactly.
1. You loose all gear and have to start with gear available at blacksmith (discovered previously in the dungeon, but it is not the best one)
2. You cannot teleport to wherever you want. Only one checkpoint can be active and you have to activate it while in the dungeon. The question is if you want to activate one very close to the boss to get back to him fast with a weak gear from blacksmith, or you know where a nice weapon/armour is hidden in the dungeon to pick it up before the fight nd you activate a checkpoint somwhere earlier. If you want to be prepared as much as you can, you have to know locations of items and plan a longer path before engaging the boss.
Dead Cells is rogue like, Deaths Gambit is not.
Ahh crap I bought this game because of the theme and like metroidvanias. It’s been in my backlog.
I’m just starting and it has roguelike elements? I really hate those.
I’ve been gaming since the 80s so it’s not about the challenge, it makes it a different genre.
Well it’s too late to return it, so I’ll give it my best shot.
Ok I put a few hours into it. It’s not bad, I would have preferred the souls formula of finding my corpse but the roguelike elements aren’t too bad so far.
Hard as nails at the moment, I’m on my first boss. Lost my bastard sword and am stuck with shorter range weapons.
We’ll see how it plays out.
Just got this game on Twitch, didn't realize it was a rogue-style game. Poop.
The only rogue-likes I enjoy are Void Bastards and Dead Cells.
Guess I'll fire up Blasphemous. Been sitting on it for too long, and I need another 2D game after playing through Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth.
Still waiting on GhostSong.
Edit: It's not procedurally generated, okay I'm back on board with Dark Devotion.
How is this a two minute review when the video is 3:14? I call false advertising!
Also, my 2-minute reviews are actually 2 minutes...except when they're longer.
If the actual review content is two minutes, then that'd qualify, even if there is additional video comprising an intro, an outro, or "please subscribe" segment, etc.
Except the actual review content is still longer than two minutes. I watched it.
Might as well call it "Under 5min Reviews"
Imagine crying about something like this
Don’t waste your money on this game its a big disappointing
Here’s hoping the Souls-like hype train passes soon so combat can actually evolve and be fun again. Sigh, this has become the “Generation of the Parry”.
youre not a fan of dark souls are you?
Reviewer here: I am a massive fan of Dark Souls.
A game being Souls like doesn't _necessarily_ make it a good game.
@@kpjlflsknflksnflknsa Except this game isn't really like darksouls. A stamina bar and dodging doesn't make a game dark souls
so... it is another dead cells clone...
not really
gloomy indeed.
Roguelike😑
good boss fight but this game had the worst UI i ever seen hard to read text eye straining map unexplained quest goals
useless collectibles and the worst of all item placement within the game witch force you to use the first one hand sword u start and finish the game with and you wont unlock better one hand sword until you beat the dame game in short the developers say they are inspired by dark souls while i the only thing they implement is pitch black darkness during boss fight nothing else
You unlock plenty of weapons all around the map...?
The first sword in DS3 is best in game just like erm??/?
More like 3 minute review.
who cares, little imp
