Making a pair of Drawknives from a Coil spring

- The continuation of making new tools after moving across the Atlantic and settling in a new workshop in Canada resumes, and there will be more to come. I really enjoyed making these and I'm very pleased with how they turned out. Some people (I could Imagine) probably don't like how dirty the wooden handles already were by the time I was done with making them. However as I'm in a blacksmiths shop, it is almost impossible not to have them get dirty at some point, so I can't be bothered with having to wash my hands in a bucket of cold water every time I want to use them.
Thanks for watching!

Brother, excellent videos, you're one of my blacksmithing inspirations, I'd like to have a workshop like yours
Thank you!
I love how it looks old, and not like it was just made, personally I love that "dirty" Look, makes your tools feel more like tools instead of show art
I kind of prefer to wear them into the used and dirty look. they get that naturally if ya enjoy using them enough.
Enjoyed your video and I gave it a Thumbs Up
So nice. Using them at the end was really satisfying to watch after watching their creation.
Fantastic video and I really like these draw knives a lot. Just a great job. Keep up the good work.
Thank you very much, Appreciate it!
I’m in love with your shop from what I can see of it. Good job they turned out beautifully
Very nice work.
Thanks! Makes me wanna get out there on my pedal driven forge and make something (I just need some spring steel or some high carbon stock, well them's the breaks)
Awesome job man, love the antique look.
Thank you! me too :)

Yes
I've never made a draw knife, although I did get some good insight into the process, at least for me more real time than sped up would have been great in the actual blade forging. I would of loved to have heard your thoughts on the process as well. Like is the fuller necessary or can it be done without it? Please I'm not bashing at all, just making some suggestions you might think about in your next video. Thanks for putting the video out!!
I'm actually thinking about changing the format on my videos for this exact reason. Might try it at one point. The fuller is not necessary, it's just a certain style of drawknife I chose to make. Very simple ones can be made that are just a sharpened piece of steel with a pair of curved handles on them. You're welcome and Thank you!
the new tools
Hey, its me again. I was wondering what got you into blacksmithing?
Noice
You are my favorite vlacksmitg channel thanks for all tge videos i cwnt wait for tge next one. So is your shop a straight blacksmith shop or what is prod uced therw i am curious.
Thank you! It's pretty much a straight blacksmiths shop. I'll be doing some small woodworking projects though. Might do some more stuff outside too once the snow melts.
Why not make the handles on the lathe? I love turning so I might be biased in that direction, but IMO it is so much easier to get a nice shape on the lathe.
I don't have a wood lathe.
You and alec steel should team up
You should do a scythe
He already did
Sorry for the off-topic, but I’ve always wondered why draw knives had handles that were designed so you pull in the exact direction that tries to disassemble the handle. What did they do in the days before epoxy? I’m sure it would be harder to forge, but some kind of T-handle where you are pulling perpendicular to the handle instead of longitudinal would seem to make more sense. I know. I’m insane. Just seems so strange.
Nah man you're not insane, there are draw knives that have the handles attached in line with the blade. As for what they did back in the day: either pin the blades in or make the tangs long enough to peen them over after putting it all the way through the handle. And don't forget: they did have glues back then, so maybe even glued in tangs were a thing, with some pitch or resin for example
I was wondering where do you buy your coal from in Canada?
Don't know. Buying it from the guy who I rent the shop from.
Okay thanks. I will have to keep looking for a a supplier then. I like the knives they are nice they look like they are sharp.
Do you sell these?? If so I am in the US and would love one
Hi Charles, If you send me an email to makencreate@outlook.dk I'm sure we can figure something out :)
You hammer really fast
What kind of work pants do you use?
Carhartt ripstop. They take a bit to get used to and do require a bit of break in in as it's thick cotton duck but other than that they're great.
Can you make flint and still to make sparks to fire starter,,,,,please,,sr
Dude you didnt show us how to uncoil the spring.... how am I supposed to do the rest if I just got this coil I dont know how to fix...

at 3:40 are you using a rasp or just a file?
Just a file.
Wow great work! New sub here and sent you a message asking if you were interested in selling these or if you have an online store to sell your work.
The metal rings are normally used to hold the sleeves. In your case, it's just decoration. It's a shame.
Wrong. They are there to make sure the wood doesn't split when the tang is driven into the handle. Not decoration.
@@MakeNCreate Not decoration ? POV considering this is not their original function...

Kd os brazuka?!
Please forge throwing knifes
I was wondering. There's a RUclips channel that is by Brian Alsruhe. He's building a log cabin by hand and could use a great draw knife. Would you be able to build him one? If so how much if it could be arranged
