So I'm the Mike that asked the question. Some close to me believe that we should only resist the gov very narrowly if we are specifically "forced to sin", and that we should "just preach the gospel." Here I was looking for some guidance on how to articulate that the Christian resisting tyranny is a righteous cause and in accord with preaching the gospel of the kingship of Christ. Interpreting Peter and Paul's writings on gov resistance has become more nuanced in recent years for me and this conversation has come up more and more. Thank you Pastor for your insightful perspective. And thank you all for your comments.

You don’t need “freedom” to preach the Gospel. At least not from the government, because government does not give that freedom. God does. Even if the government “takes away” that freedom, that won’t stop the Gospel from being preached. As a matter of fact, many of the world’s fastest growing churches are in countries where the government is strongly opposed to Christianity and murder Christians such as Iran, Afghanistan, North Korea, China,
Algeria, Somalia, Sudan and the list goes on.

Regarding letting every soul be subject to the governing authorities, in the U.S. the governing authority is not a person, but the Constitution. When a person comes into a governing office, he defers his authority to the Constitution by oath “so help me God.” If that individual does not follow the Constitution, Americans and Christians must resist in order to obey Romans 13 so that the governing authority (Constitution) is obeyed.

You are reading Matthew 24:13 the wrong way.
Salvation is a completely different thing that Jesus being Lord in this life by person's free will to submit to Jesus FIRST and then to whatever other powers may be around in our social structures.
Many people truly have faith but are afraid of consequences of practicing their faith because the circumstances may be too harsh.
A weak faith is still faith, these people will be saved regardless of their failures to put their faith in practice.
On the other hand, people who are strong in their faith and knowledge of scriptures will make Jesus Lord regardless if their lives are in critical danger. They don't stand and shine the light by their own power, they don't pray to Lord God to ease their suffering, they pray to Lord God to give them power to endure whatever suffering comes their way. See the story in Daniel 3 and their Determination was made clear to the King in verse 18.
They knew God is capable, but it made no difference to them if Lord God would choose not to deliver them. They would rather die than disobey Lord God.
When fear is lord, is because people are in sin and disconnected from the comforting power of Lord God.
Confessing our sins immediately as we get the conviction is key in keeping ourselves in good standing with our Lord Jesus and staying fully charged with power of endurance.
      Much love and blessings.

Iunno if this is true... Simply put, JPTG (just preach the gospel) has logical outworkings that result in action and reform… Josiah Rediscovered the lost book of Dueteronomy and he didn’t just let it transform him in an internal personal way. It transformed him to externalize his internal convictions and make reforms in the nation of Israel. I’m not leaning on works righteousness but if we have no impact by what metric are we to measure our successful endeavors? If God gives metrics at the end of each king’s reign why aren’t we?
The government is currently more occupied with shutting down Conservatives, classic liberals, and Republicans rather than CHRISTIANS. Just because we have a lot of overlap we shouldn’t kid ourselves on who is really in the line of fire. Meaning we aren’t really pushing the rock of offense (The Bible) nearly as much as we should, because it’s not convicting enough people in Church to DO SOMETHING about our state of affairs.

4 For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.

We must define the gospel. Plenty of “Christians” preach the life, death and resurrection of Jesus while functionally denying His lordship in many areas of their lives. Not to mention that some professing Christians don't even see the need to go to a church. I think it is a false assumption that “going to church” addresses the problem and, rather, perpetuates the problems between gospel proclamation and genuine discipleship. The solution to this disconnect is more radical and disruptive than most of us can even begin to conceive.

Roman's 13 was written during the reign of a government antagonistic toward Christians, and certainly Peter 2:13-17 was as well. Any rules for government in the Bible are pretty exclusively for Jewish government, although there's plenty of principles there for a Christian world leader to follow if there was such a person. But there are no godly people in power right now. That being said, ALL GOVERNMENT IS ORDAINED BY GOD. Recall the hardness of Pharoh used to show God's great power. God ordained that to be (Roman's 9 says that specially). God gave Jeremiah a prophecy of how he was going to exact judgement on Israel using the evil government of Babylon (Jeremiah 27:5-8). The entirety of Lamentations is the product of God's wrath upon Israel. Revelation is a judgement God has set out for the ungodly in the end of times. God uses evil government for his purposes, the Bible makes that very clear. He likely isn't judging his people specifically, but the only reason this government is here is because God said it would be so. We can cry out to God and pray for him to end the injustice, but we must be faithful to his word. God says vengeance is his, he knows what the world systems do to his people. But God also says submit to the government. We are to be peace keepers. I believe this word is appropriate to be used in this situation, "For this is a gracious thing, when, mindful of God, one endures sorrows while suffering unjustly." 1 Peter 2:19

If we preach a message of 'nice' christianity - where we just want to imitate the 'goodness' of Jesus as something moral, no problem, but if we are saying that Christ's Lordship is alone is what rules (saves) people by justifying them by His atoning work and nothing else, then we're enemy number one. Men want their 'righteousness' to count as the major, however they are seeking to present that. The Lord says that amounts to less than nothing - only the righteousness of His beloved Son prevails. @@amyclutter7259 The kingdom of God, is the gospel from Christ. LATER, he TAUGHT, salvation, and his lordship.
      Gospel first.
      Salvation after.
      Matthew 6:33, 24:14
      Acts 28:31
Most of Christianity, ignores the gospel, according to Christ, and goes straight to preaching salvation, but calls it, the gospel. I'm not confused.

The Kingdom of God, is Jesus's lordship. Think with me for a moment what "Kingdom" means. The King's Domain. The area where the king rules .
Jesus is not merely 'the source' of the gospel, He is the gospel. He is the good news. He's the one who came and showed us all God's heart towards humanity perfectly without deviation. If you've seen Jesus, What he's like, You've seen the Father ( God). He's also our salvation.

@@Wildslayer50 While you are sort of correct, the truth is, HE IS NOT YET KING or LORD. He SHALL be, upon his return, to unseat the current lord of the world. He won't return, until the gospel OF THE KINGDOM, is preached FIRST.
      Matthew 24:14
