K20A2 Oil Pump Upgrade installed on a JDM K24A!

  • If you are putting a K24 engine together or planning a swap, consider upgrading the oil pump. The K24 oil pump is heavy and has balance shafts that rob horsepower. Not to mention, they aren't as efficient at maintaining pressure as you increase your redline.
    Use this video as a general guide, be sure you have access to factory manuals to get exact step-by-step and specs.
    Items we used in this video:
    K20A2 Oil Pump Assembly - 15100-PRB-A01
    K20A2 Windage Tray - 11211-PNC-000
    Windage Tray bolts (x6) - 95701-06014-08
    K20A2 Oil Pump Chain - 13441-PCX-004
    K20A2 Oil Pump Chain Guide - 13460-PNC004
    K20A2 Oil Pump Chain Tensioner - 13450-RAA-A02
    K20A2 Oil Pump Hardware:
    - (x1) 95701-06025-08
    - (x1) 95701-08050-08
    - (x1) 95701-08075-08
    You will need to source a bolt for the oil port
    Be sure to clean the surfaces of the block and oil pan before sealing with Hondabond.

      It was probably pre loosened but I have a weighted socket that actually makes them pretty easy with a nice impact electric or air powered.

    balance shaft is a device to cancel out secondary vibrations only found on inline 4 engines (2000cc or larger)

    Race 2 cars exactly same ,but one with oem oil pump ,second one with type s pump .I tell you ,the oem oil pump car will win.

    I dont get why people are using honda bond to seal the plug bolt.
    Theres a chance it can plug up the oil passages inside the engine if a pc ever comes off inside the hole.
    Just use a copper crush washer on the head of bolt from a banjo bolt for brake flex line.

    That exhaust cam gear on the JDM k24 is 5x heavier than usdm one. I would suggest replacing it too. Did mine when I put in 50 degree intake cam gear and made big difference

    Brilliant vid and saved for when I swap the balance shaft out of my K20Z4 in the near future. Question though, do you have enough bolts off the old windage trays to bolt the new one in or need to order more? The old oil pump had bolts between cylinder 2 and 3 which are no longer used. Do these need replacing? Or just left open?

    I ordered k20a 2 timing chain set the chain does not fit. The k24 does not fit any suggestions

    Question !!!! The bolt you guys put on with honda bond , is that necessary? 😭 cuz all i did was put a lil big of lug tight and screw a bolt in as tight as possible. I did have a thread in there, I know there’s people that dont and have to make one

    helpul video! Question about the windage tray, is it good enough for racing on the road course or should someone upgrade the oil pan with a oil baffle?

      If you are ever going to take the car to a track and oil pan baffle is a must. It's an easy job to install one when the motor is apart as well.

    That's the vtc solinoid in the timing chain cover not a vtc sensor

    Does anyone happen to know what size bolts you have to use with the tensioner because apparently if you buy one from ANYWHERE they don't come with bolts and I don't have a spare K20 just laying around for parts. Thanks!

      If I recall, they are just standard M6 flanged-style bolts. (your normal 10mm Honda bolt)

    Do we need to do this on k24a2 oil pump? Or this is only needed when using k20a2 oil pump?

      You would do these things only when installing a pump that does not have balance shafts.

    I got a question please .. Is it necessary to change the plate ( windage tray) under the oil pump or we can use the A labeled plate only??

      You will need to use the PRB K20A2 windage tray.

      @@kingazhar1212 the oil pump isn't going to allow you to rev higher, per say... however if you do (and have the supporting engine to hold it) you'll have better, more consistent oil pressure while doing so.

      You can use the steel pan.

      It's an M8x1 bolt (regular Honda 12mm bolt)

    Is here any difference on the a2 oil pump and the z1 oil pump? I'll be doing an K24a build this summer and I was wondering which one would be better? The a2 or the z1 oil pump? I'm leaning towards the z1 setup, but was just wondering if the z1 is better or is the a2 better? Thank you in advance to anyone that can help giving some advice.

    That guide allen bolt is not a 5mm. It wants to round it. It's like a 5 and 1/4. 😂 Cause 5.5mm is to big.

    Revving higher or quicker does not mean ,you are going faster ,it's all about torque ,the big pumps with balance shafts produce more torque .

      K24a is the jdm equivalent of the k24a2 out of a tsx. It is the same engine just the jdm version not out of a usdm tsx.

    Can you give a rough estimate of oil psi before and after i did this exact method and i have horrible consistency

      Oil pressure will vary depending on the type and temp. However, peak oil pressure should be in the 75-90psi range. At idle with the engine fully warm, 25psi is about average.

    What RPM would the stock k20 oil pump handle safely?

      Typically we wouldn't suggest revving higher than 8600rpm on a stock pump. The 4PR "PRB" style pump is modified internally, which increases efficiency to 9000+rpm. Keep in mind your oil pan and baffle can affect this as well.

      Since you have to remove the timing chain, you can put at TDC before you begin. Either way, you will need to re-time the engine after the oil pump has been installed.

      Great thnx for the video, I’m in the process right now and it’s very helpful. One other question, can you reuse the oil pump chain? I bought a kit with a new oil pump chain and from what I can count the new one has 32 links as opposed to the original that had 31.
