- Sewing an elastic waistband so that the elastic does not flip, roll, or twist is easy! You do not need special thread or equipment to sew this. I have tips and techniques for you to get a nice finish in today's tutorial.
1. secure your elastic well at the start by stitching in place.
2. use a longer stitch, you can test and see what works well for you. I use 3.5 straight stitch on my Husqvarna Viking.
3. arrange your gathers evenly and then pin the gathers through the elastic in sections so that as you sew you do not end up redistributing your gathers,
4. gently pull the waist so that the elastic is straight, but not over stretched and line the edge of your presser foot with the edge of your fabric and sew. Secure the last stitch.
5. The number of lines of stitching you sew will depend on the size of the elastic. For the demonstration I did three lines, but could have easily only sewn two. I lined me subsequent stitching lines with the edge of my presser foot against the previous stitch line and mostly got an even stitch! It would have been much more even if I were not sewing at a weird angle over the tripod.
The timing couldn't have been more perfect. I'm making a pair of shorts for my husband currently!
Great!
Very helpful. Thank you Christine.
You are very welcome!
Great to see how you do this and you do get a far more professional finish than just elastic 'floating' around in a casing. Thanks very much 😊x
You are welcome! X
Christine! It means so much to me that you addressed my question with this GREAT tutorial.
You’re the best❤
You are sew welcome 💕🪡🧵!
thank you so much for this tutorial!! I've got my pieces cut for a self-drafted elastic back skirt and was having a hard time finding out how to do an elastic back that's sewn down the middle like this. your video was super helpful!
You are very welcome!
Thank You!❤
You are very welcome!
Great tutorial Christine. That’s how I do Sebastian’s waistbands too. I have varied success with it in mine tho. Probably because I need it to stretch more to get over my hips. Your makes are always so beautiful
Thank you! Are you doing any back to school sewing?
@@ChristineSewsALot absolutely none. Unfortunately I just don’t have time
I like that you said it comes out better when you have patience. I believe that is true for a lot of things. You did a wonderful job on the waistband, Christine.
Thanks Zelda. I have loads of patience on the first row, but sometimes on that last row I forget myself when I get to the home stretch

Thank you for your tutorial for sewing elastic waistbands. I always struggle with them.
You are very welcome! Thanks for watching
Great idea. Have you tried using elastic thread in the bobbin for additional stretch?
So far I have not needed that. I do want to try Shirring
I think sewing the elastic this way looks more professional.
It definitely makes it behave!
I see you’re using straight stitch to go around the waistband. I always thought you had to use zigzag🤔
You can use a straight stitch. The trick is to gently pull the casing and elastic from the front and back of the machine until the casing is flat, not gathered. That way when it stretches when you put it on it won’t pop. I also use a longer stitch length. I use this method when sewing cotton pj shorts or knit joggers. These days I use Maraflex on the knit waistband since I am using it on the project anyway - but before I had Maraflex I used my all purpose Gutermann polyester thread. Give it a little test run!
