I agree. This was the most succinct and knowledgeable explanation out of all the elastic waistband tutorials I have seen. And there are a lot of them out there
Bless you. Seriously, blessings on you and your household and everything you love, this is the first time I’ve actually seen and understood how to sew a friggin elastic waistband…I can’t imagine how much elastic and fabric I’ve wasted over the years in vain attempts!! THANK YOU!!!
EXTREEEEEEEEEEMLY EXTREMELY HELPFUL! THANK YOUUUUUU!. Just made my first elasticated waist skirt out of a dress that didn't fit right. I was so sad that I had ruined the beautiful dress when I tried to fidget around with it. And I envied those who can sew. Then out of the blue, (inspiration from above) I decided I should get a sewing machine... and intended to enrol onto sewing classes. Well, today is my 1st full week of owning a sewing machine, and have had 1 class, which just covered the basics so far. EVERYTHING ELSE - 98% - I HAVE LEARNT from folks like you here on youtube and a bit from a booklet. Thank you so much for this detailed explanation. This was my 1st attempt at an elastic band skirt, through your explanation and demonstration, which you did so well. I can now report that I am able to sew ^_^, make an elasticated waistband and ''edit'' my garments. It's still early days, but all this learning from you guys here, has saved me a LOT of time and effort (from hand sewing), and money from having to go to the tailors... and saving me money from going to extra classes. ^_^. SO thank you. :D I look forward to HOPEFULLY one day being a pro like yourselves ^_^ . Well at least being able to make a garment from scratch. That alone will be a wondrous achievement for me. Hugs from the UK.
You are an amazing teacher. You hint every possible question i could have had. Normally I would have to watch multiple videos to learn something but not after yours. Thank you so much. 😀
This is exactly what I was looking for! Had to be something easier than sewing a casing. I'm allergic to both latex and nylon, so I have difficulty with the elastic on masks. Since I've gone to making my own, I needed a fabric overing and this was perfect. I made a couple of changes just for finishing that I thought I'd share since I didn't want the fabric edges showing. For 1/4" elastic, pulled it out to see how long I needed to cut the fabric, and cut the fabric an inch wide. Instead of aligning it to one side, I sewed it just a 16th of an inch to one side from middle and sewed with the zig-zag. Then double folded both edges towards the middle and straight stitched down the middle. That trick with the steam sure worked. I ended up with exactly the size of the elastic I cut and even stretched to the max, it was entirely covered in fabric with the edges hidden. THANKS!!!
I'm glad that you thought this! I was thinking the same. I was thinking "It's 2023 and there has to be something simpler than casing, where you can use what is already done to simplify it." Yay!
This was so helpful!! I am new to sewing and decided to try my hand at lounge pants for my boys. I wanted to find a better way of doing the waistband! Going to give this a try as this is really how I'd like the finished project to be. Thanks a million!!
that was one of the best sewing tutorials i have ever seen. i think i can finish my very first pair of pants now..........thank you so very much. can't wait to watch all of your stuff.
awesome step by step directions sewing elastic waistband without a casing. I tried it and come out perfect. I just wish you had mentioned to use a "Ball Point" needle since your sewing a zigzag stitch, I only know about the correct needle from a different RUclips site.
I am now your subscriber. Thank you for making this detailed video. I have been through five others with frustration, but yours was great! I am a former home economics teacher, but focused my teaching in disciplines other than sewing, so it has been over thirty years since I sewed an elastic waistband; just looking for a refresher video. If I was teaching a sewing class, your video would be my choice to show students as a video visual demonstration. A read model in a black leotard would have been helpful to see how to determine the length of elastic. Your spirit and voice are peaceful, and I look forward to watching more of your videos. You may make sewing a new hobby for me...and I need one other than cooking and baking!!!
And, with this method, you could just put a bit of elastic in the back, instead of all the way around! I like this method! No more rolling elastic waistbands!
Thank you for including measuring the elastic. I successfully attached the elastic but it was too big, no one else mentioned making the elastic 2 inches shorter.
Thank you, this has been very helpful because I have a dress pattern that requires this method of applying the elastic band. However, I don't really like elastic bands sewn this way because I have a store bought dress using this method. Elastic bands get old and loses its stretch..... but after this video, knowing how it's done, it doesn't seem so impossible now to to undo the old and replace with new elastic band YAY ♥
I have an at the knee pair of shorts that has a draw-string that won't stay tied with a bow knot. Elastic is the answer for keeping the shorts from sliding down. The draw-string could be hand sewn in place permanently. Today is the 1st week anniversary of my sewing machine purchase and tomorrow I sew elastic. ✓ Thank You for this video❣️ .
thank you very much! i got myself a dresswich is very loose around the waist and i wanted to try sewing in a elastic instead of just sewing the dress smaller necause i wasn't sire about how to see in a elastic. this was very helpful!
I Have been looking for a good Tutorial to sew an Elastic Band on clothing, in a more professional way .... I'm so Glad I found you! Thank you so much for this wonderful Video! It has Helped me a great Deal, and the results are Amazing! Thank You!!! 😊
thank u soooo much for yr video. yr explanation was in depth and very clear. i always wanted to know how to sew elastic. can u do a video on how to measure and cut armhole. please.
Just WOW !!! I have been searching for this method of sewing elastic into my garments for what seems like forEVer !!! I appreciate your sharing this video with us. I have a few questions though ... Would it be alright if you didn't do the straight stitch over the zig - zag stitch ? Also, with the "very wide" elastics, do you need to put the stitches at both the top and bottom of the wide elastic strips ? Or, would just one row of stitches suffice, being down the middle of them ? I appreciate your advice and help with all this. And, TYSM for sharing this video with us !!! 👍😉👍
In determine how much elastic, make sure you can get it over your hips! Many women have a bigger bottom or belly than their waist, so pin that elastic together first and put it on as you would you pants or skirt to make you can get it over those curves!
Good video tutorial -- even after all these years. Part way thru when y ou mention measuring you waist ... and then "going back a couple of inches" I can't actually see if you're making the elastic LARGER (to allow for side/back seams in a garment) or a couple of inches SMALLER so there's added amount of snug. Hope you or someone can answer.
I would like your advice. I have flared skirts that have elastic thread that isnt elastic anymore and therefore the skirts are way too big. Any help? Great video.
curious if this technique can be used on stretchy knit fabrics as well on a regular sewing machine. It looks like you were using a knit fabric, but not sure.
With all these glowing comments I feel sad to say that your method while its probably great with other fabric and or other elastic did not work for me the elastic remained stretched and di not pop back like you said it would . . . probably my materials different ect. So sad but Its probably good with something else. I was so hoping this would solve my problem fixing the waist band on a skirt. Guess I will try something else I have one more shot at it before i run out of fabric or otherwise ruin the project thanks anyway your video was really clear and good
Great video and really easy to follow. Fantastic to see a guy doing a sewing tutorial honestly because I haven't come across too many of them. Thank you.
At 7:01 "We're going to go back to a straight stitch," this is followed by "We're going to increase the stitch width" at 7:06. Did you mean stitch length? Or is there some mysterious thing I'm missing about increasing stitch width on a straight stitch? A lot of sewing still seems mysterious to me. Thank you.
I tried following pattern instructions for sewing through elastic one time, and what happened was the elastic stayed streteched out after being sewn, and it didn't fit, and there was no 'give' left. From that point on, I have always preferred to put elastic in a casing.
That happened to me last week, but I was determined to figure it out, so I ripped out all the stitches, and watched this and some other RUclips vids, and decided it was a matter of how much one pulled as one sewed. Kind of a feel thing. And I tried it again and it worked.
You are Bob Ross in the world of sewing, I just had a mental breakdown sewing this elastic, hope I’ll make it now
I’m getting into costuming and experienced my first elastic task. It broke me down too. It’s so hard!
Sewing will do that!!!
He is like the Bob Ross of sewing!
thank you so much for the turtorial. Thank you also for not putting music over your voice, this is much easier to listen to just your voice.
I agree. This was the most succinct and knowledgeable explanation out of all the elastic waistband tutorials I have seen. And there are a lot of them out there

"scootch" a highly technical term that makes a fearful sewer relax! thanks.
EXTREEEEEEEEEEMLY EXTREMELY HELPFUL! THANK YOUUUUUU!.

This was THE BESTvideo explanation. Thank you for being so clear and keeping it non chatty.
Well Said!
I've used this technique in the past. HIs explanation is perfect. IMHO, this is the absolute best way to sew a casing.
Hands down, the BEST video for this application!
This was so helpful!! I am new to sewing and decided to try my hand at lounge pants for my boys. I wanted to find a better way of doing the waistband! Going to give this a try as this is really how I'd like the finished project to be. Thanks a million!!

Thank you for your clear and measured instructions. Well done!
Excellent! Thanks for keeping it short and straight to the point.
If I would have known this channel existed I would have never went to fashion school. This was easier than what I was taught

Jesus es mi Salvación ..
Hes such a good explainer
Thank you so much!! I've been teaching myself how to sew and your instructions were the best that I've reviewed...
Very simple demonstration and I really needed it. thank you!
Very helpful Nick. A review confirmed sewing elastic without casing. Thanks!
Excellent demonstration of sewing in elastic in this seemingly simpler manner. You are very clear and helpful in this video. Thank you very much.
Thank you for this tutorial. Just redid a waist with this technique and it was easy and came out perfectly.

Thanks for this technique, Nick! I've watched a dozen tutorials and found myself wishing they explained everything as carefully and well as you do.
Some people are just natural teachers. It is so nice when we find them teaching something we need to learn here on youtube! Much Gratitude!
Another absolute gem of sewing wisdom from Prof King - thank you for sharing this with us!
I love how he said to one's own personal preference. 😍

Great tips I use too.
Got it! Perfect video explanation.
Hi you did a great job... are you able to do the waistband to boxing trunks that would be very helpful
Wow I love stretchy stuff but have such a hard time getting the fit correct- thank you
Love invisible zippers but hate the little pucker at the end. Can't wait to try this. Thanks.
Do you use elastic thread for the lower bobbin thread?
Not in this case.
wondering if this is only for use with knit fabrics, or can it be used with heavier fabrics such as medium weight terry or wool jersey.
Great video. Best to use a color tread for easy viewing. thanks.
thanks ,it was very helpful
After this great instructional video, my brain tells me I can do it! Let's see what my hands have to say😊Thank you!
Wonderful!!! I think I can do this. Thank you!
Wow…so glad I found you excellent
Wonderful, thank you
thank you I'm making a doll for my daughter and the dress elastics are murder this helps so much!
curious if this technique can be used on stretchy knit fabrics as well on a regular sewing machine. It looks like you were using a knit fabric, but not sure.

When you say back 2 inches do you mean make it shorter?
❤ your channel! You are fabulous
Very helpful, thank you.
An awesome treatment.
When you said, "back it up about 2".", did you mean smaller or bigger?
He means that you will make your elastic 2 inches smaller than your original measurement
Great video and really easy to follow. Fantastic to see a guy doing a sewing tutorial honestly because I haven't come across too many of them. Thank you.

Awesome this is wat exactly I m looking for wow thank u so much yipppppeeeeee
Thank you! Just what I wanted to know!
this technique was special. It looks like you are using a regular zipper and placing an invisible pull to it. is this correct?
oh deliciousness 😋, like many others here, elastic too broke me, but thx to this vid i'm no longer institutionalized, for now...
Great video. New subscriber.
I tried following pattern instructions for sewing through elastic one time, and what happened was the elastic stayed streteched out after being sewn, and it didn't fit, and there was no 'give' left. From that point on, I have always preferred to put elastic in a casing.

@@hovawart16 So, did you pull more or less to get the elastic to return to it's original size? Thanks for any help you can offer!
