This video is very helpful for me. I’m in my 70’s and my waist is larger now in proportion to my hips. This is the perfect way to add a bit of ease to the waist on most skirt patterns. Another lesson learned from you! Thank you. 😊
I do this on thrifted skirts too - thrift shops always have tonnes of tiny-lady-size skirts, but no older-child clothes. By adding elastic I can bring them down to fit my daughter and take the elastic out again when she grows to fit them! I love the topstitch-finish method for waistbands and cuffs, it's so much quicker than handsewing, and always looks lovely and neat.
Great idea. There’s an awkward age where it’s hard to dress growing girls. I was in adults clothes at 10 due to my height and I started sewing the next year.
i am a larger woman, and it is SO HARD to find flat front skirts with an elastic back that are mid calf length, but thanks to your tutorial, i was able to make one to match the blouse i made a while back!! THANK YOU!!! im going to sew up an entire wardrobe of these skirts, they are so perfect!!!
That was so sweet that you give and make clothing for your mom! Your mom did a great job, because you are such a sweet daughter! And your mom is just a beautiful as you are. Thank you for this lesson. I know I will be using this a lot!
Another one of your videos added to my favourites! I wanted to thank you for inspiring me to do more hand basting. Every time I get out my needle to hand baste something I think of you :) Yesterday I hand basted some beautiful satin FOE to the neckline and sleeveless arm holes after having to unpick it about 3 times. hahaha I remember you always saying it takes so much less time to just hand baste than unpick later. So true! It's also very relaxing just sitting on the front porch and doing some hand work :) So now I will be doing a LOT more of that. Ultimately it saves time and you get a prettier result. Thank you Katrina!
Karina, I don't know how many times I have viewed this video - I never tire of seeing and hearing your vlogs, especially the ones showing your personal technique in a given sewing dilemma.
So clever of you. I would suspect most of us don’t need any more “pouf” in the front. Terrific solution. Your finishing methods are the best. Thank you 🙏
I am glad to see I am not the only one with the traditional method. I usually hand sew the back of the waistband to get a nice finish but I think I will try your way instead. Thank you for another inspiring video.
There are so many ways to sew and it’s fun to figure out what we enjoy the most. Pattern instructions are a guideline that’s great but changing them is always on the table 😄
You are so clever. I love your elastic waistband idea and I am going to try it. I just bought a pattern and material yesterday for a pair of pants and it's perfect to try the elastic back waistband on. Thank you for all your sewing tips. You are an outstanding seamstress and such a good daughter. I know your mother must be so proud of you.
Excellent suggestions! I've been doing this alteration for my granddaughter's pants as she's so slim. Most fabrics being knits, I cut two little keyholes and insert elastic to tighten the waist band. I used to make tucks, but this elastic method is so much better.
Commenting to say that of ALL the videos on this topic that I have bookmarked, yours in the one I go to over and over when I am struggling or forget what to do. Legit this is like at least the 10th time. Thank you SO much, you speak clearly and you don't use goofy gimmicks just good clear information and beautiful clothes😭making my 3rd skirt with this tutorial. Mine are messy but I get better with each one.
I've been putting off sewing this type of waist band due to the ridiculous difficult pattern instructions. Your way makes much more sense, is easy to do and looks good. I'll be trying this soon. Thanks.
I’ve never really understood the idea behind over complicated pattern instructions 🤷🏻♀️. Frequently some steps can be so simple and have great results like this 😄. Thanks for watching 😊.
I love this technique, and I have used something similar before, this is so much better than stitching in the ditch, and the result looks much better and your stitching finishing everything so well.
Stitch in the ditch is okay sometimes for some fabric and styles but definitely not my preference if I have the freedom to choose 😄. This way looks so wrong but feels so right lol
Thanks so much for this vid! I'm a sewing my son's uniform pants and wondered how to add elastic to the back. This is SOOOOO much simpler than what I saw.
I love an elastic waistband since menopause. Sometimes, though, I like my pants and skirts to not look like the standard elastic waistband. This way is brilliant. Thank you.
Attaching the waistband so you can topstitch and see what you are doing makes perfect sense I will always do that in future. I can’t wear a full back elastic because I have a swayback but I have RTW trousers with elastic at the sides that fit me comfortably so that is perhaps the way for me to go. Great info as always. Thank you.
I have to let you know I have just finished a button up skirt with your elastic waistband and it is great. I can't wait to make another one! Thank you!
Beautiful waistband application! Basting in place helps keep it all together. Sometimes I forget to do it, Thanks for reminding me to do it 100% of the time. Great compliment from Mom to want your skirts, look so great on her!
Need to do this on several of my summer trousers. Have been postponing that chore, but you’re right, it’s such a simple fix. Thank you for showing how you do it. Thank you for the encouragement. Hope you recover soon for your ear infection. My Christmas was spend in bed with a nasty 🤒 🤧🤕. 😙💕
Nice video. How sweet of you to make clothes for your mum. She looks great modelling I think your technique would easily apply for elasticized waistbands on the hips/sides only. I have often seen it on pants and skirts.
Karina, oh I love the idea of sewing on the waistband the way you did because I always have difficulty just as you described!!! Thanks so much for your better method!! Take care and God Bless.
Thank you again Karina for another helpful video :) I searched "sewing elastic to back waist band only" and of course your video popped up! I have a pair of linen pants (RTW $$$) that I've had for a few years and the elastic in the waist band just stretched out and stayed that way :) So I decided to sew elastic only to the back instead of all around. I had some ideas but I think yours is much better :)
Ditto Robin Duggins! Also, I had never seen a waistband put on this way, so I watched your video on it. I agree completely with how you do that. So much easier to be able to see what is happening!! Thanks so much!
Thank you so much for sharing this idea! I lost so weight and I have a few skirts that I could use this elastic in the back to adjust the fit. It’s a brilliant idea!💕👍🏼💕
Wonderful technique! I am going to draft a pattern for tap pants for my sister and use this clever, very professional technique for the waistband. Thanks for your generosity, and your mother makes an awesome model, by the way! Love her skirts!😊❤️👍🏽
My granma gave me her old chiffon skirt which I want to wear but I have to put new elastic in, since the old one is in shambles. The skirt the exact waistband you showed, and I'm gonna use your technique, only by hand. Thank you!
Thanks so much for the tutorial. I love gathered skirts, but with waist fluctuations, I'm always frustrated that skirts I make are always a little too big or a little too small. This would eliminate that issue. I can do a gathered flat front, and an elastic section at the back, pretty seamlessly. GREAT tutorial!
This is such an obvious way to sew on a waistband but I've never thought about it - thank you so much! I might try this method for other applications such as where you're told to stitch in the ditch....not my strong point! I always have to add elastic to the back of my ready-made jeans - with those I have to cut a couple of vertical slits to get the elastic inside. Then I zigzag over them and the elastic. Not particularly neat but no-one can see it!
Great solution too and when no one can see 😉... it’s all very cool. Denim is super hard to unpick too! I’ve broken my share of seam rippers while doing that 😃. Thank you so much for watching.
Hi Karina, Brilliant idea. I’ve lost so much weight that most of my skirts are now too big, so I’m going to follow your advise and insert elastic into their waistbands. Happy New Year and I hope your ear continues to get better. 🤗
Thank you! Bulky elasticated waistbands are such a problem for mebecause they add so much bulk right over my stomach, where I don't need it. This way, I can have a smooth, flat front without sacrificing comfort. I'm especially grateful for the instructions on how to do the same thing with the skirt I already have. I'm going to be doing that with every skirt I own! I'm 80 and living on a very restricted income, barely making ends meet; I've watched your patreon video and unfortunately I just can't squeeze out $5 a month. However, I can and will drop some money into the coffee mug whenever possible,
I love how you attached the waistband! I always have issues with the finish garment not looking as neat as I would like, definitely going to try this on my next project. I also like the look of the half elastic, clean and neat in the front but with the elastic it gives so much more flexibility during those times of the month or even early pregnancy 💜💜💜
Very helpful! I just bought some wide leg pants very similar to the culottes to see if it’s something I would like before I made the full length ones myself. The ones I bought are a bit big and have elasticated back so I’m going to just open up that side seem and shorten the elastic and probably add some pockets cause that’s always a must!
I don't know how to use a sewing machine or even a needle and thread really, but by viewing the video I have an idea what is involved when I take my jacket into the tailor. Thank you.
I'm definitely going to go do it your way right now! I've got a pattern that does it the other way round but I knew I wanted to check with you first!! Thank you!!
I have bigger hip to waist so pants gap in the back. Take ready to wear jeans or slacks sneak elastic in the back. I give myself a bigger end gap to get safety pin out then sew it up so all good.
Hi Karina, i have this pattern since two years ago, but not yet sewn...thanks a lot for your tips and love the result. i will do the same . Merry Christmas and happy new year. kisses
Your a genius! It’s so frustrating for me and my skill level when all these patterns want you to do top stitching but trying to catch the inside seams it can be short but I also sew too much of it and it leaves a weird flap of fabric on the inside. It’s never consistent on the inside, which really makes it look homemade and lower quality IMO.
I've been wanting to try this technique on my next pair of pants as it seems the waistband would be less bulky than with all over elastic. A bit more flattering and folding the waistband over from the back is a super idea. Thanks so much and a very Happy New Year to you and your family. Safe travels back to Brazil.
I'll give your method a try on my pull-on crepe pants! I will post photos to Insta when I'm done! Oh, wanted to mention, when I add elastic to an existing waistband, I'm extra lazy -- I don't open the stitching on the waist, I open the vertical seams. I shove the elastic in on one side, fix it, then thread the safety pin through to the other side. Then I stitch down the side seams again. So I typically don't undo the seam that's parallel with the ground because I don't like my handiwork when I stitch it back closed. If I'm making a skirt for someone and I don't know if it's their measurements exactly (uhm, exactly elastic waist?!) then I leave one of the vertical seams unstitched enough so they can pull out the elastic and adjust it if necessary. There are four daughters and one mother in my family, so pretty much every garment is gonna fit s o m e b o d y, but we do love to finagle so I tend to make it a little easier on the person who will modify it. :D
I measure the front waistband.... compare it with my waist measurement minus 3”and cut the difference for the length of the elastic. For example: my waist is 34”, the front measures 17”.... I want the waist to be 31” with the elastic inside, so I’ll cut the elastic at 14” (17 + 14= 31”). Just an example... it’s personal preference. Sometimes I’ll cut the elastic shorter if it’s a stretchier type....
@@LiftingPinsandNeedles thank you so very much Karina for letting me know. I am going to write this down so I can reference it. You are so generous and a fabulous inspiration to me. I have been sewing garments again for the first time in many years! My grandmother taught me as a 5 year old, and now I am teaching my daughters who are 21 and 23. Much love from Sydney, Australia xxxxxxxxxxxx
@@LiftingPinsandNeedles it really is fun to teach them and see how excited they are. I did teach my girls and son when they were that age to sew quilt blocks. It is one of the family quilts to cuddle under in the lounge room!! If you have a speed adjustment on your machine then set it to the slowest setting. Then no matter how much they push the pedal the needle will never go too fast for them. An awesome skill to learn and share xx
1:24 Hello! I’m new to your channel and I’m looking forward to seeing what you have here. Regarding your comment about the ear pain and rather having a baby naturally I have had different kinds of severe pain in my life and I usually say the same thing. I’ve had four children without pain medications and I figure that at least at with that pain you get a nice little baby. Lol
Welcome to the channel! There over 350 videos here :) I’m a midwife and am super familiar with birthing naturally and the sacrifice it takes to have a baby in the end... so worth it. The earache on the other hand 🤯....
This video is very helpful for me. I’m in my 70’s and my waist is larger now in proportion to my hips. This is the perfect way to add a bit of ease to the waist on most skirt patterns. Another lesson learned from you! Thank you. 😊

such a clever way of sewing on a waistband!

I like your thinking! I was unhappy with the finish of the Winslow hack, but am thrilled with the way this waistband has come out. Kudos!
Love the way you think out-of-the-box! Ingenious!
Thanks! I’m always looking for ways to make sewing more practical :)
Your method makes total sense and looks great. Thanks for your tip.
Very nice technique for flat front and elastic back.
Thank you so much 😊. It’s a nice way to do it and easier than instructions I’ve seen in diverse patterns.
Thank you so much, it feels like we're sisters cos this is how i alter my waistbands always... even for my siblings.
Awesome! Practical and easy.
I love an elastic waistband since menopause. Sometimes, though, I like my pants and skirts to not look like the standard elastic waistband. This way is brilliant. Thank you.
I’m the same. I don’t enjoy a full elastic and prefer a yoga waistband or this method best. Comfort is key :)
Thanks for watching 😊.

Love the way you did the waistband.
Lady9tails I love it too!
Thank you so much 😊
Thanks to you, I hand baste now! It is faster than ripping out a wonky seam!
Oh yes! It’s taken me 30 min to seam rip versus 2 minutes hand basting... plus sewing without pins is so nice and faster too :)

I've always hand sewn waistbands down on the inside. It looks good on the outside, but not so good on the inside. I'll definitely try this next time!

Love this technique for the waistband. Since following your vlogs, I have started to bast which is so much better than pins! Thank you!
Basting has its advantages and critical areas turn out so good. I find that more basting means less seam ripping 😄
Super super super as always 👍👍👍
🤓🙌🏻👍🏼Brilliant technique. I'm getting ready to make a pair of pants and I will be doing it this way. Glad you are feeling better.

I am sooo glad I found this tutorial. I have a few wonderful Style Arc pants that I am stuck on! Thank you for another great video

Yay! Have fun.
Hi I’m sorry I just saw the video was from 2 years ago! And I have just discovered Your channel and I can’t wait to watch all of them thank you
Welcome!! there is so much to see!
Very smart way to do the waistband! Thanks for sharing this! Hope your ear heals up quickly.
I usually need to add elastic then the back of most of my off rack pants. It makes the waist fit so much better.
What a wonderful daughter you are too.
Thanks so much, she deserves it all 😀
Great tips , makes so much more sense to do it your way! Thank you😊
What a great idea. It looks so much better!!
It’s nice and neat and comfy. The best of everything 😄
Thanks alot for this super awesome and clear sewing tutorial 💯🙌🏿. Will the trying it now.💖
Karina, you are so smart!! Happy New Year!
Aww thanks 😊. I just love sewing too much and am always thinking how I can sew in a way that’s more practical.
I'm making pants this week, going to try this! Thank you , you rock karina!
Oh, my! How awesome is that! Thanks for sharing.
You make sewing waistbands easy. Could you make a playlist? I think I missed some.
I don't know how to use a sewing machine or even a needle and thread really, but by viewing the video I have an idea what is involved when I take my jacket into the tailor. Thank you.
I hope you give sewing a go someday. It’s fun :)
OH I NEEDED this! thank you! I just need to binge watch your vlogs! I hate some material in a full elastic waist
Thanks so much for this brilliant tutorial
Great waistband techniques.
Thank you so much 😊. I’ve put a lot of thought in these things over time and have my preferences :)
Espero pronto estés bien y una muy Feliz Navidad y mucha salud en Año Nuevo!
Muchas gracias. Estoy mucho mejor y cuidándome mucho el oído de no mojarme en la ducha 😄
great idea! I have several linen slacks which can use this modification! Thanks!
Such a clever idea! Thank you!
I'm definitely going to go do it your way right now! I've got a pattern that does it the other way round but I knew I wanted to check with you first!! Thank you!!
Thank you for sharing this method, it looks so professional. I will try this with my next pants make. :)
All the best. I really like doing it like this
I Love you r hand basting and great way of adding elastic to the back, new and ready made
It really is a great fix for slightly big clothes :)
Thanks for watching 😊.
Thank you. I've been looking for an easier tutorial for this kind of waist band.
So sorry you were sick. Thanks for the tips!
I have bigger hip to waist so pants gap in the back. Take ready to wear jeans or slacks sneak elastic in the back. I give myself a bigger end gap to get safety pin out then sew it up so all good.
Im glad this works for you :)
Hi Karina, i have this pattern since two years ago, but not yet sewn...thanks a lot for your tips and love the result. i will do the same . Merry Christmas and happy new year. kisses
Thanks so much for this tutorial....super helpful xx
Great tutorial 👍
Thank you so much 😊
Wow this is really helpful! Thank you for the informative video!
Great tutorial, exactly what I was looking for. Thank you
Your a genius!
Brilliant idea! Thank you for sharing.
Im glad you like it :)
I love the way everything you do is so unique! Very neatly done thanks for the tutorial ❤️
Thank you so much 😊. It’s great fun to sew freely like this :)
Thank you !! this really helped me !!
Glad it helped!
This was genius. Thank you so much.
Needed this waist band fix thank you
I’m glad this is helpful. Thanks for watching 😊.
Very clever, no one will ever know how we actually sewed the waistband!! How did you work out the length of elastic to cut please?
How amazing. It’s my dream to teach my nieces someday. The older one is already a bit interested at 5 😄.
Lovely content as usual. Hope you are back to good health soon
love this video! Would you be so kind to share how to measure the length of the elastic needed for such a pattern (elastic at the back only)?
Love this waistband application.
Sorry you have been ill. I got ear infection on Christmas Eve, too.
Feel better soon. Happy new year.
There over 350 videos here :)
I’m a midwife and am super familiar with birthing naturally and the sacrifice it takes to have a baby in the end... so worth it. The earache on the other hand 🤯....
