Prepared this for dinner tonight. I was skeptical with all the tomato, but it was a big hit!!! Paired it with some cornbread and salad and voila! Delicious meal. Thanks, Kaleb. 😊
My mom always called me when she made this after I left home so I could come eat my all time favorite meal!! I miss my mom & her amazing cooking skills!💞💞
I'm Chinese and I love learning American recipes from your channel. Everyhring looks so delicious! I spent part of my childhood in the Midwest but didn't experience much of the food back then :)
My mom made this way back in the 50s when I was a child growing up in Iowa. This is going to be our Christmas Eve meal! Thanks for the special touches on this old tried and true recipe. Merry Christmas!
Love your recipes and follow you on Facebook ! I just made this and OMG, so good ! I am typically not big on tomato based foods but the beef stock balances perfectly !
your plate looks so scrumptious! I grew up with this dish and let me tell you I don't know how I forgot this goulash. This will be our week end dish once a month. 😋thank you for all you do for us. Love your videos. sometimes I binge watch. lol. well, have a wonderful week.
My family does the same we add beans kidney beans I don’t know why any other bean would not work and celery and red peppers the more you add the better the flavor
I just Love your videos short and long! I’ve learned so much from you. And you are a delightful, handsome and knowledgeable person! Thanks so much! I made this goulash and it’s become my husband’s Favorite Meal!!❤😊😊😊
My momma's recipe. 1 lb. Gr beef, macaroni, pork and beans, onion, tomato soup, (1/2 can) diced tomato, ,red and yellow bell peppers, S &P garlic salt, hot pepper flakes, spoon or 2 of brwn sugar, a small hunk of hot pepper jack chz., Cook the beef. peppers and onion together and macaroni alone in a pot and then dump all in together to meld on low for 15 -20 minutes. Corn bread goes well with it and a banana & lettuce salad topped with dressing made with milk and sugar added to the M Whip. Apple crisp topped with home made whip cream for dessert. Now THAT is an Iowa home made comfort meal on a Winter day. 😊
I bet a little sour cream would be good on top too!!! My mom would make that all the time. when we were kids I didn’t appreciate all the tomato flavors lol like I do now and adding the cheese is amazing she didn’t feed us goulash with cheese she also does her own Italian version with out meat but with cannoli beans omg I would hide mine in many napkins and run to the bathroom flushing several times lol but now I actually like it and I’m still not a big fan of the beans but when my mom makes it or instructs me how to make it so much more flavorful. Oh gosh guess goulash is going to be made for dinner this weak! ❤😂
this was a staple when I was growing up, too. My mom did a lot of spaghetti, goulash, meatloaf, mash potatoes and scrambled eggs. My dad did the grilling and made a mean cowboy breakfast!
I make this about once a month, kids used to put extra cheese on it, kids are all grown and gone, but my husband and I still enjoy a good comfort food dinner.
One of the few meals I did not like growing up. It always started with boiling the ground beef in the microwave 😒 This however looks amazing! I am going to try this for the family.
The American version is totally different from the one I had growing up. My parents were from Germany and my mom cooked a lot of German, Hungarian and French food. I will try this one, it’s a lot less work!
Love everything you do..Caleb! I live in Iowa too...Northwest part of the state...I just preordered your cookbook! En joy this beautiful Fall Iowa weather!!!!
Could I ask where you got the wooden spatula.? I Love it. I am a new subscriber. Just found you a few weeks ago… I’m trying to catch up. I’ve been watching all your videos. Love your channel!! And all your content.
my mom made goulash pretty much weekly but she did it a little differently I don’t know where it came from but we loved it and that if we do it the normal way but we added kidney beans you could add any kind of bean to it it adds fiber and it adds flavor it’s delicious you must try it drain your beans if you’re doing it out of a can and add it you’ll never do it old way it is the old way for me my dad was from Michigan and my mom was from Oregon the combination of flavors I have no idea
100% Italian here and never heard of goulash but ...Excellent! Correct paste needs to be fried before adding liquid...I would have added some water before the dried pasta not just beef broth...to give the paste room to move
I love your recipes, but could you give us the amounts of herbs and really amounts of everything, and the temperature of the oven and how long to bake for the casseroles, but I really do love your presentation and explanation of everything, thanks
In Boston parochial schools in the 50s and 60s, we always waited for the once a month where the nuns served it in the cafeterias. Can you say "Double order please?"
yes you can use a cast iron skillet. I recomend it. I raised my kids using cast iron. And made goulash on it. They're both over 40 and fine. Me too. :-)
@@PK-bh1ww I agree I make mine in cast iron. As long as it is a well seasoned(used 2+ months) pan. I cook cast iron almost every day. As long as your not cooking the tomatoes for hours you should be all right. When I cook this dish it takes maybe 40-45 minutes leisurely pace
depends on where you are. it's known as Chili Mac, Beef-a-roni, American Chop Suey and American Ghoulash. my Mom made this a lot for and my 3 brothers. my Dad hated it! so he usually had steak and eggs instead(too grown up for pre-teens in the mid to late 1950s). I still love it, but instead of ground meat now I prefer chunks of meat(like European Ghoulash, Beef is my fav but pork or chicken will do. I let the chunks stew a little in the tomato sauce 20-30 minutes more than the recipe calls for). Served with good bread and some veggies(salad, three bean salad, succotash, a veggie medley or baked beans)still makes me dreamy eyed. price wise, time wise, flavor wise I'd pick this over steak everytime(I do like steak tho). not having had the fortunate route in this life, I prize budget friendly and tasty meals. And there are tons of them all over the world, because there have always been peasants lookipng for nourishing, budget friendly, tasty meals. Thank God we have history and can see how they solved the problem with the recipes they handed down to us, that we will pass along too

I live in a Hungarian community, goulash is a traditional Hungarian meal and it is not made like this and has to be served in a bowl. I'm sure you could find the recipe on line for the proper way to make it.
I think everyone was making this meal in the 70's. It's a Comfort Food.
My step mom made goulash alot. It was good.
My beautiful grandmother's made it when I was 2 yrs old, and I was born in 1954, Lol

Goulash! Comfort! I grew up with this in Illinois. Never had it with cheese. Perfect addition!
huh? you gotta have cheese. omg in Montana thats the way how!
The goulash is amazing! thank you for the recipe👍👍👍💙
GOULASH is the best!!! 😋 thanks for the recipe ❤️😊
A great receipe! My family loved it. I added some red pepper flakes. I had to "use what I have" as Kaleb says and use rotini pasta.
I add the same flakes and rotini. And I don't use tom paste (eew) I use tom soup instead.
My mom made this way back in the 50s when I was a child growing up in Iowa. This is going to be our Christmas Eve meal! Thanks for the special touches on this old tried and true recipe. Merry Christmas!

I grew up on goulash too in fact I just made a pot of that last night! 😋 Different version but still good though yours looks very interesting!
I just retired, and I want to have some fast go-to meals to take to people now that I will have more time. This looks wonderful and easy. Thank you.
I would love to just come spend time in your garden and kitchen.
Me too
What a great stove and you keep it so clean!
I haven’t made this in years-I definitely will make it now!

My mother made goulash as I was growing up. It was different from your recipe but we are from Texas. However, she was still a good viking!

Goulash is also a Hungarian spicy stew.

all that info is below the video.
Goulash for us, was a leftover thing. Whatever was available with beef. And no cheese. This is much better 🙌🏻😋
ummmm Yes!...😊
😋 yum!❤
When I was little we'd have a dish similar to this - but we called it Beef-a-roni Casserole
Yum!
Do you deliver the leftovers to your Mom? I know I'd love to get this meal as a gift.

Can you use a cast iron skillet for this recipe? Or will the acidity of the tomatoes react with the metal?

You’re so cute hun and yes your cookings great
As a Hungarian this is hard to see as goulash lol
I absolutely agree with you! :D
I like to add peppers to mine .
tell me about that lid!!
In parts of Ohio they call this chuck wagon chowder and put slices of cheese around the top.
We call it American Chop Suey in New England. It was a tad more boring than your dish, but we loved it!
I love a big pot of American Chop Suey. It flys out of the refrigerator! Everyone loves it.
I Made this but for me it has way to much tomatoes base for me, it needs a beefy favorite to it, I will try this next time
I was always told no tomatoes in cast iron? or am I cray cray?

I have to have green bell in my goulash, but I know you dont like green bell. That's OK!
pasta and cheese and ground beef
don't tell Hungarians.
I make the best goulash in the universe. 😂👍
Dam....thtz 2 "tomatoey"!😑
