    something you said about bringing up the past REALLY reminded me of the situation here in South Africa. The Apartheid regime ended in the early 90s and in 1994, South Africa had its very first democratic election, resulting in the country's first black president (Nelson Mandela). I'm a 22 year old Congolese immigrant who has lived here since 2003 and the amount of times white South Africans my age have said that black and brown people need to "let go" of the past and "move on" is beyond quantifiable. ALL of my peer's parents were raised during the regime, and witnessed the bloodshed and extreme racial segregation. Again, the regime ended in the early 90s.

    • @Mila-Rosa
      @Mila-Rosa 8 месяцев назад +139

      I had a conversation/debate with someone about the whole 'get over it. It was ages ago' talking point.
      It basically boiled down to "If we're still feeling the effects of it, then is it really over?" Yes, the segregation and dehumanization of black people is no longer state sanctioned (in theory, but that's another topic)... but they're still experiencing those very real issues today. And by telling black people to get over it, you're ignoring their lived experiences and the role you play in the normalization of those experiences by basically claiming there's an acceptable amount of racism and black people don't get to be upset about it until it hits a certain threshold.
      EDIT: So I unpasued the video, and Khadija basically said exactly this .5 seconds later lol

      Don't come at me - I know it's not as commonly seen/talked about as it is when it's us, but it does happen. In this case, it's more North or West vs South. Hell, even South vs South, honestly. "OoOoOo, YoU sPeAk So WeLlllll."

    What you said about while liberals and guilt is very true. When I first started getting into social justice stuff constant guilt was my MO until the day I realized that all that guilt was pretty much self serving, I didn't want to feel bad anymore so every action I took was to aleviate myself from that guilt and not to actually fight oppression or uplift the people who need uplifting, I was only listening to my own hurt and nothing else. I managed to snap out of it when I realized all that, stopped feeling guilt and just started feeling anger at it all instead and it made me a much better activist. Thing is not everyone gets out of the guilt phase. There's whole industries out there centered around nursing and profitting off that feeling of guilt.

    • @Ophelia381
      @Ophelia381 8 месяцев назад +64

      @@32Theresa Hmm I am not sure how to describe it exactly but basically, think of it like a corporate setting that holds sensitivity workshops, right? Now I am not saying that those are bad, it's good to talk about those things, but also a lot of them are kind of...designed to come back every year so to speak. You present the subject, the whole room talks about how they understand things much better and then they'll go about their day, forget it and feel like they are a good person for having gone there. It assuages the guilt a little bit and when they feel bad again, they sign up for the next workshop.
      Thing is, a lot of those are designed so that you don't really advocate for any actions that could change the systems of oppression. Because if you do change the system, then the industry can't exist anymore. You have to keep people in sort of a middle ground where they feel guilty enough to always go to these kind of events to feel better about themselves while similarly making sure people don't do the hard work that comes with decolonizing your mind or breaking off the generational chains of prejudice or getting involved into local activism because then, you don't really need those kind of things for validation.
      That said this is a really imperfect way of talking about it. The reason I struggle is because there are a million things that goes into this. For example, I do think that ultimately it's better to have people willing to educate people on this than to not have any since the alternative is just letting prejudice sit in workplaces or public spaces. The issue isn't with like, hiring people to talk about these things or hold these events, it's probably because these kind of events are generally too brief to really get into the important stuff and don't really advocate for a way to deal with white guilt in a healthy way that helps you become someone that fights for a good cause instead of someone that just seeks to aleviate their guilt and pain. The idea that there is an industry that has an interest in keeping white guilt going is also part of it for sure but it's not like you can't find people who advocate for activism and doing the hard work needed to become better allies (one of my friends is precisely one of those people) but they also don't get hired as much because the more radical the message, the more uncomfortable people get and the more pushback these kind of things go, meaning the more digestible, surface messages are the ones that are sought out by employers and such. To find workshops and such that will help people become better allies, you kind of have to go to the ones that are held by people passionate about it, held on their own, where the people there will ask you to listen and challenge yourself, who will say unpleasant things that you have to face, deal with, absorb and channel into something productive. Sometimes yeah, that industry will lead to people seeking out others that will tell them more so sometimes, it can be a pipeline towards getting rid of guilt and working for actual changes but more often than not, things just kind of stay the same.
      The other part of this that needs to be taken into account is that a lot of the time, those workshops are actually held by bipoc or queer folks and to that, I don't really know what to say. Can I fault a bipoc person from getting a check from their oppressors? Or a trans person doing the same? I don't think I can. You gotta survive on capitalism and you get a paycheck from it with the hope that maybe you'll trully change someone's mind at some point too. Like, despite my issues with this, I want to make it clear that I don't think the presenters or the people holding those workshops are bad people or that they want to perpetuate this or that this is necessarilly calculated. I think most of them are trying to do good and do want to lead people towards liberty but the people and systems in place don't want to get more than tolerance. And don't get me wrong, an employer does see the benefit in using this as a band aid because they want a workplace that is docile where people aren't rude to each other, they don't actually want one where people do the really hard work of digging deeply into their preconceptions and prejudice because that might foster things like worker solidarity or organizing. That said it could also simply be that the owner or leader is a well meaning white liberal who thinks they are doing a good thing by setting all of this up but is uncomfortable with the harder messages or the ahrder work that comes with like, shaking off guilt and getting ready to fight for real for liberty. Often these bosses suffers from white guilt kind of stuff themselves and setting that up makes them feel better too.
      I hope this makes sense. I'm trying hard to convey all of this but I also feel like I am leaving a lot of things on the table when it comes to this discussion because often, there's degrees to it, there's context, there's a lot of intricacies and I'm always worried I'm gonna forget something important or crucial in explaining it because I have pretty severe adhd and my brain is often chaotic. Like there's also people who are actively grifting in this, people who pretend to be hosting inclusivity workshops but are actually pushing other agendas, I'm also leaving out people who can channel their guilt in a productive way because, of course that is possible. I'm leaving out a lot of things but this is already a long comment and I am pretty nervous talking about all of this on the internet.

    One of the best comebacks imo to "slavery was so long ago" is Dave Chappelle's reply to that. He said something along the lines of slavery being 3 ppl ago. A lot of ppl like to think of slavery being so long ago bc they think of the start date. But reality is when it actually ended in America, it wasn't that long ago. Chappelle's great grandfather was a slave. That's 3 ppl before him. A lot of us has had the pleasure of our great grandparents being in our lives. @@TheNewblade1 well, why are you holding the door for women? Is it because you hold the door for ~any person~ who's behind you? In that case it might ~appear to others~ like you're doing it for women in particular, but you're actually not. But if you do hold the door for women ~specifically~, because they're women, then sure there are questions about why you do that! If you're doing it "because you want to", well WHY do you want to? You can't easily separate that attitude, that tendency etc from the society you grew up in, and the messages it pushes onto people, encouraging certain values and behaviour, giving people certain experiences, and so on
      We're all a product of the environment we grow up in, y'know? And if you don't like the idea that you're doing it "because that's what men are supposed to do" then you need to do some honest reflection - and if it turns out you are influenced by that, you need to make a conscious decision to change your behaviour. None of this is a bad thing! It's growth. And the same goes for things like having a saviour complex - you need to look at yourself honestly and work out what's motivating you, if there's any part of it that's actually less than good, if you've been doing harm when you really wanted to help, putting your wants over others', deciding for them what they need. It's not an easy thing to do, but it's important
      The difference here is the dude is outright saying he has a saviour complex (I dunno what the comment above is talking about, he says it at 16:27 while answering the question about whether white people have a saviour complex). There's no misinterpretation here! He's done enough reflection to realise he has one - but he thinks it's a good thing. He literally sees it as a virtue, and he's proud to present it to everyone. What he's being criticised for, is that this attitude is not actually a good thing to be embraced. The thing he feels good about is problematic, and accepting that and making an effort to change is the hard part

    17:10 Hello, I'm a disabled special education(Deaf studies) student, and we talk about this concept A LOT, which is good bc it's a big problem. We use the term paternalism(not sure if there's other common terms). Basically, the desire to help as a member of the oppressive group, but not respecting the autonomy and capability of the oppressed group enough to recognize that they should be the one's deciding what is help (bc they, y'know, live through it). As one might guess, big problem with disability advocacy with the infantilization of disabled people and general pitying bc disability is seen as being so horrible etc etc. It (clearly) does apply to other marginalized groups as well. This man has an... embarrassing case of paternalism towards Black people.
    Not ideal, not allyship.
    Sarah Z said something recently that blew my mind. To paraphrase, people adopting new/updated progressive language so quickly bc of discourse, faster than they can update their way of thinking to be actually progressive and unpack all those fun biases we grow up with. Unfortunately good intentions are not enough, we have to know what the feck is going on as well.
    Bonus: complimenting someone by saying they're 'well spoken' is one of my personal pet peeves, bc it is ALWAYS said to a visibly disabled person and/or Black person. Like,,,, why wouldn't they be? And it would be fine if they weren't? And it's the way that they clearly see a visibly disabled person and feel weird about it and jump to that compliment. Like just accept the discomfort and try to become used to the idea of someone being disabled or looking different, you'll live I promise. wheW, sorry that one just pisses me off.

If you obstinately continue pushing others to take your word after they express doubt, you’re probably just going to make it worse and fail to accomplish anything positive. Between this fact and the ever present possibility that you’re wrong or missing something important in your analysis, your effort is probably better spent addressing the issues you care about in some other way.

      This is why we have CRT being banned, PragerU coming to some state schools and products from systematic racism still being practiced/perpetuated. At least that's a partial reason.

People not only undermine the amount of resources it takes to even have a child fill out a college app to be competitive, but also the readiness to assimilate in a university setting. I'd been thinking a lot about the white savior complex lately, and I don't think it's guilt. I think it's shame. Guilt implies that they've done something wrong, whereas shame is more focused around trauma. To me, unpacking being white in a society that values whiteness felt exactly like unpacking my childhood trauma. And it certainly feels like a powerless place, too. That could be why people like Alec try so hard to be in control. It could be his way of regaining control/power in a situation that seems otherwise hopeless to him.

    • @DirtyFretboard
      @DirtyFretboard 8 месяцев назад +15

      Idk man, what if Alec acts that way just cause he's white and he thinks his opinion matters because of the way culture normalizes the idea that his opinion matters? I feel like it's a bit inaccurate to say a person who is traditionally given a lot of control will over enthusiastically claim that control because they are ashamed to have it? Shame or guilt makes people more hesitant/shy or they try to get others to forgive them, neither of which he was doing.

      The idea that racism is traumatic to people of European descent
      It is.
      As far as I’m concerned, “white privilege” just means you’re being used
      Being conditioned to hate others or look down on others
      Being conditioned to blame yours or societal woes on people in your situation or worst situations, instead of blaming the people in power of those situations
      Blaming the Canary in the coal mine instead of the mine owner
      It’s the cognitive dissonance,
      if you really think about it, the idea of race makes no sense whatsoever.
      That you can actually know anything about another person based on the color of their skin doesn’t make any sense whatsoever
      The idea that people of the same Skin color somehow share the same culture is nonsense
      -Having a shared history does not directly correlate to a shared culture.
      The idea that the color of your skin is a valid social identity doesn’t make sense
      The idea that “us vs them” can be based on the color of your skin is actually weird.
      But it plays off of the human nature of us vs them
      Sadly humans will always think in terms of us vs them
      But we are conditioned as far as who is “us” and who is “them”
      And using color as that divide is maddening
      Being used and being lied to by “your own people” is traumatic

    • @DirtyFretboard
      @DirtyFretboard 8 месяцев назад +13

      @@p0rnany0ne I don't really agree with this take because I think it excuses any behavior white people do as just "dealing with trauma." And the question this take raises is where does it stop? If Alec is just a white guy who is upset because "his own people" failed him, then who failed those people. Is every white person just acting out in response from the trauma some vague "other" white person caused in them? Could you ever pin down the original racist white person that caused all the trauma, or would you just excuse the actions of everyone?
      In the end, I think the truth is that yes white people are taught to react/think in these ways, but if they are an adult they should be able to unpack that and deal with it, instead of making other people make space for their feelings of guilt or shame.
      I think you have to acknowledge that Alec is in control of his own actions and if hes being disrespectful and rude in a debate that is his fault. He is not a child, and he can take responsibility for himself.

    I haven't finished watching the original video or this one yet but I think its interesting to mention the first question referring to white people having more advantages than black people and specifically Aliya's take on it being that she personally hasn't experienced those disadvantages, but she does appear more racially ambiguous due to her lighter skin tone so she would most likely be favored based on her lighter skin and by how pretty she is as well. Besides that many people use this argument of not experiencing something first hand to deny or invalidate the severity of an issue. This was commonly seen with covid too, stating that it wasn't that bad because youre family wasn't personally affected. Also her voice gaining attention due to her race is partly due to likeminded black conservatives seeking people who agree with them and other conservatives from other races but also a big factor is based on white conservatives using black conservatives as a sort of token or proof that they are not "brainwashed" and hype them up sometimes without even caring about their opinions but rather to shove it down the mouths of other black liberals.

    There's so much nonsense out there, but I think you hit it on the head when you brought up trust. As a mixed person married to a black man, we have had several conversations talking about how white _leftist_ activists (as in, self-identified socialists) are untrustworthy, and a lot of it comes down to that assumption of knowing what's best when in reality you have no idea what the other person's life is like. That disconnect and lack of trust then causes any future misunderstandings and missteps, which are human and natural, to stand out so much more and become the reason for further distrust.
    None of us have all the answers. If you can accept that, then the logical thing to do next is to ask clarifying questions AND accept that the answers you get are sincere. If you don't believe the other person is sincere, then you have a bigger problem that must be solved first before you'll get anywhere.
    ---
    On a totally separate note, I take issue with calling the political spectrum a horseshoe. That is centrist propaganda. The real left-right spectrum is about who is more important and who should have power over others. Far leftists believe no one should ever have power over others, while far rightists believe there should always be one person/group with total power over everyone else.
    The _only_ overlap between the far left and the far right is an agreement that the status quo is not okay. This is why they're called extremists--they believe the current situation is so bad that drastic measures are _required._ But who decides what counts as extreme? The centrists.

I used to feel this in myself when I was younger, this need to show BIPOC I’m “one of the good white people”, but I’ve come to the conclusion (glad you agree) that white people should hold that guilt and sit with it. It’s one of the ways to keep us accountable for the structural racism and daily racism we see day to day. It’s also one of the ways to make sure we don’t get too high and mighty/white saviour-y. Also just like.. if marginalized communities have to deal with racism day to day, the least us white people can do is feel a bit of guilt about it. We need to show through continuous words and actions of standing up for minority groups we are trying to be allys to BIPOC, not prove one time we are different to get rid of the guilt.
    Also so true about community workers thinking they know best because they have done the reading and stuff. Something we are taught in urban planning school when working with communities, especially indigenous communities, is to ask them what they want and then help them with the knowledge and tools we have as professional urban planners to achieve what they want - as opposed to coming in and being like “you need this and I’m right bc I’m the expert”.

      @@439801RS As a N. American black & white person, I disagree with this statement. In the past, Europeans & North Americans of all classes looked down on even the black and darker skinned people. No matter how wealthy or poor, because it was systemic racist belief.
      Even now, at least in American society, there is classism that plays a role in advantages and benefits different races have, but they all still view black & brown people as less than, due to historical propaganda against them.
      Black and darker skinned people carry heavier burdens on a systemic and societal level more than white, and white-passing people will, just in a general sense.
      I understand the guilt because at least through an entire black persons life, they struggle for just living in their skin, although I have no connection to my history or ancestors, and am unsure if they were ever wealthy. It makes sense, at least to me, because we still face repercussions from our global history every day, and will continue to if more people don’t have compassion for the obstacles minority people face due to white people’s ancestors/skinfolks actions.

      @@439801RS I feel like that's why most European countries that have had a colonial history are showing several symptoms of colonial and racial amnesia because they lack the gumption to address the things that happened in the past and are still affecting human beings, especially people of colour in real time. I believe it is warranted to assign this specific type of culpability to white people, especially when you directly benefit from a system of oppression like white supremacy and have been granted white privilege because of it and the important question is what are you doing about it to dismantle it? Like I can understand that it's not your fault that you've been granted white privilege but once you're old enough to realize these inequalities, it is thus your responsibility to dismantle white supremacy. Like it's not something of the past like you're still directly involved. Like I feel it's the same as asking "aryan Germans" to not feel guilty for what happened to the Jewish people but that guilt and shame was instrumental in helping create an educational system in Germany that educates the youth about the events of WW2 that led to 6 million Jewish people being killed. So I don't believe that it's a North American mindset at all because Germany is a western European country that was driven by guilt and shame and channelled that into action for the better. If Germany didn't feel the slightest remorse, shame or guilt, I don't think that would sit right with the world, I'm sure a lot of countries would've called it out. Like in my books, Germany is forgiven because of that, like they earned this forgiveness with all the efforts they put in. The question that arises is if you should forever feel ashamed, guilty, or remorseful? The answer is as long as white supremacy and white privilege exist then I feel like you should sit with the guilt but once it's gone you're free to no longer be plagued by the guilt and that's not the case so .....

    Re: military spending. I would be interested to know what the likely implications would be of cutting that budget by like 5%. Cuz just that would be a lot of damn money. I do not know what is actually required to “keep our country safe”. I do know that the military industrial complex is at least in part a vehicle for shady people to grift and control our government decision makers. That is unambiguously a huge problem that we can’t just turn a blind eye to.

      I’ve been wondering about this as well. I believe last year (?) the Department of Defense had around 61% of 3.5 trillion going unaccounted for in its audit. I wonder what happens to the money? I think more people against the exuberant budget for the military should first protest for investigations into where the money goes rather than straight up say it’s not protecting civilians. Until then we truly have no more information about it then what the government decides to tell us. Sort of scary.

      Not to mention that the military industrial complex's present-day actions in the rest of the world are largely an extension of the same history of imperialism and colonialism that makes reparations (to marginalized communities in the global North as well as destabilized and intentionally underdeveloped countries) more than justified.

    It's not easily quotable, but a very quick read: I highly recommend Ida B. Wells' article "Freedom of Political Action." Remembering that, at the time, Republicans were progressives and Democrats were conservatives. She writes a pretty blistering response to the suggestion that Black folks "owe" their vote to anyone.

    Honestly I mean this in the most sincere way while I’m sure we don’t agree on alot of things I really respect how open minded you seem to be to realize things are true even if they don’t necessarily support a view you have on something and how you try to see other sides of the argument and more importantly you make a lot of good criticisms of both sides. That’s super rare today on both sides of just about every argument.

    Khadija, Love your content! Also to your point about when white people speak out of turn, I wanted to bring up something I saw last week. A white tiktoker asked a black creator about the Montgomery riverfront brawl. She asked as a white person if and when something like that should go down again how can white people help and let people of color know hey we're here to fight with you, how can we let you know we're on your side. I don't remember the creators specific response to that, but she talked about that people of color don't know that they can trust white people, or which white people are trust worthy. And that white people will have to educate themselves, earn trust through action and not just words, but also be aware that no matter what some people will just not trust you intentions no matter what, knowing why that mistrust is there, we (white people) are just going to have to accept that as a reality.
    My view point watching this tik tok is i'm glad the woman asked the question and that the creator answered with ways to help but also a reality check in there. There are those of us educating ourselves to be better allies. But we're not going to always get it right, nor do I think it's possible to get it right 100% of the time because everyone has different perspectives nd view points on how to solve problems. But myself, and I'm sure other white people, are aware that it can be tricky knowing that aside from educating ourselves when it's better and appropriate to ask opinions of people of color their view point on ways to be helpful without sounding like we expect you to know the answers or show us how to solve the problem. I recognize the complicated line that exists there.

      They, like many of their liberal counterparts, value their adjacency to white power more than they value their safety.
      People have the right to believe what they want to, but Black conservatives, at least in an American context, seem to think that by aligning with white conservatives, they can gain benefit or access to the resources white conservatives have.
      It’s about hierarchy and power, they know that they can’t be the king, but maybe they can be the head knight or court jester.
