2024 F1 JAPANESE GP Friday analysis by Peter Windsor

  • Another Williams shunt (fortunately without injury to Logan Sargeant) and afternoon rain limited the running on Japanese GP Friday. Still - amidst the cherry blossoms and the beat of the rhythm of Suzuka - arose some intriguing results. In this video, Peter Windsor looks at the low- and heavy-fuel runs of the leading runners and their comparative top speeds. Red Bull's Max Verstappen was quickest on his performance lap with the Pirelli soft tyre but Ferrari - with Mercedes, Aston and McLaren not too far behind - again look strong.

Real F1 fans know there's no 'goat' in F1. Rules, points, scoring, qualifying formats, machinery, circuits have all changed so much from each era to the next, that its absolutely impossible to say one driver is better than another from a different era. Greatest of their era is about the best you can do.

Nobody ever in the history of this sport, not even your brave big balls spitfire pilot Clark, has been inch perfect every corner, lap, session, quali, race and season as Max the best this sport has ever seen Verstappen, who hasn’t had a day off since karting in Italy.
You can be in denial and with your: there are more Max’n with Charles, Lando and Lewis but the reality is they didn’t win COMBINED what Max won at the age of 26, not even close. You need to come up with better excuses, Max even destroys the hyper hyper competitive equal machinery NO EXCUSE, not even for Brits, sim racing world.

What most people these days try to do is claim modern F1 is more complex - meaning more effort for the driver - and higher G force, meaning the drivers are fitter. Great, but that doesn't account for how drivers like Clark had to drive without any radio/telemetry/sensors or adjustments on the wheel. Clark's mechanics said he used to put less wear on the gearbox and brakes, unlike the modern era when everything is electronic. And on top of that, in order to get the top lap times you have to push like hell. Most current drivers would be too scared.
